Cape cod area info?
I am going up there for a few days with the kids and wanted to find out where to go and what to see? I have never been up there to the north east. We will have a few days in that area then will spend a few days in Boston. Any suggestion on where to stay and what to see would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Cape cod area info?
Will you have 4wd? If so , take the kids on a picnic on Sandy Neck.
Drive down 6 A to P town and back on rte 28. Lunch at the Chatham Bar`s Inn. Wood`s hole. In Boston, Old Ironsides will be fun for all. Lunch in Kenmore Square or Cambridge. I haven`t seen the new bridge yet. Low light photo op? Post pics. GFS |
Re: Cape cod area info?
Thanks a lot for the info guys
We will not have a 4x4 unfortantly. We will only have a few days in the cape area. I have been thinking about one of the islands but I was not sure if it would be worth it. We will basically have an after noon and the following day before we have to head to connecticut. I was hoping to maybe see some of the old nautical museums? Well anymore suggestions and places to eat and stay would be great! |

Old Ironsides is the USS Constitution. The actual 3 masted frigate that sunk how many British ships of the line? Oldest ship in our Navy. A floating museum. Chilingsworth in Brewster. Say hi to Nitzi. Rated top 40 in US. Bring checkbook! |
Re: Cape cod area info?
You did not mention what days you'll be on Cape COD. If you can be there on a Friday evening make sure you are in Chatham for their town Band Concert. There's nothing more Americana than sitting with a few 1000 people on blankets that were staked out at 8:00 AM, helium balloons strung one to the other reaching hundreds of feet into the air, a small town band on a bandstand playing classic American songs and virtually every person is either dancing or singing along. Believe me, it doesn't get any better than that!
Another thing you can do while in Chatham, if you are there earlier in the day, is take the family out to the outer beach Pleasant Bay and see the seals up on the sand sunning themselves. You'll also get a good tour of some of the treacherous waters surrounding the cape and having a greater appreciation for those who sailed them in the past. (Okay, I'm partial to Chatham. It is not as nice as it used to be-too many people, too much new money-but it certainly still invokes memories of times past.) Visiting the Constitution in Boston is a terrific idea. While your there, There is Faneuil hall and Quincy market-fun places both. If you would like to give me a call I would be happy to speak with you. I was born in Boston and have spent more than 50 years of my life in and around Boston. Phone number-978. 363. 5161. |
Re: Cape cod area info?
I wouldnt waste your time headed to the islands. If you want some nautical stuff and beaches. Head up to Ptown I think theres a musuem called the Widdah, about a wreckage that has been preserved and whats a trip to Cape without a little venture to Ptown. The national seashore in the eastham, wellfleet and truro will provide some great beaching that you can pay for the day parking vs a sticker. And then theres orleans and Chatham have their bandstand nights. Thats just my 2 cents though. Ole Ironsides in boston is a must see

Re: Cape cod area info?
If your going to be coming from Boston area, Check out Pilmoth plantation and the Canal. The national seashore in Eastham would be a great trip, but its a a hike for just a day trip. As is Ptown, the Widdah museum is right on the Pier and is pretty interesting. Personally I think you wouldn't be doing yourself justice just spending one day on cape. It is a pretty large area with a TON of things.

Re: Cape cod area info?
The Museum of Science is excellent!!!... and interactive for the squids. The Gardner museum is a little gem as well.
FH is a good lunch spot. Go to Beacon Hill, out to Cambridge and Hahhhvahhd Sq. Drive really aggressively or get run over. Almost impossible to get a ticket in metro area in daylight. :D Almost ;) Don`t miss Old Ironsides! Mystic Seaport in Ct. is a great nautical museum. Bring me the Citgo sign from the Monstah as payment for priceless intel! I`ll settle for a maple leaf and some birch bark. Cheers, GFS |

Re: Cape cod area info?

I heard there were 3,000 people at Bill Jones` funeral. Bill taught me how to hot patch inner tubes for my bike. Half the phone book with those two names. Ted Williams? I`m talking 1630, not 1930! Here is the manifest from the Arbella c. 1630. http://www.packrat-pro.com/ships/winthrop.htm Mom`s side. Page and Lawson. Lawsons were New Bedford Whalers. You see, the ocean IS my blood. Papa`s side. Nichols {misspelled} , and Saltonstall. Still a few of those folks on the Cape no? Don`t make me break out the Starks of Live Free Or Die fame! It was Breed`s Hill, NOT Bunker Hill! 1930, how quaint. Oh look, there goes the Easter Bunny. The Citgo sign is MINE,MINE,MINE!!! Our Apologies to the OP, GFS |
Re: Cape cod area info?
Now, now there GFS! We're talking deeds, not doweries! T. Williams batting average - High 300's. A few off the Golden Splinter probably hit that damn sign!!
(This is all in fun!)   |
Re: Cape cod area info?
I would imagine the dowager hunting continues to this day.
If I had that sign, I could make the podium at the Christmas boat parade. Is Ted still frozen? |
Re: Cape cod area info?
So make a snowman(you still remember how) and use a couple of ten pin bowling balls with a candlestick pin in the middle. You'll make the podium; either the one at the parade or the one at the police desk sargent's office! (or maybe even the defendant's desk at your trial)
Merry Christmas and good luck. :D :D :D :D |
Re: Cape cod area info?
Does a Hercules helicopter have the capability to carry the sign down here? I don`t bowl.
I have had a safe drivers endorsement since `92. It`s just an endorsement. GFS 2. Mutton 0. Yum! Mango and Papaya sauce.... GFS |

Re: Cape cod area info?
Sorry been away from the computer for a little while
The plan is spending next Friday and Saturday in falMouth mass And see what ever we can in those days. Then Sunday and Monday in Connecticut then Tuesday through Thursday in Boston. The Boston part is tentative. If there is better suggestions please let me know. I am just getting out of s Florida with the kids and hoping to see what we can. So it is pretty low key change of scenery. Kids are finished with school and need a break! So with that information please help with plans! Would love to see some museums, nautical stuff. Love to see the local stuff and some good food! I would also love to pick up that 27 foot center console that was for sale up there but I would more then likely have to live in it when I got home!! So some seacraft stuff would be cool! Since we are from south Florida that has no history, if we could see some historical things that would be very cool as well! Thanks everyone! |
Re: Cape cod area info?
Rbol, Lots of great advice here...If you make it to the Cape stop at one of the outer cape beaches in the National Seashore and walk thru the NS Visitor Center in Eastham, The seals in Chatham and their town Fish Pier are worth checking out...the fish pier has a nice viewing area to see commercial boats unload...and seals eating the discards.
Regarding S. Fla...Isn't Los Olas a historic district? And S. Fla has to be famous for suburban sprawl...nothing like the build out that happened the last 15 years down there... Enjoy your stay and welcome, Steve |

Falmouth: Bike trail to Woods Hole and visit Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute Lab tours, play with the fish etc. and spend some time through some of the very Quaint downtown. -A good 1/2 or more day. Take cameras! Possibly do some of the Mansions(The Breakers/Vanderbilts AMAZING) in Newport if driving to CT. Conneticut: Nuc. Submarine tour at New London, Acquarium at Mystic and Coast Guard Academy(sp?) Boston- Duck Tour (a must) Ex- Military amphibians(DUC's) guided tour of Boston ending with a ride into and on the Charles river! Old Ironsides- USS Constitution. North End for some Italian anything! Maybe a Red Sox game or at least vist Fenway Park and the (now infamous) Citgo sign. Take a stroll around Harvard Square in Cambridbridge and walk some of Harvard campus. Grab some sandwiches to go and get yourself over to the banks of Charles river and have an impromptu picnic! Just a couple of ideas! |
Re: Cape cod area info?
No worries,
We`ve been having fun in your absence. Big Lew has good ideas. Chillingsworth is an outstanding restaurant in Brewster. Mid Cape. Lumiere in Newton is making Michael a star. CALL NOW! The islands look just like the Cape, unless you are in a boat. Duck boats are after my time, but look like fun. Oh, and Smithers, bring me that infernal Citgo sign. |
Re: Cape cod area info?
He No-Can-Do! He has been told by secret decoder ring message that it is mine and if he violates his commitment to ME, he will die by all Gods Red Sox!

Re: Cape cod area info?

Hey, GFS;
Give it up! I was in town today and contracted Flatley & Co. to remove the sign and have it placed at Area 666! All who enter will pay with their souls. As I said, Give it UP! consider yourself WARNED! |

I cannot, even as a friend, have the slightest wind to delay the process of Zombification. Live And Let Die. Heck of a boat jump.

Re: Cape cod area info?
Ok, so you are offically renamed SandPaperMan. I feel like I am but a toothpick of what once stood as a mighty oak! Keep the damn sign. The annual cost of maintaining all that neon light will drive you and the rest of Florida to the poor house. Enjoy poverty!

Re: Cape cod area info?
We can do solar down here.
We love our ocean and all that it requires of our respect. It is not about who wins, but being there. I am not there, therefore I am jealous. Fishin` hard this weekend. Cheers, GFS |
Re: Cape cod area info?
Well we made it!
We ended up not even going to Boston We had such a good time we ended up coming back to cape cod for the last couple days. We still did not get to see everything we wanted! I did see a nice white 23cc with dog house at a house in Chatham. The whole trip could not have been nicer other then staying up there for the summer!! |
