New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Hate to bump Finster's memories but hopefully this will bring him some other blue memories.
The 20' Seafari has a new big sister. She was delivered at 2:18 pm 02/06/10. Clearly Mommy was not pleased and Daddy is frantically attempting to convince her that he has a sickness... so it's not his fault...Here's a couple pics of the new baby: http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/i...eavette201.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/i...eavette203.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/i...arboardbow.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/i...eavette204.jpg |

Gillie,
Nice score! Tell mommy that it is at least a legal addiction. Good luck with her. |

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
The Seavette was on my short list before the 21' popped up.
When I was looking there was none for sale at a reasonable price. Now it looks like they are coming out of the wood work. Great find and a nice price. |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Thanks Denny, Catalina will be on the agenda... Lots of work ahead.
Capt Chuck, If you have any low budget Gucci ideas I'm all ears... Yeah Strick, the last e-mails I swapped with the guy was in July, I was getting sick of seeing it - it seemed to de-valuate this addiction...when you mentioned you were heading south I thought it was for this rather than a 2nd Seafari... Lew just cause its legal doesn't make it ok Terry, this boat was never even on my list, but I haven't found a Moesly 15 or 21 so when I saw this 100 miles away I said "Damn the torpedoes" and told the guy I'd buy it if he'd deliver it... I can't pull it with my T100 and sure as hell can't stop it. Sandy, power is twin 1983 2.4L Merc 200s with large ports (what are large ports and their benefit)and WH15 carbs 21 p Lazer II props. I think the carbs are for V225hp but I don't know much. Seller claimed 68 mph...faster than I care to go... |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
McGilli2cuddys...Nice job
We've never officially named our Seafari however have always affectionately called her BIG BLUE or THE SEACRAFT. I've always liked the name CLASSIC IN SESSION but afterwards saw that it was close to your THERAPY IN SESSION. I shall pass on the name to you and think it would be a great name for Mommys new toy :D It's yours if you want it. I'm not going to use it. One side of me thinks it would bring bad luck to name her now, after all these years and I seem to be having very good luck with her so...I'm going with no name for now. Enviously :D Brandon |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
I cant tell you how many times I thought about driving cross country to buy that seavette. Awesome deal and when shes done you will have one of the baddest boats in california congrats!!
|
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
That's beautiful.
JFTR, with twin 3.4L 300hp big-block Mercury outboards and a clean bottom, a Seavette can hit a true (on radar) 73 mph. That was a fun boat to rig! :D |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
I must have looked at thing a dozen times on craigs list but it was just too far away for me to even consider it, I had to run 1100 miles for my 23cc but had to draw the line on 7/8ths of the way across the country. I'd love to have the outboards on her. Lots of luck with it!

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Congratulations, we need to have a classic Seavette gathering!

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
2 cuddys. Good one.
Gilldeuxcuddys, An engine is just a big air pump. The more air it can flow, the more potential power it can make. More fuel too. Wing Ding motors have ports not valves, cam, rockers, springs, guide plates etc. thought you were looking for MPG? You may hit close to 30 gph on the pins. :shocke Congrats, GFS  |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Gillie - that boat was a steal. I am glad you got it!! Strick sent me pics of those engines a while back and they are either 82 200's or 81 225's. 83 had fingerports and has a totally different head design. These motors are strong and a lot of fun on a 20 seacraft.
http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...y_2009_004.jpg I'm planning on using just one of the engines on my 23 with a 2:1 ratio lower. Let me know if you need a starter or 2. |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Hey I am going to be out in San Diego next week. Maybe we can hook up for a short bit and I can take a look at that bad boy :D

Awesome Gil

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Hey Steve, not sure this thing belongs in the same hemisphere as yours - yours is surely the sweetest of all the Seavettes ...maybe after Strick's done with it, heh, heh...
I wonder if you have any pics of yours through the restoration process? This one is in pretty rough shape and I'm probably in over my head but I'd love to see whats under the caps, etc., this thing has copper tubing for the Hynautic steering which I can already tell is gonna be a bear to revamp. Floor is petty shot, a couple of hatches are missing, the control cables are shot the, haven't looked at the gas tank yet but it looks foamed in on the sides - hopefully not on the bottom... Big, thanks for the insight on the motors. I had assumed they were '83s based on the Merc placard "6392684." Seller said the were '84s. Terry check your PM Tuesday for my contact info. You're certainly welcome to take a peek when you're out here. Love to hear your thoughts the restoration and hear more about your 21. Just a quick note, the windshield and cuddy cap seems to be independent of the gunwale cap. They seem to be screwed together with a lap-joint much like the gunwale cap to the hull. Any thoughts or knowledge confirming this observation? At first glance it seems like this could easily be a convertible 'Vette. :D |

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Hey Scott, Happy birthday, hope you made it a good one...
I'm not familiar with the Seabird cuddy attachment but it may be similar... I haven't done battle with the cuddy cap yet but it appears to be an insert that is fit within and mechanically attached to the cockpit insert. Hopefully the 2 liners are not puttied together. In Lost2a6's post he mentioned that the teak which serves as a seam hider was attached with 5200 or similar adhesive and a bear to remove. I'd like to remove the cuddy just to assess everything but I don't want to tear up the joint needlessly... Shame this boat has been neglected but I guess that's the only reason I could afford to buy it. Question is can I afford to make her a runner again? |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
The early Seavette's had a two piece top deck, Potter took the cap from the CC and just tabed in the top cabin, and used the teak to hide the seam. The later 78's had a one piece molded top cap. My 78 Vette has a one piece molded top cap. If anyone was wondering the floor liner is from the 23 Sceptre. I'm planning on cutting the cabin top loose and moving it ahead 14" to gain more cockpit space... pics to follow of the work when the snow goes away

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Hi Don, Thanks for confirming my findings. As I explored the construction, that came to mind - Sceptre cockpit insert and CC gunwale cap sans the inset rail setback (at least I didn't notice it). My cuddy cap appears to be a one piece insert and removable with a screwgun and a thin blade to cut the adhesive (and a lot of patience, I'm sure). Will you move your windshield forward (seems tricky at best)or just the lounge bulkhead? I removed my barrel bolster seats and will probably get rid of them. They eat up cockpit space...Like to hear more about your "adjustment" plans.
-Gillie |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
I'm going to move the whole thing, I'm going to cut it loose the same way your's is put together. Remember I'm just cutting the "cabin" part at the location where the teak was. I'll side the whole top forward including the windsheild and cabin top 14" and then glass it back together. When its done the wire ways that are in the cabin on the port and star sides will be flush with the bulkhead.

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Don,
When did you get a Seavette, or did you just confiscate Finster's for lack of progress? |

Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
When you slide the cabin forward will you actually be cutting it at the top edge of cabin so it so the roof lays over the sides of the cabin as it moves forward? And then trim overlay flush to the cabin sides and re-glass? Or are you lifting the whole structure up and then forward?

Scott.. No Finny still has his, I think his Mom is going to plant flowers in it this Spring. I've had mine for about 7 months, it is a 78 I/O version. It was on this site in the For Sale page, as it was on e-bay ( http://www.classicseacraft.com/forum...b=5&o=&fpart=1 ). I put one of the guys from Silverhawk onto it as a parts rig. To maybe plug the top cap and bring the Vette back to life as a Silverhawk with twin 502's. Well they never did anything with it so I worked a "deal" with them and its now mine. I've done the transom and added the SilverHawk full bracket for twin 175's or 200's. Next is the cabin move and then the floor redo. I'm working the barter system for all of the work I can't do, I have a painter that needs a top for his boat. I'll get some pics up soon. Ken... go play with your Seamaster   :o |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Don-
That boat sounds very cool. We need some pictures. Get that snow off her.............and make her respectable! :D |
Re: New to me 78 Seavettte 23
Don, How do you adapt the windshield width to the cap? As you move it forward it seems the beam between the gunwale caps gets narrower and the width of windshield mount would exceed the original inset where you'll be cutting. Do you just close the angles on the windshield a little? Or will that require some other mod I'm not seeing.
I really like the idea of shortening the lounge in favor of more aft cabin. Forward hatch on mine has been replaced with a Bomar style sailboat hatch and really legitimately needs revision so I've been toying with adaptations but undecided as of yet. Seafari 23 variant is kind of what I'm thinking ;) |
