Florida Folk's?
Just curious about all the issues with the manatee and turtles down there because of the weather is it as bad as the news is portraying it? Thanks. Bruce

Re: Florida Folk's?
In my 56 years of being born and raised here..
This is the worst we have ever seen. The whole state is loosing its Snook population. Even Catfish, Menhaden, Croakers & Mullet are floating. The Manatee's are on top of them selves in the warm outlet springs and power plant discharge areas.. Time will tell. This has been 10 days of nightly freezing and highs barely getting above 50. :( Turtles by the 1000's all over the state are being stunned. Only upside to this freeze is the Iguana's are dropping like flies out of the trees. See ya, Ken |
Re: Florida Folk's?
I have also never seen this duration of cold temps. All kinds of fish were floating yesterday in my canal. I counted 34 snook and 2 tarpon just sitting there at my dock today, hardly moving.

Re: Florida Folk's?
Our water temp is 48 in Ft. Myers. I've heard early estimates of 95% of our snook are dead. Ag crops are a loss.

Re: Florida Folk's?
Wow..... More like axis warming global cooling...hope it works out for all down south it affects all of us

Re: Florida Folk's?
My wife's cousin told me of alot of speckled trout floating around in the upper Albemarle Sound.

Re: Florida Folk's?
This will be as bad as the big snook kill in the late 70's. As for manatees, maybe this will naturally drive them back to the south to the Caribbean and Central America where they came from. I think I read somewhere that they migrated to Florida comparatively recently - meaning over the last several hundred years. Could be wrong - my memory is shot - but that's what I think I read.

Re: Florida Folk's?
On another note, the guy running the marina here said he saw a cooler full of 12" speckled perch, (Crappe),this morning. Guess I'll have to break the ole MonArk out.

Re: Florida Folk's?
Lot's of snook in broward county & several reports of yellowtail, mutton & bonefish coming from the keys. Not good at all!

Re: Florida Folk's?
I have lived in the same house since 1978. This was the first time I have ever seen my canal with a sheet of ice on it.

Re: Florida Folk's?
At first I thought it was just old age and the knowledge that cold weather is such a major "PIA", however the real truth is I hate F-ing cold weather!!!!! To me it seems like this is just the longest cold snap I've been around in at least 15 years. Us Florida boys know the drill....two days of NW wind and cold, the front passes and then a week of warm up so we can do some fishing. Not so in the last two weeks.
I'm going to the bank tomorrow and borrow some money to pay my electric bill!!! Thinking of using "No Bones" as a credit reference!!!! Wish me luck!!! |

Re: Florida Folk's?
A couple of days ago, there was SNOW! in Naples. Its gone below freezing here for at least 4 days. UGH!
In 1977, I sat on a dock in Miami, watching the snow flakes come down. Just as bad as now, but it did not last near as long. |
Re: Florida Folk's?
Maybe you guys can apply for some Federal Assistance for your electric bills.
What the heck, the Government seems to give it to anyone that wants it. They'll just print more........... |

record. We spent the day in the Lil' No Bones (flats boat) scooping up so may Snook out of the Tomoka River and Thompsons Creek that it took 3 of us 4 hours to clean them all. Matt you remember that for sure when you were smokey the bear on water skis. Even the FMP looked the other way back then cause they knew they were going to die. ;) See ya, Ken |
Re: Florida Folk's?
I walked down to the barge canal off the Withlacoochee river, and counted 4 dead tarpon on Tuesday, and 5 dead snook within 10 minutes. The snook were all under 3 lbs/18", but one of the tarpon was in the 100-150 lb range, close to 6' long. I took a photo with my cell phone, but it didn't come out. A boater picked him out of the water and said he was going to have him mounted.
We have had 12 straight days below freezing, and 13 of 14 days this year. We've had 5 days reaching below 20*, and two days reaching 12* or 13*. It snowed here on Saturday past, and stuck to the ground. We have not been above 50* at my house for 9 straight days, and only 1 day reached above 50* this year. Today, we are finally supposed to reach 54*-56*. The Citrus County Chronicle (aka the Citrus County Comical) published an editorial that blamed the cold weather on Global Warming...no kidding. :D |
Re: Florida Folk's?
We had baked snook last night for supper, again.

Re: Florida Folk's?
If you read carefully what the global warming models are predicting, its for overall average warming AND greater variability which means worse droughts, worse floods and colder blasts in winter as well as hotter temps in summer. They could be wrong, but what we are seeing is what has been predicted.

Re: Florida Folk's?
"Professor Mojib Latif, one of the world's leading climate modelers thinks the cold snap Americans have been suffering through is only the beginning. He says we're in for 30 years of cooler temperatures -- a mini ice age, he calls it, basing his theory on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the world's oceans."
