tranducer choice for 23 inboard
 

I am about to purchase a furuno 585 sounder/thru hull transducer. Can anyone help me choose the correct one? I am looking at the airmar 1kw tilted element. Do I purchase the 20 degree one even though it is going to be mounted near the keel(centerline)of boat?

If I remember right that one is pretty big bucks. I use a regular plastic/composit thru hull as a shoot thru the hull transducer. It works great down as deep as 1500 feet. I had issue with drilling a hole in the hull so I looked into shooting thru the hull.

can you elaborate as to what issue with drilling through the hull? Did you just not want a hole in the bottom of your boat or something else? Thanks.

I chose the Airmar tilted element with that same sounder and am very happy. You may ask Airmar about placement as mine is outboard power.

I have the exact same setup as Reelescape on my outboard- had major concerns about cutting hole in bottom but everything has worked out great- 585 is a nice unit and works great with Airmar tilted element.

I have the airmar tilted element installed in my inboard. Works great and holds bottom while running. It is installed on the port side just about amidships.

Everyone is correct on their call on the tilted element transducers. I've got the Airmar 20 degree and it works great. Had an issue with the cable from the original unit.....no questions asked by Airmar, period, they replaced the unit!!! Great customer service.
Form the "for it's worth department".....this is where you do not skimp on the purchase/install. If you are going to the effort and expense of drilling a hole in your hull to install the transducer spend the extra $$$$ and do it right. I've got the 1000w B164 and am very satisfied!!! Now that I have this unit, I will NEVER go back to a transom mount for any of my boats!!!!

I have the Airmar B744V Bronze triducer thru hull for my inboard with fairing block. I have an extra B744-V w/o fairing block if you need one.

Just didn't want to drill a hole in the boat. I have a piece of 4" PVC cut on an angle to be perp to the water. I used 5200 to attach it low in the bilge just in front of the engine. Fill it with non toxic anti freeze and hang the thru hull transducer in it. I watch the depth drop to 1500 feet cruising @ 20mph.

I used a Aimar on my 23 Inboard, didn't want to do the large hole in the bottom but has been in the water most of the time (4 years) and no problems.

i've installed quite a few of these-they're an excellent choice...
i'm really not sure what problems could arise with popping the hole in the hull for the 'ducer ?

it's a pretty straight forward operation-select location-smooth out any imperfections on the inside surface,cut a "back up" ring for the inside-i like and use starboard,correct size hole saw,and have at it...a little 3m 5200 adhesive/sealer on all surfaces...again,pretty straight forward operation...no real cause for concern...

Life is full of choices - mine was not to drill.
I've drilled a number of holes in as many boats all without problems. I didn't say either way was better than another - the question was asked and I answered.
