23' inboard Restoration

Well I thought I should start a resto thread so here we go!! Since I purchased the boat off of ebay a month ago I have gutted her (deck's & transom & rails). When i purchased the boat the guy told me the boat was solid! I recieved the boat and found that the top rails where rotted to the core, then found a bunch of soft spots on the deck. So then I was looking around and put my hand on the transom and found that it had delaminated from the shell and water came gooshing out!! I kinda thought to myself WTF either that guy didn't know a thing or he's just trying to pork someone! Well I put my chinup and moved on and started this project! When did THAT happen? Details please. Why that engine, are you doing jackshaft? If so what set up. What outdrive?

I think those TDI are the ones that do not smoke, smell bad, or loud noises (brick tamland), but do get respectable diesel efficiency. Best of both worlds. Except the "price" world?

Ok thanks. Boat looks great. Keep the pics coming.

I was just curious what kind of wood you are using for the transom?

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

i'm using corecell for the transom. the tdi i'm using because i got it for the right price and it is a straight shaft not a jack shaft straight inboard the motor is brand new

Duh. Sorry about the bone head jackshaft question regarding the title of the thread. Guess what I have been thinking about recently. Thanks, and keep it up.

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

That boat is too far gone to re-do, way too big of a project. Now where can I pick up that motor again?
Kidding aside that is going to be a sweet set up when you're done!

I am also planning a TDI V6 in my 23' Sceptre. Should be a fun project you have there. Let me know if you need anything VW related. Harness, Panels, misc, etc. :D

OKay, is a Nm = Newton Meter?? How does that translate in Ft/lbs?

ANSWER: 451Nm = 329 ft/lbs of Torque.

Also that Diesel turns up some high rpms. I quess so since it is auto motor right?

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

Direct inboard V drive. Original Borg Warner 1.5, but I may switch to a ZF63IV with the new engine.

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

I was wondering whats the best way to approach the existing deck drains they don't seem like they will work well what can i do or are they good? pics would help on any fixes?

heynow2203 02-14-2011 11:28 PM

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

Any help would be great I'm kinda lost when it comes to that the deck seems very close to the water line and i don't know if i should raise the deck and just put scuppers right through the side? anybody have any pics of what they did or is done?

Seacraft84 02-15-2011 07:36 AM

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

If it were me I would finish cutting out the deck leaving about a 2" lip around the outside. Raise your stringers. I redid a 23' outboard with a bracket and raised the floor a total of about three inches. My drains also went out the side. I found some scuppers with recessed flappers in them and put on the sides. They worked great and self bailed fine with 3-4 people and full gas. Of course in your situation you have no bracket to worry about, so your scuppers could go through the transom. Use some PVC and wrap glass around it, and go from the liner to the transom and put your drains out the back. You could also heat the PVC and make it oval and use that instead of round ones. I will get some pics up here of my 23'.

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

Here you go. Look at the last page at the bottom. You can see where the scuppers come out the side compared to the waterline.

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

I have both the thru hull drains as well as scuppers out the back on my inboard. The thru hull ones work well to drain when at the mooring but need to be plugged when running.

My scuppers that run out the stern sit right at the waterline. When the boat has full fuel tanks I can get some slight water come back through the scuppers.

I think changing it out to the "regulator style" (google it) thru hulls and some fiberglass oval tubes might be the way to go.

Looks good to me. What are your plans for the scuppers?

heynow2203 02-17-2011 09:39 AM

Re: 23' inboard Restoration

I'm going to run them out the stern and make some oval fiberglass tubes to do so. Just need to get the flappers in so I know what size tube to make!
