23 CC minty green!

After the building and then untimely sinking of my mako I went and started looking for another boat. I watched this one start at $4500 and eventualy over a few weeks drop to a more reasonable # ;)

I have a ton of plans and even more questions! First ill startout with some boat porn...

Re: 23 CC minty green!

The previous owner started the tear out about 2 years ago then lost interest. My plan is to dig out all the foam in the stringers, replace it and glass the tops back on. Then using composite board replace the transom. I have not decided on composite or wood floor yet. (I have allot of glass work before that)

My T top, leaning post and console will be used off my mako along with the 225 Oceanpro for now. I am not sure if this is enough HP for one of these hulls?? The Mako is a completely different hull design, and I saw 45 with 3 guys and 80gal of fuel on board, but it was a FLAT calm day.

I am also kicking around closing the transom in and a single bracket setup. I figure later on I could put a newer 250 or 300 on there, instead of twins.

Re: 23 CC minty green!

That boat has some history here on CSC one of the member's here and on Classicmako.com "Trydent" was the broker for the original owner, likely a few owners ago, 4 or so years ago? Your evinrude 225 will be fine for this hull with or without a bracket.

There is no need to rip open the stringers to replace the foam. The foam is not structural and is only there to form the glass stringers. As long as the stringers are solid and attached firmly to the hull and transom you are fine.

Were on the cape are you? I grew up in Truro on fisher's beach and I still launch out of the Pamet in the late fall.

Talk about some history! I saw a 23' SeaCraft @ Wildfire a couple of years ago. The deck had been ripped open from Customs/DEA. The story was the user had cut a hole in the deck straight thru into the stringers approx the same area exposed in the above photo. Both Port & Stbd stringers were utilized. They then manged to take out the foam as far forward as they could. The cavity was used to smuggle cocaine. (approx 10" dia pie plate was used to conceal the holes)

When you get a chance, would you stand that console up and snap a picture? Looks interesting.

Re: 23 CC minty green!

The guy I bought it from had it for about 4 years. He bought it stripped with no motor and no T top. The floor was soft where the T top was bolted and the transom was soft too. That is what started the whole tear out. He started to dig the foam out of the stringers to see if it was wet, well even if it wasnt back then, it is now. From what I can see they are attached well, ill know more after I clean it up some.

The console is something like I have never seen before. Its gota have 200lb of wood on it. I think I am going to sell it if anybody is interested.

I am also working on more pictures

Trayder swing by some time, I live behind the drive in on the Eastham Welfleet town line right on the main road, cant miss the boats in the yard.

Yep I know how that was.

I am looking for the hatch that covers the large fish box just below the casting platform. I have heard rumors of somebody re-poping them in MA somewhere?
Anybody got a name?

Wildman,

Its pretty easy to lay up one of your own on a table. I did the ice box lid hatches in back and I have limited skill :D. Strick pops these things out while he sleeps....just check out his procedure.

Wildman - I think I can hook you up with that hatch. I have one in my scrap pile that I was saving for a 122 gallon tank . . . that might never happen.

Been ordering parts and figuring out my deck's lay-out the last couple weeks.

I had a few minutes in the evenings last week so I thought I would give the hull a good buffing. The old gellcoat shined up nicely!

Most of the white junk is coming off easy. The tape lines from old Shrink wrap jobs are proving difficult, but its not too bad. One side is totally done and I started the other side.

Can I remove this bulkhead and replace it with a one piece unit without pulling the cap off the boat?

Wildman 09-05-2010 09:00 PM

Re: 23 CC minty green!

Got most of the junk and water out of the hull, and tore up the (rotted) 1/4in thick gas tank shelf. This will be replaced with strips of Penskie board laminated with glass.

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P9051443.jpg

I also tore out the front bulkhead as it was not glassed over and the bottom had started to rot. This will also be replaced with Penskie. I left 2in 'cleats' on the sides to glue the new board to.

The keel stringer is wet and the top 1/2in is rotted. They NAILED a filler strip between the gas tank shelf and the keel, water got in and does what water does! I will be replacing it with a piece of PVC pipe cut in half and laminated over.

The shelves on eiher side of the keel in the furthest aft part of the boat (the orignal bait well used to sit here) will be rebuilt and I am planning on mounting my wash down and live well pumps on them. I also removed the old thruhulls and strainers from here today.

NO, You will need to:

1.) Construct a new bulkhead using the old one as a pattern
2.) Cut out new hatch and any other holes
3.) Cut new bulkhead top to bottom @ centerline
4.) Install new in two pieces one side at a time
5.) Quick fair the two seams
6.) Sand, Paint & Caulk

I used 3/4" PVC Board

Re: 23 CC minty green!

I am assuming the old one just attaches to the lip with screws from the back and "Chaulk" ;)
I would like toget it out of there without completely destroying it, for template purposes.

Capt Chuck 09-05-2010 10:32 PM

Re: 23 CC minty green!

Thanks

BTW:
You need "toget" it out between the channels under the cap ;)

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

I was able to get it done without removing the cap. I used 1/4 inch starboard which is a little more flexible then the 3/4 inch PVC that Capt Chuck used.

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

I live down the road from you in wellfleet, and have driven past with a bracket'ed 77 23 in tow a few times. I have my bulkhead out in 2 pieces, and will be using it as a template, so if you cant get yours out in good shape you have backup. i will be doing the 3/4" pvc approach. winter project :). my bulkhead was not bonded to the cap and provided no structural beni that i could see, had 2 screws holding it in place on inside corners, some calking, and I saw-zalled it out in 2 pieces. add a couple foot stomp beat downs and it popped pretty clean-nuff to use as a template. would have never replaced it but went to re-wire the bow light and my weight crumbled the bulkhead bottom under door area, only thing holding it together on bottom edge was awlgrip.

i can look up where i sourced the 3/4" pvc if you want...it was a pain in the butt, first company shipped me 3/4" starboard and i was pissed and had to eat frieght on their mistake.

HA! yea its hard to miss my yard full of boats! There are so many boats that go by here its hard to keep them all straight.

Ill email you my number, swing by sometime if you see me out working on stuff.

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

I got the keel stringer out last night, totally wet and they had drilled some 1/2in holes through it. It was cracked where these holes were.

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P9121462.jpg

The Transducers were a joke. I chopped the glass out around them and then pounded them out with a hammer. Nothing but some 5200 holding them in. The glass didnt even wrap around the open end of the stringer, I am pretty sure this is how it got so wet.

Not much pic worthy stuff to post, but I did get all 6 Carbs on my motor straightened out, and fogged it for the winter. NOw I can take it off the old boat and put it on the pallet (inside storage) for the winter.
Also confirmed that the stator isnt messed up and its charging at 13.5vt.
My Penske board will be here on Thurs along with a bunch of resin and 6in 1704 Tape. Gota get to grinding!

I did get my tanks coated and ready to drop in.

Re: 23 CC minty green!

Started the evening off scribing and cutting my template out of 1/4in Luan. First I drilled some 1/2in holes for the alignment bolts. These holes will be transferred to the pieces of Penske board too, and I will reuse them for mounting of different things (D rings, drain plug, etc)on the transom, so I wont have to fill them.

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P9211465.jpg

Scribed the outside pattern, for rough size, then measured the inside of the boat to get the exact measurements

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P9211466.jpg

Lined up 99% the first time!

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P9211467.jpg

Then cut and drilled the support/clamp 2X4's

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

I have been dreading this project for weeks.
Big the bullet and ground ALL the excess glass out of the boat. I have left the little shelves besides the stringers as I think they are semi structural. THis hull flexes less than some, but I would still like to keep it as square as possible while I work.
Ill cut them out after I get some of the structure back in the boat. They are plywood and all wet.

Very nice......the smell of epoxy resin is in the air!!! I started my transom, console, electronics, etc., etc. rebuild about this time last year, heck I'm still finding sanding dust in the garage. Good luck!!!

Wildman 09-23-2010 10:02 AM

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

I got smart about this one, I could have run the grinder for 3hrs in the cool shade inside the garage. But NO,I opted to do it just outside, and paid for it in sweating. Less mess to cleanup and the breeze was blowing.
I am planning on backing it right up just inside the door to keeep the resin out of the direct sunlight for some more working time.

Got my Penskee board in yesterday. Cut everything to fit.
Hope to catch up with the guy I get my Matt from, and I can get that cut out tonight too.

The inside skin I left this solid.

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/P9231471.jpg

The outter skin, I drilled about 100 holes in it to allow for air pockets to excape and excess resin to pass through.

how do you like working with the penske board?? i went to look at coosa today but they didnt have it in stock but showed me penske instead and had it in stock

Wildman 09-30-2010 08:44 AM

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

The Penske board is great to work with. Cuts just like wood. I did a test patch with some resin and it wets out great. I have been told to wet out the board seprate, adding slightly less hardner so it will stay tacky longer. Then wet out the glass layer to the existing transom with a standard mix up. It will all kick off together.

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

what are you going to use to dig out the rest of the foam in the stringers??

Bigshrimpin 09-30-2010 07:58 PM

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

all that foam is good . . . no reason to remove good foam.

Wildman 10-01-2010 12:23 AM

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

Exactly, its dry so I am keeping it. I am just going to fill in the missing stuff after cleaning the little chunks and leaves out of the boxes (again) and then lay glass over the top of the boxes to seal them up.

'shrimpin I am still interested in that hatch if you still have it.

Blue197320 10-01-2010 06:44 PM

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

oh i read earlier in your thread you said it was wet. ok then what would you use to dig it out> i need to clean mine out, the foam is dry till about an inch from the bottom.

Wildman 10-03-2010 07:23 PM

Re: 23 CC minty green! Pipe Dream?

Believe it or not, a shovel (or a couple of various sized shovels) works best. Also a pruning saw from Agway works good for cutting it and the shovel will POP it right out in chunks.
I had thought the foam was wet but the guy cut some slots way low on the outside of the boxes when he did the tear out, so the water drains right out instead of sitting in there.
