1972 23' cc project
picked it up back in october and started to rip it apart the following day,its getting a full transom with a bracket and a suzuki 4stroke along with a custom doghouse for the cape waters, the floor and stringers are solid, she needs paint and a little work on the cap, the vents will also be filled in to give it that smooth clean look. any input on the rebuild would be great.any help with adding pics would be great to.

First off, welcome to CSC.... DO NOT FILL IN THE VENTS!!!! The inner hull cannot breath without them! See ya, Ken |
Re: 1972 23' cc project
well i've already got the 2 rear vents filled and faired so i gotta go ahead and continue with the fronts. they looked like they were just solid boxes to begin with anyways. Re: 1972 23' cc project
looks good. You planning to run the deck right back to the transom?
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
yea that is the plan as of now, I like the open feeling in the boat and it kinda makes it look a little bit bigger on the inside as well.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
Welcome to CSC Willy
Since you have posted your project start pictures, I'm going to move the thread to the "Repairs Section" BTW: As Nobones ponited out, those VENTS have saved many a decks from rotting out ;) |
Re: 1972 23' cc project
Plus, IMHO they are what makes the classics a classic.

Regardless of the seas, if a Seacraft takes on enough water through the bilge vents to be in danger, in my opinion, it isn't rigged correctly and needs more bilge pump capacity. I have a 20 SF and have had it out in pretty snotty conditions. The bilge vents have never been an issue. It may be less of an issue in drier climates, but I would keep the bilge vents for all the reasons stated above. Dave |

yep that would be me, I didnt miss a single bass day this year because of that little suzuki on the never satisfied. codfeesh do you have a small house on your red 23'? I figured that if i filled them that it would be one less place for water to get into the bilge. Plus in my opion I think it looks better.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
nice,WAS A GOOD SEASON TO NOT MISS A DAY.yup its got a doghouse on it. bought it with the one on it made of starboard dont really like it but it keeps me dry so i havent change it yet.maybe this winter though..

Re: 1972 23' cc project
cool man, I remembered the red hull beacause i think it was the only one out there. how do you like the i/o in it? any problems with it?
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
any chance you are willing to sell the vents and coaming bolsters?
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
i know it sticks out like a sore thumb.i like the i/o but ive had my share of problems with it.motors benn hanging from a tree twice since 04 when i put it in.first was the coupler aluminum stripped out put steel coupler in no problems since.then oil pan was leaking probably my fault hit the quick drain plug that hangs out the pan a bit on the center stringer when putting it in the boat and didnt notice it til it started rusting and leaking.both things happened in the middle of a bass season of course, but i was atleast able to get them fixed fast myself.if was an outboard prob woulda been sitting at a dealer somewhere.other than that coil, water pump, alternator.
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
yea if something is gonna break its always gotta be during bass season.sounds like you have had all the same problems that i had in my i/o.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
picked up a nice dog house for the boat yesterday, its in great shape and only needs a few mods to make it right. Im going to raise it about 6 inches and make a new dash so i can fit a 12inch screen in it. also was thinking about cutting the right side open with a hinge on it so i could fight a fish and get to the wheel/controls easier, what you guys think? http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0321.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0318.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0319.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0320.jpg

Re: 1972 23' cc project
wow...nice dog house. Is it an Alcar or from Fib Fab?
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
it came off a 21 alcar from the late 80's

Re: 1972 23' cc project
Man, that would have looked SWEET on the '71 I had redone!
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
I'm jealous. I want one of those for my 23' bad! I would be willing to trade my new T-top for something like that.

For making mods to dog house (i.e. new dash) one technique I plan to use is to stitch and glue with ply and glass; wood screws or zip ties to brace until you get your glass on and can back them/cut them out. This guy (Edward_Anderson) does a lot of custom fabrication of structures (poly/glass over ply) and says he uses a glue gun (lots of glue) to hold the ply forms together before the glass/ploy go on: (got page 4) http://www.fishyfish.com/boards/index.php?topic=956.45 http://www.fishyfish.com/boards/index.php?topic=259.0 http://www.Andersoncustomboats.com/ |
Re: 1972 23' cc project
you can prob build one for less than 3-400. I used west systems and expensive wood to make the window frames on mine but you can certainly do it cheap with poly resin and lexan for the windows
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
i built 2 of them last winter and they probaly cost me about 500 each but theres alot of sanding fairing sanding fairing, O and lots of time to. but it just depends on how picky you want to get with it for the end cost results.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
sweet!

Re: 1972 23' cc project
I think I will run mine with the t-top this season and start the process of building the Pilot house on the weekends that I can't fish. If any of you Cape Cod guys come accross one for sale or some one wanting to trade one for a t-top please let me know.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
finaly got something done.made the mold out of scrap plywood and 2x4's. it wasnt perfectly smooth when i pulled it out but not to bad for my first time with the mold making.hopefully I can get it glassed in and do a little fairing on it this weekend. http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0325.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0328.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0331.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0332.jpg

Re: 1972 23' cc project
Looks pretty good to me. Turned out pretty smooth and released from the mold. You gotta be happy with that. What is the white material you lined the mold with?

Re: 1972 23' cc project
Looks great.
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
it was a $11 piece of panel board (mdf)thats about a 1/8'' thick, the white side was painted realy smooth so all i did was wax it with some mothers and it turned out pretty good for me.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
yea I think you probaly could get away with it. Its not as smooth as a piece of glass but if you were to take your time with the edges and the waxing then I bet you it would work.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
So my progress has been slow but I have managed to get a little done lately.I was able to cut out some more of the floor and patch the big hole on the inside.I used 4 layers of 1708 mat. hopefully I can get the outside done this weekend.I had used a 2x4 screwed to a peice of 3/4'' plywood to keep the hull side straight when I glassed it up. http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0351.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0350.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0349.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0352.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0353.jpg I also had some time to get the front vents filled to. (sorry guys but I just like the smooth look a little better) http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0355.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0354.jpgThen on saturday when it was raining off and on and I couldnt get any glass work done i decided to get out the pressure washer and try to get some of the old bottom paint off. some of it came off good and other spots theres still a good amount left on there. I guess Im gonna have to sand it. http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0361.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0360.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0359.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0358.jpg I also had picked up this fighting station from my neighbor this weekend for free, not bad huh http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0363.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0362.jpgI'm thinking about painting it white. has anyone painted stainless before?? any suggestions would be great.thanks
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
Stainless is better poweder-coated, I think.
|
Re: 1972 23' cc project
Fr.frank, thanks for the tip. i will look into the powder coating.

Re: 1972 23' cc project
I started sanding the bracket well over a month ago, this past weekend I was finally able to finish it and get it in primer. so then when it was dry I just had to put it up there to see how it was going to look. http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0375.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0376.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0377.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0378.jpg http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...y/IMG_0379.jpg
