'73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

I'll post pics when I can. I'm not doing the glass work on this boat. It will be done by a local professional. Transom re-cored, deck replaced, and all hatches will be re-cored. The rear bulkhead will have hatches instead of the bolt-in type doors. Transom to get more of an arch and cooler/fishbox. Interior will be painted. I have a Hermco bracket and McKee pogy pen ready to install. We will probably change the color and are considering Awlgrip Aqua mist. I believe Strick's 23' was this color. I stripped the boat and through bolted the cap with 10-32 SS screws, lock nuts, fender washers and 5200 as the cap and coring is fine. The next step is the glass man.

Lots of potential there! Was your boat originally a I/O or did someone enclose the transom and cap before you owned it? Aqua mist is a nice color choice.

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

This is the old "Her Paycheck" boat. The transom was enclosed and alum. bracket when I bought it 4 1/2 yrs. ago. That work was done in mid 90's. I could have probably waited several more years and patched a soft spot on the deck but.....

Thanks again for your help and I'm sure I'm not finished asking you questions :)

Are you switching brackets for twins or more flotation?

Old'sCool 01-30-2011 08:00 PM

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

Primarily flotation but it's nice to have options

Been a while but here goes......I need to finish all the goodies :)

I opted to go with hull vents and cut the holes before the glass man got the boat

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1/DSC_0570.jpg

Deck cut out

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DSC_0581-1.jpg

Transom replaced and tied in with raised stringers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1/DSC_0802.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DSC_0256-2.jpg

Fuel tank compartment rebuilt and new 118 Gal epoxy coated tank installed, no foam!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DSC_0300-1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DSC_0301-1.jpg

I chose a large bilge access, 2 large bulkhead accesses, large baitwell/cooler. It's blue inside and could be plumbed. I have a McKee pogy pen for the serious live bait so this is probably cooler.

Ice Blue Awlgrip with white, blue non skid on deck and white on cap areas

The fish box is deeper with stringers taller :)

Looks great!
What is the inside of the forward compartment like? There is a picture where someone is standing in it. Mine is just opened. You can see the front of the fuel tank but my tank is moved all the way forward then I have the fish box aft of the console. I always wondered how they were layed out?

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

Is it opened beneath the fish box? I see there is a drain for the bow compartment, so is there a bulk head between the bow area and beneath the fish box? I should post a picture of my boat which might make it more logical what I am trying to ask. On my 23 the bow compartment is completely open. My fuel tank buts up to that compartment then it is open below and all the way through the bilge. I have been think about pulling the top cap and doing some kind of dry storage up there. So I am curious as to how the factory sea craft is set up. I figured mine was cut out at some point since the fuel tank is so far forward the there is a large fish box under the leaning post. If you could post some pictures of that area I would appreciate it!

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

ummmm....there is a bulkhead between the fish box and fuel tank. the fishbox (I don't use it for that) drains to bilge.

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

It's been HOT but I've been doing what I can. I hope to mount the bracket/engine this week. I installed Gem low profile deck drains, all hatches/hinges/latches/rod holders, etc. Most are drilled oversize, epoxied with West 610 and thru-bolted. I made the bow area access from 1/2" starboard and the gunwale supports from 1" starboard. I pilot drilled the transom from a template. The plan is to lag bolt the bracket and thru drill together from inside.

Please post photos of transom with drain outlets when done. I am about to redo the deck on my 1974 and likely will go with the same Hermco bracket. Thanks.

With those taller stringers (raised floor) that should make your scuppers a breeze! I had some trouble with mine because my floor is at stock height.

How difficult was that 1/2in starboard bulkhead (for the anchor locker) to get under the gunwale?

The 1/2" starboard is just the facade. The structural wood was intact. There was 1/4" smoked plexiglass that was cracked, etc.

Boat is coming along, I am sure you will be happy once it is complete!
I now see the drain on the bottom of the hull for the bow compartment. Mine does not have that. It just is open to below the fuel tank which just flow through the bilge.

I am also getting ready to order a hermco bracket. Is yours new or did you already have that? Is it the larger model or the single?

Looks great!,

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

Sorry more questions,
Every time I look at the pictures I see more things!
The compartment on the floor in front of the transom, what is it's use?
My hull was originally an inboard. They removed the engine box and I now have two large doors even with the floor. It is open with access to the bilge as well as the inside transom. It is a lot of room and would love to find a better use for it. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thank you. The Hermco bracket is new. It's his large model and capable of holding twins. The large hatch is bilge access.

So the heat index has been over 100 for way too long and it's hot as sh!t!!! I keep tellin' people it's my diet plan as I've lost 6 or 7 lbs. the past week. I should mount the bracket/motor this week. All rod holders, cleats, bow rail, hinges, etc. are on. I brightened up the t-top Sat. w/Woody Wax. The first time I've tried it and it seemed to do OK. Trim tabs are mounted and bracket relieved for short Bennett cyls. Pucker factor was way high drilling bracket/rigging holes. I decided to go with Hermco's thru-bracket rigging; Thanks Don!!

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

I moved some pics within photobucket so they don't show, sorry. The bracket/motor are on and yes, it's still over 100 here :) I decided to run the rigging through Don's bracket so the large hole gets his aluminum sleeve and the smaller hole gets pvc and hyd. steering. I still need to add the 5" Bay Manuf. engine extension to make this a 30".

Have you done the engine extension yet? If not could you please take pictures and post them with information?
Which leaning post is that? Looks like that is the live well? Can you also post some more pictures of that?
Thanks

I am impressed. looks really good. I think I am eventually going to buy a hermco bracket for mine... question: did you have to move the trailer axles any to compensate for center of gravity shift?? if so, approx. how much??

is that a scarab chris LED spreader light on the front of the electronics box? if it is how do you like it so far? i want to get some for my t top as well.

Thanks all!! Bay Mnfg ext. kit is 2-3 weeks backordered. McKee "pogy pen" lp/lw. mckeecustomboats.com The trailer was sized/adjusted with the old bracket. I haven't moved anything. Those are scarab chris led deck lights. They're very. very bright and burn nothing. My nav, deck, baitwell, and (eventually under gunwale) are led. I'll get more pics when Irene's over :(

Steve, FYI - I had to move axle aft about 12" on my 20 to get adequate tongue weight, but I also added new motor that was over 100 lbs heavier. Wouldn't think you'd have to adjust the trailer that much on a 23.

With the same motor, this will be an interesting back-to-back test to determine performance benefits of a bracket! Should be able to raise that motor at least 3-4" or so relative to keel, from where it was on transom! I went up over 4" on mine and AV plate is still not quite out of the water as it should be when on plane.

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

The wiring works :) All lights, pumps, etc. work. I moved oil tank and batteries forward and still have ~ 1 foot storage in front. The hanging wire will be pulled back through for under electronics box red/white light. I went with Blue Sea switch/ACR, external box, fuse and switch panels. I ran 1/0 cables to post in the rear. The small post is the Yamaha aux charging lead which I'm not using. I would like to give credit to www.genuinedealz.com on their wiring products, ability to follow fabrication instructions, pricing, and turn around time; Those guys are FAST!! I built the switch/key panel from 3/4" white starboard and the drip-lip from 1/4". The fuse panel cover is off in these pics. The Yamaha started right up! So I need to finish baitwell plumbing, mount leaning post, install Bay Mfg. engine extension, new water pump, rub rail (at some point) and tidy up a bit.

i like the oil tank up there. how much weight did it move forward?? also is there an access to fill it? it looks like it would be kinda hard to. btw how do you like the led spreader?? can i get a few night pics?? thanks

Old'sCool 09-21-2011 08:02 PM

Re: '73 23' Rework & boat porn :)

Not sure about the amount of weight moved forward ??? 2 Optimas and 1 oil tank?? I can reach the fill easy through the front console seat. Ill get night shots of the LED's for you.

I changed the water pump and installed the Bay Mfg. 5" extension kit last night. Yes, the woodruff key is HE!!, TG for Dremel :) I did have to "drill" the engine drive shaft channel with the 1 1/8" hole saw as Bay said might be needed. I rigged a 3/8" extension, 7/16" socket, hole saw and duct tape...this was special!
