pilot house ?
anybody have a 23 cc with a pilot house ?
would like to see a few pics-gonna get some ideas working... next season, after fishin's done-gonna pull the sea craft in the shop-deck's soft in a few spots.while i'm recoring the deck,i had an idea a few weeks ago,of putting a pilot house in it.after freezing my butt off winter wreck fishing, for a few seasons-last trip was friday 1/28/11-cold,snow,and freezing rain-i decided enough is enough.gonna build a pilot house-instead of the console and the t-top-i wanna keep the back open-winter fishing,i'll have a "drop back" made, plan on adding a small "buss heater",using the fresh water coolant system... anybody make this mod ? |
Re: pilot house ?
There have been a few, especially up on the Cape, mostly commercial or REAL serious sport guys. Also kerneltugboat (I think), put a put a hard pilothouse he found off an Aqua Sport, looked real good!
Do a search and I'm sure you'll find some. I think a "Coastie" who went by the name Chance123 did one to his 23' inboard. Anyone else out there that can confirm, deny or add to this info? |
Re: pilot house ?
Nice guy Joe from Brigantine has a really nice pilothouse bracketed 23'. JoeR I think knows how to get a hold of him, he slips down the way from him.

Re: pilot house ?
I will be building one out of divinycell or nida core in the next few weeks. Nothing special, commercial grade, but I am going to integrate a new console and engine box into it. 3 windows. It's going to look a little like this. If anyone has any constructive criticism as to what to use or how to build it, I am all ears. Re: pilot house ?
Tunameltdown, That looks perfect...only thing I would change is to have the sides extend a bit farther back...about 8 inches. It's nice to be able to tuck in out of the elements but does not impact movement.
|
Re: pilot house ?
Thats my plan. I want to run the sides back another 8-10" and the run the isen-glass gull wings from the rear edge of the house on each side over the gunwals. Basically protecting the entire cock pit from spray. That should keep my crew and I dry in most weather.

Re: pilot house ?
After seeing those pics have you snooping around my neck of the woods?
That white 23 is owned by the welder at Nauset Marine he fabricates some nice towers! That is one of Nauset's houses, they have the mold for 'em. There seams to be an increased interest in pilot houses these days. http://www.thehulltruth.com/northeas...lot-house.html |
Re: pilot house ?
Yeah, I have been doing alot of research on them over the past 2 weeks. Those pictures of the 23' at anchor were sent to me by Brent the boats owner. I would buy one already made but my issue is that none of them seem to be a perfect fit. They would all need to be tweaked in certain ways to be what I want. That and the prices are way out of my budget. I am going to try and build and glass one with the help of a few friends. Hopefully I'll learn a few thing along the way.

Re: pilot house ?
Getthenet (Nat) has one of the nicest doghouses I have seen. Something about curves just makes stuff look right.
|
Re: pilot house ?
I'm not much for CC's, i'm a Sceptre guy but if i was the pilot house in this thread would be what i was looking for thats really nice. It's always nice when you have one to look at complete before you start your own. If you can find the mold thats half the battle. I did one on my Sceptre and boy i wouldn't want to do that again. Good Luck

Re: pilot house ?
Just a thought, one you may already of had, you can buy pre laminated sheets of Nida-Core and other cores in 4x8 sheets as there are not too many curves in a dog house it should speed up the fabrication a bit. i bought my sheets from Composite One in Bristol RI.
Here is a nice one on one of my fishing buddy's Conch 27: http://www.classicseacraft.com/steve...edium/0006.jpg |

Re: pilot house ?
Trayder, we got to meet up some time. I saw you on the bank tuna fishing once or twice last year and did not realize that was you in the conch. A conch 27 would be my dream boat.....someday. I also think that you may fish with one of my cousins friends. Small world. Steve's 27 is pretty much how I want my 23' to look like minus the pul-pit. I was thinking of using the nida core or divinycell for the front and two sides. It's the top that is going to be tough. I want a slight curve to the top, I was told they don't look very well with a flat top. I plan on buying the window's from the same place that warthog and chance got theirs from.
John, don't worry about the pic, Brent has been really helpful and instrumental with helping me so far come up with ideas about my build. Oh yeah and one of the sickest Conch 27's ever is for sale. Only one ever built with a full keel. Re: pilot house ?
Pacific Pilothouse makes all kinds of cool looking models but they are expensive. Good for ideas if nothing else.

Re: pilot house ?
TunaMeltdown-
Well I have been to your house....not sure if you knew I was the one the bought your poon harpoon? yes, I think we have a few friends in common. As for the top its not that hard, honest, buy some formica and make a flat...errr... curved mold lay up a few layers of glass, put ply wood , or even aluminum plate where you will mount Radar, antennas, etc and then lay in your core, in pieces if your want to make it easier, then glass that to the top of your structure, make sense? |
Re: pilot house ?
Yeah, I had know idea that was you, sorry. Kind of funny, I had to sell that in order to come up with the down payment for the new SeaCraft and I am selling the T-top to Kevin Glynn who owns Offshore inovations and the Poon harpoons. He's buying it for a new harpoon and $700. It's a real small world. Anyhow my Uncle/cousin, Richie Stewart works at Pyne sand and stone and knows someone that you fish with.

I will be building the mold for my Pilot House this weekend. I should have it finished by Sunday. I post up pictures of the finished mold. If you like what you see you can borrow it once I'm done laying up the core and glass/epoxy. Heynow will get first dibs.

Re: pilot house ?
I am bringing this back to the top because my father and I finally had time to start the pilot house mold for our 23 footer this past weekend. It is going to be a 3 piece mold consisting of the house, top cap, and console. All I have left is the console configuration but I want to fit the mold in place on the boat before I start that process.

Re: pilot house ?
Bill Potter "SeaMark Marine" was making them for awhile. I bet there are still some around? Sizes were available for the 23' SeaCraft
Maybe Don @ Hermco can chime in here. I think he had a prototype at one time? Click Here Pilot House Link |
Re: pilot house ?
You'll see a Potter SeaMark Pilot Console on a 23 . . . very soon!! I'll post some before and after pics next weekend (March 20th).

looks good brother...looks good... i'm gonna do something real similar, next year...i asked the famous "mr don herman",for some ideas...don's the man,he's a flat out genius when it comes to fiberglass-and a blast to talk to as well... after i make the mods-i plan on making a mold from it...i'm gonna incorporate the console into the enclosure...i have a hard top mold i made a few years ago-gonna use that... all this is on the schedule for next season-the deck has a few soft areas-gonna pull the deck and do the pilot house installation at the same time... side note: these 23's are a great platform-i know i'm preaching to the choir here but,it makes sense,to run a rig like this.ease of operation, cost of operation-these just can't be beat - tuna meltdown's rig is an inboard-nice set up-real nice, big weight down low,low center of gravity-and cheap to run ! with the cost of fuel, even if it hits $5g,it's still a cheap day offshore on these rigs-split the fuel bill 3ways,and it's cheap-real cheap.these boats are gonna do anything the bigger boats are gonna do-granted,a little less "comfortable",but seriously, who needs a flat screen tv,and a surround sound system, when you're fishin' ? if diesel fuel hits $5g,some of those bigger rigs, the fuel bill for the day is gonna top $1,000 3 guys splitting that is getting expensive-figure running 2-3 days a week... sorry for the side track guys... |
Re: pilot house ?
I agree, a 23 is a great all around boat. A ton of big boat guys simply can not afford all that encompass' owning, running, traveling, maintaining, storing their boats the last few years tons of those big boat owners have downsized, corporate owned or personally owned. There is gonna be widespread downsizing in all classes of boats if the fuel gets crazy as predicted.

Pelican,
Nice to see someone jump into this. Can't wait to see it finished. If anyone would like to see one of these on a 23 . . . I'd be happy to show it. There are a LOT of nice things about this console. Head room inside the console with the step down is 70". Visibility through the console is just awesome. http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...bum216/2_G.jpg |
