Starboard rear hatches on a 20
 

Anyone have starboard as rear hatches on a 20. Likes dislikes, pics? I'm trying to decide whether to make some hatches out of plywood and resin or just some starboard for now? Thanks

Used teak on my old 23 Sceptre. My 23 has fibreglass but need to be recored. On the teaks ones, I used Starboard as a backing as also used as a cutting board.

Stop by and look at my teak hatches ,just finished with 9 coats of varnish, When I bought my boat 24 years ago it had teak plywood hatches that were worn, I made all new ones out of solid 3/4 teak, I used oil for many years, but varnished them about 10 years ago, with recoating 3 coats every year, this year took down to wood and revarnished, I guess the starboard would be the ez way and give a more newer look if thats what you are aiming for.

Yeah I know it warps, it would only be for this season. It's also slippery if it needs to be stepped on.

Btw thanks Joe, I kinda wanted mine white.

I guess I'm just gonna glass over some plywood and finish it out. Now that I think about it the slippery thing bothers me.

Is it really a warp or just expanding and contracting?

I have been working with it over the past year as a counter top on a desk that is outside at a marina and the stuff sure will expand and contract over the seasons but in the year I have had zero issues with warping... on the counter top. That stuff ain't cheap either.

it's very flexible for it's density and it needs to be backed by something or use a fairly thick piece for short spans. I have a couple peices on my cutting boards on my dock and I flip them a few times a year to keep them flat, still better than acrylic though

I used 3/4 inch MDO and coated it with epoxy and finished with one part poly. They are heavy but I liked the results.

Starboard should have a sticker that says "do not use for fiberglass hatch replacement." Slippery when wet, sags, scratches and then stains easily. Good for fabricating low stress accessories. Not something you want anyone standing on...

Its fine if its backed by something and has enough support and is screw down. how big do you need them to be? I might have 2 scrap peices of marine ply I can cut to size for you. coat with epoxy twice, sand and paint. they will last 10 years. let me know what size and I can measure what I have left over from the latest project(full composite floor in 21 mako).

I replaced the three rear hatches on my 20 with 3/4" Starboard in 2003 . It matched the thickness of the warped wood that was there previously. There's been zero warping.

Wood, otoh, you can count on warping if it's perpetually damp on the inside, like a bilge, bait well or cooler.

I started other hatches already, if i had done the starboard i was going to do it out of 3/4" and just route from outside in a 1/4" deep to recess to hatch but leave the center 3/4" to give it some meat.
