My 20ft Potter SF....

Previously put a couple of pics in the photo page but figured I would move it over here. I am pretty much neck deep with new foam core stringer, random repairs, and the new floor soon to be installed.
The boat was a nightmare after cutting into her with 3 floors stacked on top of one another and some other significant damage. I am going to make a template of the cap, cut down the shearline instead of rebuilding it, and trash the cap!
I believe she will be an open floor plan all the way through since I am working with a clean slate...no forward deck.
Everything new will be foam...no wood.
The guys working on her found an unopend bag of Lay's original, expiration 1984 under the floor!
An estimated 600+ pounds of wet wood and foam have been removed...hard to believe she ran over 40 kts with all that crap in the belly!
As i pull together some NEW pics I will post em up.
As I said before, I am not doing the work myself. The work is being done in Charleston.

Here are a few pics....the transom is in, the new floor height is set, and the floor will go in real soon!
For some reason I have never been able to load pics to the site...don't really know why cause no issues on any other!
Anyway, link to transom, stringers, and new switch panel by newwiremarine.com pics....NO WOOD!

Just click the .img code in the box by each picture on Photobucket then right click to paste on this page. Looking good. I like the switch panel.

You woulda thought it had you seen the junk that came out of her!
Being in the wood business myself, I would agree !

Here is the new leaning post from Nautical Designs....same as the pic minus the rocket launchers on the backrest. Has a 40 gallon oval under the lid!

Deff wanna see the finished product with that Nautical leaning post. Looking good so far

Calibogue 10-11-2011 07:01 AM

The new floor has been dry fitted and in two pieces. We decided to fill the pockets b/w stringers with foam and made channels and drains so water can escape if it ever finds its way beneath the foam.
The floor will go down in the next couple of days then up the sides!

Nice post / livewell what is that setting you back?

Calibogue 01-22-2012 07:50 PM

$2800 or thereabouts

Calibogue 02-20-2012 07:29 AM

Still creeping......vacuuming the interior sides into place!

strick 02-20-2012 10:17 AM

Nice work on the vacuum bagging. What material are you using for the sides? I see you filled the hull with foam. I would caution you about adding too much weight to the 20sf. Foam, a big leaning post live well, etc... it will add up quick.

strick

Calibogue 02-22-2012 10:08 PM

1/2" Nida core
Regarding the weight.....we removed SOOO much I find it hard to believe we will ever come close to adding that much back!
However, I hear you and understand your concern.
Forgot to add, the rigging tube was carved through the starboard side of the foam and glassed to make a smooth channel and soft corners.
The transom is two layers of 3/4" coosa-board laminated together and the floor is 1" divincil.

strick 02-23-2012 12:54 AM

She will be solid as a rock now that you have cored the sides. Thats one of the best things I did to my 20sf. I take it you are going to put a flotation bracket on the hull? I was just saying about the weight because as you know the 20 sf does not have that much freeboard as compared to the 20 MA. What are you going with for power? looks like you are not skimping on this project :)

strick

Calibogue 02-23-2012 07:50 AM

Strick, as I said before I am not doing the work myself yet paying a professional to take my ideas and make them reality. They listen to me and I listen to them and the result will be a new Potter that is done right!
I ran this boat for two years before starting this project and it had a bracket when I bought it. I will be putting the bracket back on after a little makeover as well as the 175 Opti that I hung when I bought her.

Caymanboy 02-23-2012 08:38 AM

Nice boat, nice job, I wuz wondering where that riggin wuz goin! Nice power for that rig, she oughta scoot. Keepa postin!!!!

Caymanboy 02-23-2012 08:48 AM

Not de-railing the thread, but here is a teaser Strick. She is actually a bit further along than this pic. :-)

Calibogue 02-23-2012 08:56 AM

She was running 42 KT's before we took all the crap out (3 water logged floors and foam)....oughta walk the dog!

Caymanboy 02-23-2012 09:07 AM

There was another restore done down here awhile back, the guy, I forget his moniker, did one bang-up job, he had that same power, went like a scalded cat.

Nice work Oly but when you gonna "man up" and make your own bracket :)

strick

Caymanboy 02-24-2012 07:07 AM

Ha Ha! Maybe one of these days I should, but for the time being, I have no problem maning up to the fact that someone (Hermco) can built it better, faster and cheaper.
Trust me, the rest of that boat is ALL custom.
Now that is a contradiction to a post in another thread where I said you could only get one of those three!!!

Ha Ha I dont remember that post.... but some things I do remember such as is how nice your 20's look when you are done with them. Your gonna love the bracket.

Calibogue 03-24-2013 11:36 AM

I've been busy and haven't been on the site in a while.
The 20 is moving along nicely and we hope to have her on the water in May-June.

Looking REAL nice!
That's some nice glass work, glad I am not paying to have that restore done.
What kinda power you gonna put on the back of that panel truck?? :-)

Calibogue 03-25-2013 07:18 AM

Wish I wasn't paying too!

Caymanboy 03-25-2013 09:06 AM

Sorry about that! I didn't realize that you where the payor, thought it was being done by someone for them selves in their shop. I reread the thread and saw there was a payor.
Ouch. Great looking work though.
May or June, they better get humpin! :-)

Calibogue 03-25-2013 02:12 PM

I don't like to see things done half-ass like so many others often do!
I chose to get it right on the first attempt so I have no issues in the future.
To each his own I guess and thanks for your concern regarding the finances of my SC.

Caymanboy 03-25-2013 03:05 PM

No, my apologies, no disrespect meant.
That is some beautiful work! Whomever is paying for it.

Calibogue 03-25-2013 03:41 PM

No worries, just sharing for the love of the ride!

flyingfrizzle 03-27-2013 01:06 PM

cap off sf 20

Do you still got the cap off the 20? I dont have one for mine and would like to buy yours is you still have it even if it is in bad shape. Great rebuild! This is real close to how I want to do my 1971 20 sf. What year is yours? must be pre 72 due to the quad stringers. Looking good, let me know about the cap if you can if not I might have to do what you have done. Thanks Mike

Calibogue 04-01-2013 05:27 AM

I will be glad to check but I believe it has been chopped!

Thanks! Maybe I will get lucky and it will be sitting around. Let me know if is available, if not that will be ok too. I wouldn't mind have a full custom cap like yours but man that's a lot of work.

Caymanboy 04-16-2013 07:02 AM

Any new pics to post?

billythekid 04-17-2013 09:28 PM

wow some impressive work, how many nida core panels have you gone through? the cap is all cored? did you flip it and glass underneath? I have seen a lot of glass work and done a lot myself and am jealous of your skills! are you using epoxy or poly vinyl?

Calibogue 04-26-2013 04:08 AM

Yes, everything is cored on this refit.
Once again, the only skills I add to the work is my vision of what I want as a finished product!
The only nidacore is under the gunwales.... The floor is divincil and the transom is coosaboard.
I wish I had time and knowledge to do this work myself as I am a hands on do it yourself kinda man.
I have too many projects as it is now and my hands are arthritic and the tendinitis in my forearms is horrific..... Not sure I woulda made it through if I had tried.
I am however ready to be done and anxious to hit the water.... The cobia have just arrived and tarpon will not be far behind.
I am told emphatically May but I will be happy with a early June completion.
More pics coming next week probably......
