1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

Time to start tearing into another project.
On tap is
-New floor raised 4"
-New enclosed transom with bracket
-Recore top cap
-Add glass and fair out sides of boat on inside
-Fix all holes, cut outs, scraps, dints, dings etc...
-Blast bottom paint off
-Fix trailer fenders
-New 50gal gas tank
-New rub rail
-Repaint outside fighting lady yellow and off white inside
My father had a couple days off from work and started taking the motor and t-top off for me today. Then I brought it home and started taking all hardware and things off. Amazing how fast you can tear down a boat compared to how long it takes to put it back together. The first pic is with a Johnson but recently bought a Yamaha 150 4stroke.

Nice ride! I am assuming that the previous owner was the cut the gunnels back and exposed the inside of the unfinished fiberglass? I ask because I would like to cut mine back as well. Unfortunately I don't have floor there so that could be a problem. Id like to see more pics of how the gunnel/line is cut out in the front if you don't mind. Thanks and good luck!

That's how the MAs were built. The cap and liner are different from the 20 SF. MA's gunwales are wider and rise higher above the hull/deck joint.

Oh gotcha. I can see that clearly now that I look at the photos again. Thanks.

A lot of similarities to my 79 MA. Didn't realize that other interior gunnels may have had carpet glued to the unfinished woven roven glass. Thought a previous owner had installed it for some type of sound deadening or something. Would look a whole lot better finished right. Best of luck with your mods.. Part II.

I was under the impression that carpet was put on all of them, but I am not sure. Got some work done today. All I have to do now is remove the gas tank and get the bottom blasted next week before I put it up on boat stands. I will get some more pics this evening. Thanks

Yeah, I've had a '75 and a '85 and they both had the carpet.

Tank is out and the rub rail is off. I still have about 25gal of gas left in the tank that I need to pump out before I take it out the boat. Hopefully cut the floor out in the morning.

Ended up getting 30 some gals of gas out. Floor is out along with all the foam outside the stringers. Trying to figure out how exactly I am going to do the transom and top cap. Thought about using the gas tank but I am going to go ahead and buy a new one.

Looks just like my 76 except the top of one of my stringers failed and seperated. When I pulled the floor the top came with it. How much of a gap between floor and stringer did you have? Mine was approx 3/4 of an inch or more with th gap filled with a big turd of potter putty. The rear port stinger wasn't even bonden to the stinger. The thick bead of potter putty was there, but the gap was so large it never bedded. I was also suprised they never glassed over the holes for the foam? Good luck with the floor. Do you have a game plan?

Seacraft84 12-08-2010 11:25 AM

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

Yeah my gap was about the same. I basically cut the floor into three sections and it came right out. Most of the putty had broke loss from the floor. It was still glued to the stringers pretty good though.
I guess I am going to raise the floor 3-4" high. Mainly running some 2x6's from side to side every two feet. Where the seam in the plywood is going to be put 2 2x6's glassed together. Off course the 2x6's will be glassed to the stringers and hull and trimmed down to proper height. Then along the outside edge glass about an 1"- 1 1/2" ledge for the floor to sit on. Probably do that in 1/2" strips that I will steam so I can do it in one piece and fit the contour of the hull. I will put down some thickened resin and also screw the floor down. I may try and get away with 1/2" plywood and just put alot of glass on the bottom and top to make it all 3/4". That is what the original floor was. Of course my 23' I redid I put down 3/4 plywood. That was definatly strong.

How has yours been coming along? Any pics?

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

Started on the transom. Alot of wet plywood up top and at the bottom. The foam had minimal water in it so I will just leave the foam alone. Sanded down all the high glass on the sides so I can blast them when I blast the hull, making it so I do not have to sand all of it.
Look at the close up of the transom. Where the stringers are and where the wood shelf was glassed in at the transom they did not even glass the transom to the hull. All the wood under there was rotten.

My friend over at CarolinaSodaBlast.com offered to let me blast the boat at his place. Used his farrow system blaster and it did an awesome job. Not to many dings and nicks for a 34 year old bottom. Also blasted the inside to get it cleaned up and to rough it up so I can lay another layer of glass on it. Alot better than sanding!!

Pulled most of the wood off the transom and ground out the holes in the hull that will not be used again. My father went and picked up my wood for me. 6 sheets 3/4" Aquatek. Some 1/2" and 1/4" Aquatek left over from my fathers boat build. Then some 3/4" divinycell that I will use under the top cap.
Next step is glass all the places in the bottom, fair out the outside bottom of the hull and put the transom in. Hopefully the tank will be here in about 2 weeks.

Cleaned the rest of the transom and sanded it down to get it ready to put the transom in. Cut out the transom. 2- 3/4" sheets. Started fairing the bottom.
Hopefully get the transom all glassed in this week.

good work on the stern

Seacraft84 12-29-2010 02:57 AM

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

Thanks. Still needs a belt sander to it to fine tune the curve.
Glassed up the holes for the fish box drain and floor drains along with one of the thru-hull high speed pickups. Counter sunk all the screw holes in the transom, inside and out, to get it ready for the wood to be glassed in tomorrow evening. All the patches from previous holes and everything were redrilled also. Look at all the holes from transducers, swim platforms, and aux motor mounts the transom has had over the last 33 years.
Going to lay down a thick bead of cabosil mixture along the perimeter of the transom, and all holes will get cabosil in them and then some troweled across the whole stern. Two layers of 1.5oz mat sandwiched between the transom glass and wood. Then I am going to screw the glass into the wood and let it set up, while I attach the second sheet.

Nice work. I really like the curve you've done on the top of the transom. I think that looks a lot more elegant than a flat top transom. Isn't it amazing how many holes can get drilled in a boat over the years?

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

Thanks man. My 23' had the flat transom, but like you said the curve gives it some more style. Yeah I figured as soon as I would use the boat a couple times at least one of them holes would pop out through the paint. So I just drilled them all out and start from scratch.

Got the transom glassed in tonight. Next week I will unscrew it, sand it down and then finish glassing the inside and outside.
My dad came over this afternoon while I was at work and started cutting the cross members the floor will mount to. 2x6's ripped down to 2x4's. They of course will be glassed fully and then glassed and glued to the stringer and hull.

Put some knees in for the transom, and the rigging pipe. The knees will be glassed to the stringers and floor and will replace the stringers that I cut out. The knees will be notched out so the back 2x4 will sit inside of it flush with the top. I am going to build a box in the corner to run my rigging up and my bilge pump hoses.

All the floor supports are glassed. Rigging tube has had final cuts. The knees for the transom have been cabosiled in. I just need to grind it down and wrap it all in glass. The fuel tank is in. It is a 50gal plastic Inca. The pickup and sending unit will be under the console. I will just need one plate to access the fill and vent up front. The box behind the tank will be for my life jackets. I will have a hatch under the console as well. Now all I need to do is grind where everything is going and glass it all in. Also finished putting some fairing compound on the bottom of the hull and transom.

The floor supports are now glassed in. I will get the knees and the last support glassed up tomorrow night and then start cutting the floor out. And yes the tank is leaning some. It just needs to be center up and the blocks glassed into the side of it.

Did you buy the tank directly from INCA. I called them a few months ago and was told they only sell to OEM's. It looks just like the Moeller tank.

I am asking because I really do not know.... But wouldn't the point where you go from the standard stingers to the new "knees/stringers" become a weak spot since they are simply butted up against each other and not really structurally "one"?

Interested to see that answer from you gurus!

Anyways, nice work, I love watching these builds. I recently worked with a shop who graciously allowed me to come over after work each day and work at night with him thus saving a chunk of change. I learned a lot from this guy and loved the rehab process!

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

I believe the strength is in the glass when done properly. That's where you make it "one".

Seacraft84 01-20-2011 02:07 PM

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

The knees were cabosiled to the existing stringer first then 2 layers of 1708 on them. I am no engineer but I think with those being glassed to the hull, transom and floor, it should not go anywhere. You have to think also that the floor is going to tie all the supports and knees together too. Tonight I am going to cut some pieces that go between all the supports, on the sides, and backside of transom, to help support the floors edge.

Hope it kinda answers your concern??

All the air was rolled out of the glass for a tight bond. Some of the pics it looks white still like air is under it but that is where the cabosil is sanded down.

Thanks guys.

Good talking with you Kyle.

Honestly that is about the first time we have had some beers on the job. Right before chritmas I was working alot, 5am-4pm, and just did not have much time to drink. And trying to juggle a 19 month old, wife, and only a couple hours a night to work, drinking has took the back burner. But when this thing is done you bet there will be some cold ones on board.

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

the boat is looking good, lot of work into it so far.
I've got a comment about your fuel tank...When I bought a Moeller tank, also plastic/cross linked poly like yours, they say to leave an inch gap around the tank for expansion. Maybe the Inca tank is different, might be worth lookin into though, your tank looks like a pretty tight fit in there.
Also might think about makin the section of cross supports above the tank removeable in case you ever need to remvoe the tank, though that shouldn't be anytime soon.
And don't count on the floor to tie the stringer sections together, overlap that area with plent of glass. Stringers are reinforcing the floor not vice versa.
Anyway like I said looks really good so far, keep the hull vented when you're finished and it'll last a long time.

Seacraft84 01-21-2011 11:25 AM

Re: 1977 20ft Master Angler Restoration

Thanks man. Yeah that tank is a tight fit but there is about 1/2" on the sides and the top and bottom have plenty of room for exspansion. I wanted to get it in there as tight as I could, so it would not move around, yet leave alittle wiggle room. Last night I put some wedges in the top of it at the front bulkhead to hold it down and also put some blocks at the rear of it under the floor supports to help hold it down. I will post pics later.
If the tank ever becomes an issue I will cut the supports out when I cut the deck up. Hopefully It will never be touched until another 20 years at least. All the other stuff held up 34 years and I think what I am putting back is even better.

Well I know the stringers support the hull from flexing and give the floor something to attach to. My comment about the floor helping hold the stringers together is basically saying it is going to add that much extra support. Like I said if this boat held up 34 years, all this extra glass is doing nothing but making it stronger. And the floor supports are cabosiled in with two layers of 1708 where ever it is glassed. There will be no foam going back in it and there is nothing but open space under the floor so she should stay well vented.
Keep the comments coming. I am always open to ideas and things that I can improve on.
