Re: my new '72 20'sf
Nice boat. How did you get so lucky as to find a 20 sf with only 220 original hours?
Looks like it sits perfectly balanced with that low rider truck of yours. strick |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
Looks very nice. I love that "Tower of Power" on the back.
Only thing is, nice as it is, Seafoam Green isn't the original color if it's really a '72 hull. From 1970 through '74 they offered dark blue, light blue (aqua), yellow, red, and white hulls only. The yellow was changed in '73 to a slightly lighter shade, as well. While I know it was available in '69 on the 19', Seafoam green wasn't listed as being offered as an original color between 1970 and '75. (Not sure about the year of re-introduction of the color) So whoever painted or re-gelcoated the hull did a very nice job. |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
Great lookin, Congrats. I gotta agree that old clamshell inline Merc. Looks cool and correct on the back. Good luck.

Re: my new '72 20'sf
Thanks for the comments. Idk if this was a one off deal or something, but there are is a chip in the gelcoat that makes the glass visible, and there isn't any signs of it being any other color. The guy I bought it from said it was the original color. Although per the literature, the color is not a factory color.
I am the 3rd owner of this boat, the 2nd was 23 when he bought it from an Estate Sale @ Johns Pass Marina, in Madeira Beach, FL. He is a little over 50, and I am 23 buying his old boat. I plan to have it around for a while. At any rate, I am stoked to finally own a SeaCraft. I'll be posting more on it in the near future. -Brad |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
Great boat, congradulations!!!! That console looks like from a 70' or so, the 72' consoles are different, I think.

Re: my new '72 20'sf
^^ Thank you, your "coral reefer" is quite the set up. When you put the 200 yami on there, how bad did it affect the rear through bottom scuppers? Do you always have to plug them?

Re: my new '72 20'sf
Brad, looks great!
Great name and artwork, too  Good luck with her. As I mentioned before, I run the same motor. If you get a chance I wonder if you could get some pictures of your trim pump setup (location and mounting) and one showing how your trim hoses run from motor through/across the splashwell. Thanks. |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
McGillicuddy- My trim pump is located in the storage/battery hatch to the left of the splash well. I am curious, might you know the year of this motor ?? I know that's a really crazy question lol. But my motor i.d plate is no longer legible. I'm thinking it's '82-'83, not sure though. Have you had any issues with your trim??

The cowl pinstriping changed from sparkled/metalflake blue/silver in '79, to 75/25 sixed wide blue/thin lt blue metalflake in '80-81, to 60/40 sized blue/lt blue stipes in '82-83, to brown/tan in '84, as well. If you have ADI ignition (switch boxes with no distributor) with seeing the 60/40 sized blue/lt blue pinstripes in the picture, then I think you're in fact looking at '82-83. |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
Fr. Frank, you know your -ish lol. I do have an ADI ignition system. She's gonna be a ripper.

Re: my new '72 20'sf
Thanks for the pics Brad. I concur with Fr Frank's take. Mine is a tail end 83 and looks identical. That's an interesting grommet box on the splash well. You're in good shape with those stainless replacement hoses. My hoses were shot from rubbing on the transom and motor mounts. I just replaced them with the sierra version which appear to be junk already. I guess my adjustment is as good as its gonna get for now...
Regarding the trim motor, I recently had a failure right when I got home from a trip. I trimmed up to trailer but it quit when trying to trim it down to flush. Fortunately it's is a good simple motor and it proved to be a wear issue. I just replaced the brushes and a corroded ground screw and works fine again. If it ever fails the first things to look at are the reservoir (fill while motor is up)and the battery must be charged. If those things are ok then go to the manual and use the trouble shooting section. Fr Frank posted some good advice a couple years back about these motors Here's the link: http://www.classicseacraft.com/forum...rev=#Post56946 Short of the limited range during tuna season, I've been pleased with my motor. Cheers, Gillie |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
Thanks for the info!
The Marathon well in the back of the boat, do you think the holes drilled in the back of the transom would inhibit water intrusion? Has this ever been an issue with anyone?? |

That's how I used to go 100 miles offshore to the Florida Middle Grounds with my Seafari. I used to go to N28*31'48.4 W84*15'28.8 to start my drifts. Google it. It was 85 miles on a compass heading of 242* from the launch point at Cedar Key, or 97 miles heading 257* from Fort Island. Usually about 4.5 hours travel time to get there, cause one of the boats I went with was only capable of cruising at about 20 mph. Are your tuna fishing grounds further out than 100 miles? |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
its funny, i used to have the same exact truck. 4.3l v6 auto xtreme. how does it tow that boat?
|
Re: my new '72 20'sf
Lol, good stuff. I have the same engine, with the 5 speed, and 3.73 limited slip. You can hardly feel it back there. It doesnt mess with the suspension that much, lowers about .5" when I put the trailer on. I can't complain, it does the job!

Re: my new '72 20'sf
My 72 SF came with a Mariner about the same age with the exact same trim setup as yours (same engine as Merc different label). Trim started working after I refilled it and bled the air out. The motor had not been started in 15 years. I took it to the ramp and it started, but all of the gas lines burst because they were so dry rotted so you might want to do that because it is not very expensive and is easy to do. I also had to replace the wiring and of course the water pump. Have fun with the motor. You won't find any that light any more.

Re: my new '72 20'sf
Very cool! I love the color, but I am a bit bias'd :D
I know mines a pre-72 and its the same 'seafoam' teal color. and has never been painted. |
Re: my new '72 20'sf
That is just sweet.

Re: my new '72 20'sf
Thanks for the kind words! That'd be cool if we could sometime. I'm normally in the Bay Pines area. But I travel all around lol. I am thoroughly impressed with the ride of this boat. I've put about 10 hours on it in the past week, and everytime I take it out. I love it more and more. I find that I just set the trim, a hair above neutral, cruise about 3800 and it plows through everything. Super impressed, with the ride quality, but the fuel efficiency of the old I6 SUCKS! haha. My fuel numbers are pretty much dead on with McGillicudy, as he has the same motor, and prop as I do. I figure the motor only has 277 hours on it now to date, so i'll run it for a little while longer, then re-power with a 115 E-TEC H.O :). As of now with the 15p black max aluminum prop, im topping out @ 35-36 with 2 people and a half tank of gas, but the motor was turnin about 6k?? I didn't hold it there long, but that seems pretty high to me. Thinking maybe getting a 13x17p??...waiting for Fr. Frank to chime in lol.
