'86 SeaCraft information

Does anyone know who owned SeaCraft in '86? More importantly, how was the quality at that point?

Anyone want to venture a guess why my 81's serial # starts with TXY ???

Re: '86 SeaCraft information

It says Carribbean Sailing Yachts (csy) is the parent comany of Sarasota Marine Corp (txy). Carribbean Sailing Yachts (csy) owned seacraft 1980-1982 so that could possibly be why. Just a guess

Not sure if this post belongs in General or Performance, but since it's specific to a 20' '86 SeaCraft CC, I'll ask it here. Does anyone know the maximum hp rating for this boat?

I don't know if there is any difference in the year models, but, this might give you an idea. I can't imagine there being much difference in hp.

I believe all the 20s up through the '80s were rated for 175hp. I know the Seacraft Industries boats in the early '80s were. But folks routinely put 200s and 225s on them. My '83 SF has a 200 and it is not overpowered from a safety standpoint. And I haven't had difficulty getting insurance.

How's the LCG with 200 HP? Any performance issues like getting on plane. I'm looking at a 20' (trim tabs, standard transom)with a 225hp that weighs about 477 pounds.

Re: '86 SeaCraft information

I have a 87' 20 footer with a 200. it weighs just about 400 lbs. I dont have trim tabs and ive got no preformance issues. It gets on a plane fine and handles great. Only thing with a lot of weight back there you cant plane at really low speeds. I think mine planes out in the low 20's.

When your in the back corners of the boat water will come in through the scuppers. Your feet will get wet but for me its not an issue. I will have 2 people fishing off the back of mine and a little water will come in but it drains back out when the people move.

Mine goes 46-47 WOT and i can cruise at 30 around 4000rpms. Overall im very satisfied

So the heavy weights are parked forward to get on plane early and stay there to fish, or they can stay on the dock. Thanks for including the speed and rpm data. I'll be interested to compare.

That's a lot of weight to hang on the transom of one of these 20s, but it's a lot of hp too. That setup will shift the LCG aft, which is ok for going fast in relatively smooth water. But if you're going to fish offshore, it may not be so great. These hulls will launch in a 2-3' sea at 20-25mph. I once tried to keep up with a friend in a 23 sport craft on a snotty day. When we got back to the ramp, he said "every time I turned around to see if you were still there, I saw air under your boat".

If the 225 is a 2-stroke, it may not like to run at the low RPMs necessary to run at a reasonable cruise speed in rough conditions. That may be a bigger issue than the LCG. So it depends on what you want the boat for. If you want to be able to cruise at 15-20mph, and you have the opportunity to do a sea trial, jump it on plane and then drop the throttle back until it starts to ride bow high, then kick the trim tabs down and see how slow you can go and keep her on plane.

When I first bought my 20, I thought I wanted to be able to go fast. After running it in typical Florida Big Bend conditions, I decided top end wasn't all that important. I played with props quite a bit and settled on a 17P Mirage because it provides the best compromise between top speed and cruise.
