Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
Anyone else in the Gulf Coast area concerned about the possible effects from the oil spill on boating & fishing? Was planning on going out this weekend but that may not happen now... :(
Not sure if the news media is blowing it all out of proportion or not. I haven't heard anything from the local news about how it will effect us if/when it does make it to the Mobile Bay area; will boating and fishing be prohibited? :D |
Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
If it stays on the beaches and out of the marsh I don't see any significant issues. Fish here are so full of mercury anyway, what is another health advisory going to do. They still don't recommend eating fish more than twice a month.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
Everyone on the entire gulf coast should be worried. If they don't get that flow stopped with the blow out valve, that things going to continue leaking over 200,000 gallons per day until a relief well is drilled . Media isn't blowing it out of proportion.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
Just bought my Seacraft end of last year was really looking forward to fishing this summer, looks like those plans are going down the tube pretty quick....
I guess I will just leave the boat in the yard... maybe it would be a good year sand and paint the haul. |

Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
If this oil from a producing well gets into the interior marshes of Louisiana and Mississippi there will be hell to pay for all fishermen, crabbers, oystermen and the enviroment. Why couldn't this happen during the winter and I would hate to be the person who designed and sold the BOP.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
Does this spill change anyones thought on having oil rigs off our coast? ive always been against , but I can see both sides of the argument.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
Thanks for the links / maps. Holding my breath and praying that it's not going to be as bad as they think... I feel bad whining about not being able to go fishing for fun, when that's the way a lot of folks around here make their living.
I am still okay with offshore drilling, but better safe guards need to be in place. Accidents happen... we still have plane crashes and we still pack the airports everyday. Just sucks that this happened and the damaged it is causing. |

Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
NOAA announced Sunday that they were prohibiting commercial AND recreational fishing from the mouth of the Mississippi to Pensacola Bay. That would include Alabama. Don't know how they plan to enforce it. Heck there's not enough enforcement out there on a normal day. Supposed to be closed ten days minimum.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill - Effect on Fishing?
I stopped and talked to a couple of guys today that were heading out... they said they were going to keep fishing until they see oil at the boat dock or the police would have to force them to stop.
