Tips for throttle control cable replacement?

Lost the cable on the muffs in the driveway after a little fish yesterday. 1 Bonita. Real tight tight and choppy and was draggin Todds Lures, which we all need to buy more of for the cause.

`96 Rude 150 factory box.

Beginning the research now. Search comes up w/ 17 ft for older 20 sf, but will pull part # and call Slacker.

Whats a good lube for pullin? WD? Worked well for the ducer cable.
My thinking on adjustment is to leave as much room for stretching as possible.

Thoughts please.

Ziggy is commin down 4-12/4-17 and I must be ready!

Thanks gang,
GFS

Your cable will have the length embossed about 2 ft from the motor end - I just used Dawn and some spit to pull my ducer cable, I had been dreading do it - slid right up.

Hey Sandy I'm getting all DIY - checkout my new post on combing bolsters and seats for DIY'ers - found a great vinyl site. I'm thinking of bolsters doing the pleated with the welping stuff so it looks sewn, 1" foam under - it sure looks easy and I have plywood left over.

By the way as soon as I can get Susan to do some pic's you need to do the sleeping platform - Bahamas or the keys would be an easy inexpensive weekend run for you that way without a lodging cost, bait and tackle not included in the inexpensive part LOL

It would be easier to do a video so I could show how easy it stores and goes up, I can do pics but no idea on video - anybody???

my first thought was dish soap but its supposed to cut grease right? dont throttle and shift cables have some grease to keep moving freely? thats why i decided on the wire pulling lube.

Hey ESD,
Regarding video you can load it on photobucket.com like below or youtube or whatever...

Sandy, I just pulled my cables and found them marked on the shifter end. Mine are for merc but it is logical to mark them on the more protected end...

I just think it would be better to show it that way then list the materials - thanks

I guess the steering is on the motor end LOL

Dixon ,
Good to see you getting all DIY.

Good tip. :D

Couldn`t find #s anywhere....George said 18 ft.
Slacker was less than useless. They even said they didn`t build my boat. Bass pro in Miami confirmed 18ft sooo HiHo
HiHo.

Got the Xtremes for 95 clams with ends from Rob @ Noel`s Dist. He always beats BOW and online and he`s around the corner.

Sweet Melissa,
The new cables pulled in easily with no lube. Far easier than the ducer cable. Cut the old ends off to facilitate the pull. Final adjustment tomorrow followed by an Easter fish.

Both cables had no #`s anywhere. Both also had small cracks in the casing by the crimped end at the motahhh.

Oh, I heard Theo is trying to get J. Geils to play at the Little Lyric Bandbox this Summah. If Duke And The Drivers are the opening act, I may have to have a phantom illness.

Tip `O Day. Thinking of runnin a bead of liquid electrical tape around the end of the crimp to help prevent intrusion.

Sandy, Glad you got your cables in. I'm not in a big hurry now 'cuz I'm going to redo the transom and that's gonna take a while ... regarding your rubber goop idea I wonder if isn't there a grommet there that resides in the cowling for that purpose?

Re: Tips for throttle control cable replacement?

Yes Gillie there is. It and the grommet cover o ring are both shot. Hope to get out tomorrow. Those can wait a week.

Cheers,
GFS

You have a full plate indeed.

The end of the cable crimps are exposed beyond the grommet outside the lower cowl.

Had Honey Dews for breakfast....but splashed in the ski lake this afternoon. Very smooth. The old cables were 1/4" and the Xtremes are 3/8". I followed the manual for set up as Janet spun the prop. She now knows what a prop is and even what it does. Still working on the battery switch and starting procedure.
Cheers,
GFS
