Who wants boat porn?????
ive finally got the ball rolling on my 87 23' CC. got the motor off this weekend and took the console out. this week i took up the fuel tank hatch to reveal a 2002 fuel tank 99 gallons. it has a few cancer spots on it. the way it was installed was with wood wedged between it and the stringers. the was just a little foam so it came out pretty esay. when it came out i found some stringer problems. i think that it can be fixed. let me know about options for the stringers. i removed the aluminum trim around the transom and found a big crack at each corner. i used a 3/4" pole bit to drill some tests. the wood seems to be damp but not soaking wet. going to dusky boats this weekend to look at a bracket. i will finsih removing all the little stuff before any cutting begins. look at the pics below. Re: Who wants boat porn?????
I guess you finally found the time to start
Whats nice is the the weather will start changing and you won't be working in the 90+ degree heat. Good luck on the project and keep the pisc coming! I also plan to "re start" mine soon maybe I can have some good progress by Christmas and Santa can drop of a nice engine :D |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
Looks like most '87 era boats.
For some reason, there were a lot of hull/stringer disconnects in these years. Clean it up good, and use epoxy to stich the stringers back to the hull. Check the gas tank platform, mine was wet and weighed over 150 pounds. |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
that platform is coming out tonight probably. i have no idea why some one would have cut the stringer like that. im thinking of using the 1708 i have to fix that stringer. or do i need something heavier??
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
That`s brutal. I had a slight delam on my port stringer. Top layer only 3"x15". Might wanna use woven over the 1708.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
Well that stringer repair should be a realtivly easy fix.... I'll try to come by this weekend if your working on it and give you a hand. My mother is coming into town tomorrow to see the baby so, not sure what the women have on the agenda! Let me know what your doing..
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
how do you think id go about fixin that? i was thinking of digging all the foam out and refilling it and letting it expand out the side and form the foam so i have something to lay the glass against. starting with 3/4oz chopped strand and work my way up to bigger glass.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
I would really consider using epoxy instead of glass to repair that stringer and reconnect it. Glass will only give you a mechanical bond, where epoxy will give you both a mechanical and chemical bond. Also, this time of year, it will give you a longer working time.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
i hasve epoxy for it. i just call the cloth glass. im still trying to decide how to do it though.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
What I did with mine was clean it up good, use wood flour to thicken some epoxy to sticky paste, filled the gaps/etc with that.
Then I put 3 layers of 45/45 12 oz no matt tape with slightly thickened epoxy so it wouldn't run down the sides. I posted a bunch of pictures and info when I did mine at http://www.classicseacraft.com/forum...=&fpart=2&vc=1 If you have any questions, let me know, I have done a couple of these, and it's pretty much the same thing each time. |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
john, i just looked at your whole thread. VERY informative. i really like the way it came out. i do have lots of questions for you. ill get those to you soon. i have the same merc in my garge for the boat. mine has a bad cylinder. how was it on the boat??
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
The merc was great, right to the point the crank broke on the bearing at the bottom of the motor :(.
Lot's of power, but thristy, and ate oil. The suzuki is down maybe 5% in power from the merc, but the economy is incredible. I went from burning 50-70 gals of gas and 2+ gals of oil to burning 32-46 gals of gas. Gut my fuel bill in 1/2. |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
got a little more progress done tonight. did i mention it was slow progress? i started to dig out the foam in the cut stringer. i found alot of wet foam in it. now to finish that stringer ive got to cut the floor to get to the top of the aft part of the stringer. going to go in from the top back there. since that one side was wet im considering opening up the other one and digging all that foam out and putting fresh back in and sealing it all up. what do you guys think? i now have another question regarding the floor since i need to cut it out, i have to cut the bottom layer of the inner liner out, would it be a good idea to leave as much of the bottom layer still attached so i can make some fiberglass cleats and put the bottom layer back together? ill get some pics of what im talking about this week if anyone is confused. as always opinions and tips are appreciated.
i saw this little saw in stricks post. this was my arsenal for getting the foam out. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h1...boatporn17.jpg is any of this stuff recycleable?? i have plenty. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h1...boatporn18.jpg this is the front of the stringer. still needs to be vacuumed out. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h1...boatporn19.jpg this is the aft part of the stringer that i need to get out from the top. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h1...boatporn20.jpg |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
i also stopped by composities one today to ask about bluewater 26 prices. they can get it for me, but they said they have penske board 24lb. foam board in 1.5" available now for a little less money. anyone have any experience with this compared to the coosa??

Re: Who wants boat porn?????
i did some more demo work today. i have to take the floor out on the port side right away to get access to the full stringer so i can repair it. the top layer of skin came off very easy. some of the wood under it was very mushy. there is a few good sections still. i got shut down tonite at about 9:30. i guess hammering makes a little more noise than i thought. does anyone know of a good way to get that good wood off the bottom layer of skin?? some one wedged some plywood between the stringer to support the floor. a HUGE chunk of cabosil was loose under there too. on to the pics.

Re: Who wants boat porn?????
I recored every hatch and the transom in my 20' sf. When I had good wood that was still attached to the skin I used a skill saw with the blade set very shallow, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Then I cut a checker board pattern in the good wood. With a screwdriver or a very small pry bar you can usually peel back some of the layers of the plywood. Then you can use a grinder with a 24 grit disk to remove the bulk of whats remaining. Be careful as the 24 grit disk is very aggressive. When you get close to the glass surface, switch to a less aggressive disk. I like 80 grit at that point. Hope this helps. There's really no easy way to remove all that wood.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
that is helpful. thanks! im going to be going to get some grinder discs today then. stay tuned for pics later
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
I used 2 strips of plywood to make pads for the skillsaw to slide on. Set the blade 1/8' above the glass under the core.
Moved back and forth against the side of the blade. Easy and fast. Don`t go too deep. |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
i took will and sandys advice and used a circular saw to cut a checker pattern in the good wood. i used a rubber mallet and a chisel/prybar to get under the wood and get it off. next on the agenda is to use the sanding disc on the grinder to get the surface smoothed out. i also need to find a way to get the wood out from under the existing lip. im starting to think that my plan of saving the bottom skin is more work than its worth. suggestions are always welcome.

Re: Who wants boat porn?????
I did a much smaller repair for asoft spot on the floor of mine i measured about 2x 4 feet. I 1st cut the area around the soft area leaving a lip similar to yours. To dig out the wood under the lip I used a small electric chainsaw and carefully got 99% of the old stuff out. If you need I can come by and bring the saw to you. It worked pretty well
Let me know if you need it Jorge |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
thanks jorge. sure ill give the saw a shot. let me know when is a good time for you.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
i'll be going to costco tomorrow and ill drop it by the fence if no ones home
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
i get home at 4:30. if its before that no one will be there. stop by anytime you want to take a look.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
holy crap, is that blob of putty all that was used to bond the sole/cap to the tops of the stringers
How far above the tops of the stringers is the surface of the sole? Im wondering if I wont cut the tops off the stringers and raise them so the sole can be epoxied down to the stringer top. Joel |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
it has to be about 2 inches. some one stuck those 4 layers of plywood in there too.
|
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
im going to look at a bracket now and i looked online at how to measure transom angle with the carpenters square. i get 3.25 inches on mine so that equals 13 degrees? the same principal would work on the bracket too wouldnt it? put the square on the swim platform and measure where the short side hits the bracket??
on another note there is a little bit of a hook in my hull. is there anyway to fix that?? |

Re: Who wants boat porn?????
Blue, I looked at a 23 Sceptre up in Jupiter for Island Trader before he found his 21. As I remember, it was an 80's vintage post-Potter era boat, and it also had a hook in center panel on port side, about 1' fwd of transom.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...epter23001.jpg As I understand it, there was one Potter mold that had a hook in it and he supposedly warned the SeaCraft Industries outfit about it when they bought him out and told them not to use it. However it evidently did get used anyway. Denny |

Re: Who wants boat porn?????
Does that little of a "Hook" really make any difference in performance? Or is it just cosmetic, and give us something to talk about and compare?

Re: Who wants boat porn?????
well i may be putting off my 23 project totally. i came across a 23 contender that has not been used for about 6 years. its been hanging on their dock. i would be able to pick it up for less than i would be putting into my 23 project. i should find out by the end of the week if the deal goes through or not. it needs to be re-wired and have the hydraulic steering fixed and have electronics put in it. i know its a good hull too so i dont think ill be unhappy with it.

Cross the drains. Love it. My hooks are on the second panel. I love cooking onions. Cheers, GFS |

IMHO if you can rebuild the hull you really want with materials and techniques that will make it last at least a generation, then your better off vs buying another used boat at the same price that may need that same work eventually. Of course if the idea is to get back out on the water ASAP then I completely understand. I have agreed to buy my 23CC (pick up in the next week) or else I would offer to buy your project from you. good luck with either choice. Joel |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
well that MAY get me off the hook for saying I was coming by and never did.
Life just got complicated and I just plain forgot. Good luck on the new purchase, I saw a SeaVee in the neigborhood that has not been used much with 2 140's that he's trying to sell. I made the guy an offer but he did not take it....well months later he had it for sale and the ask price was less than my offer. If you want to see it I think he still has it...let me know |
Re: Who wants boat porn?????
no worries jorge. i put a deposit on the tender tonight. i will pick it up friday. the 225 ox66 yamaha has excellent compression, the steering needs to be fixed, im going to re-wire it so i know its good, upgrade all lights to LED's, buff and polish it. needs electronics too but i can use a handheld gps just to run it around. the reason for buying this boat was that i got it for about 5k less than i would need to put into my project. the plan is to fix up the tender and use it and if i dont like it then ill still have the seacraft to rebuild and i can sell the tender. it will come home friday so there will be pics friday nite.
