Is this where Boat Builders Annonomous meets?

hi my... My name is Jeff and I'm a BoatBuilderAholic. There I said it. Its been 9 years 10 months 21days since my last build. Well thats not exactly true I've helped buddies with their boats A rebuild or repower here, a rigging or new outdrive there(I just needed a little Taste). "I thought I could Handle it!".

Then My so called friends started in "Do you know anything about Jet boats? The Yellowtail are Hitting! What kind of boat should I get? You should get a boat". I SHOULD GET A BOAT! They know how hard it is for me to stop at just one. Do you see what kind of friends I have.

Then a couple of weeks ago I was cruz'n Craigslist looking at the boats for a friend (No No Really) and up popped a cute 20' Seafari.

Oops got to go so I will finish this when I get home.

So where was I oh yah seafari. Made a call and then went to see her as I slood looking across the fence at her I could swear I heard her calling "come stand on my nice soft decks" and I did and they were soft almost as soft as her Transom but she still called "buy me, take me home, fix me and I will go fishing any time you want. I made a offer but couldn't possibly come close to the asking she just needed to much. Iwas told they would get back to me later that night but no call came.

The next Day found me looking at a 30' SeaRey just to freaking big I like trailer'n

Sunday I found McGillicuddy's CL post for his 23' Seavette but by the time we made contact it was to late to see the boat we would have to wait until monday night after work.
Monday morning I when to Classic seacraft.com and down loaded the 2 views and specs for the Seavette.http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...31Seavette.jpg The Seavette had in my opinion the worse upper lines of any SeaCraft I wanted her to fish and camp on so if I bought her she would need a nose job.

****Note purest please don't scroll past here****

So My plan is...

I think we have an(other) new patient with SCS! (SeaCraft Syndrome) :D :D :D

Bless his heart. Don't anyone break it to him that it is a terminal! condition!

Re: Is this where Boat Builders Annonomous meets?

Welcome aboard Jeff! The addiction/affliction isn't terminal, but there is no known cure, except maybe more than one SeaCraft! Gillie was most impressed that you already had a plans drawn up for the boat when you came to see it! We're all looking forward to hearing about them!

Yea My fish'n buddies use to joke I would die with a pole in one hand and resin roller in the other. http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...020_071431.jpg
Day 2: Outside those doors it was really raining and cold. that heater was going full blast

wildlandjeff 10-27-2010 11:58 PM

Re: Is this where Boat Builders Annonomous meets?

Thanks for the welcome. Gillie came by Sat. Day 5 with more boat stuff from his shed and I put him to work. While Gill and my brother Jon took the trim tabs off I got the top ready to move
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...-32-50_817.jpg
This move was to see if I could live with the gofast windshield.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...-25-25_808.jpg
My Girl friend said she wouldn't go to Catalina with me unless the cabin was inclosed. What? duct tape and butcher paper works for me. Really I wanted to look at just the relationship between the windshield and hull lines the paper was to keep your eyes focused on that and not what held it up there.

Hey Jeff,
Thought I 'd chime in and say hello.
And thanks for buying the Seavette.
You ain't muckin' around!

For all of you purists - fret not... This boat is in good hands.

When Jeff and Jon came over we talked boats, restorations, design adaptation and SeaCrafts for 3 hours. What a pleasure! When Jeff showed me his plan I was, "Wow!, a man with a plan!"

I took a picture of your boat the other day cause I never got a good look from the side once it was in my driveway.

So I messed with your SeaCraft Seaburban a bit. Sorry, I couldn't get the whole bracket in:

If you're on it tomorrow I'll drop by and restock the shop fridge...

Nice work Jeff!! I always liked the design below and though the cabin design would make a nice west coast seavette.

Jeff, here's another idea for shape of the cabin top, the Moesly 27 Seamaster from Carla's web site, sort of a Seafari on steroids! BTW, you'll enjoy that web site - Moesly is also a pilot, and with over 13,000 hours, he's flown most of the WWII vintage aircraft!

Here's some shots of a 27 near me that was for sale a year or so ago.

Denny, that's actually a 27' SeaVilla. The SeaMaster doesn't have the big side windows.

Re: Is this where Boat Builders Annonomous meets?

Looks like quite a project your undertaking.... Are you going to fill in the top of the transom extension?? Might look cool to leave the top open and extend just the bottom to hang the motors on?? Like a bracket on steriods?
You probably have other plans, just an idea.

My lab relaxing...

I like it! Welcome to the club. We need more brothers on this side of the country. Looking forward to seeing it come along. Your gonna love that boat....I had entertained the idea of buying it when it first came up for sale a couple years ago but I did not know what the heck I would do with it. Wish I had your vision :D

Re: Is this where Boat Builders Annonomous meets?

Thanks Strick I've seen your work and if you had the desire or need for a boat like this you would have built it a long time ago.

This has to be the toughest 33 year old boat I have ever disasembled. I was a little worried with the loose tabbing in the bilge but that was limited to things like the shelf the tank and batteries sat on and not the lay up of the stringers. The liner is still well stuck to the top of the stringers and most of soft spots in the deck are a result of seat mountings and holes cut through the coreing not being sealed and limited to the immediate area.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...-43-52_967.jpg
A little careful sawsall work on the foam and out the tank came.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...-13-51_174.jpg
This crack was found under the Seavette rear cap it starts where you see and only goes half way down the in side. There are two cracks on the top of the deck in this same area on both sides of the old engine well but the stingers don't show any weakness or damage. I think when they patched the rotting transom the plates transfered the fore aft torque of the engines to the combing and deck rather than the hull and stringers.

Re: Is this where Boat Builders Annonomous meets?

Hey, Jeff, welcome to CSC. Although I hate to see a Seavette disappear because they're so rare, it looks like you're going to end up with an even rarer, one of a kind, 23 Seafari Seaburban. Good luck with the restoration. Looks like you're making rapid progress. You might have saved a lot of work if you could have found a 25 Seafari. If he hasn't already sold it, I think strick has a spare one laying around. :D

First off welcome to CSC Jeff, great to have another
imagineer on board.. :D

Sorry to break it to you Fr. Frank...
It is a SeaMaster!
The SeaVilla has no flybridge.

Here is my project 27 SeaMaster in the back yard.

We've all done this. That said...I'm not feeling it. The hull and windshield have lots of rake and angularity and the abruptness of the "pop up" looks out of place.

Not trying to be a jerk, just some honest input before you spend a lot of time and money. Good luck.

Understood. I have a Radon after all...pretty much the ugliest boat ever UNLESS you are weird like me. The difference though is that Radons are ugly from their inception. I hang out here for the eye candy.

Heck, I thought Radon was something here in Florida you had to have your house inspected for from radioactive soil. However, I bit, and looked up their web site....never even heard of them. Not too ugly compared to some Boston Whalers I've seen.

Always wondered about Radon's. Well thought of hulls, look efficient, but also like they would beat your kidneys to bloody mush. How do they get away with the steering station so far forward?

Maybe it's because the long swells in the Pacific are a little easier to handle than the steep chop we tend to get in the Atlantic, especially if the wind is blowing against the gulf stream! Not that the Pacific can't get rough, but I suspect that percentage-wise, the east coast tends to see rougher seas. It does looks well protected for that cold water spray!

Re: Is this where Boat Builders Annonomous meets?

They ride better than you would think going into it, and ride downhill better than anything. Everything is pushed to the front so you can pile a ton of crap on the back. They are more of a tool than anything. Most are butt ugly but I like them anyway.

Here is mine...
