Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
It's in the "hull ID", last two numbers. Should be in the top right corner of the hull. ALL the info you will need is on this site concerning this project boat.

Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
1978 is definately one of the Potter built years. Looks like a 20' CC (Master Angler model) an upgrade from the std CC model.

Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
Once you get it, if you do, You'll have to read through this at least 3 times and take notes. I don't think I'll get any FLAK if I say this is the single best thread for a 20 foot recon!
http://www.classicseacraft.com/forum...rt=&PHPSESSID= Stick likes to be stroked with a compliment once in a while, so be nice and let him know. There is also 3000 lifetimes of information on this site so, Welcome Aboard and knock yourself out! It is a blast from beginning to-----I don't know when it ends yet but I'll let you know if it ever does and I survive it. |
Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
Well I'm IN ! I pick up this clean 78 SeaCraft 20SF. The dude with the bare hull never returned my calls so lucky for me he didn't. My new to me 20SF has a 95' 150 Merc EFI XRi VHF and CD player with bimini top. Scored it for 5 and no soft spots on the floor. Have some plans for it but mainly i will just be enjoying it for now.
Some of the only pics I got right now. Will try to snap some more soon. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...7/d0f42987.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...7f8b0e17ae.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...5333c2183d.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...046a6e1534.jpg Could use some paint and other minor fixes/upgrades. BTW: the HIN on this boat has SED as the first 3 letter is that a correct potter hull I.D. ? The actual HIN tag seems to have fallen of not really there, is that an issue ? |
Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
Congrates,
I have been following your thread .I actually took a look at this one it was in WPB. Needs a little cosmetics touches but all in all a SOLID boat. You did good to stay away from the project in Big Pine. The Serial number was gone, the title was for a seacraft but there was no way of conecting the two. No serial # spooked me away. A few weeks ago I purchased an 89 Seacraft ( Tracker) you probally saw it during your quest. Solid, paint good (just needs a buff). I plan on installing a 2-stoke 200 suzuki I had on my old Formula 233 CC. |

Yes it does look like there is a HIN number there but it is very obscure not a complety clear number...... So being the first 3 letters are SED on my hin it says that its not a potter hull even though its a 78????? |
Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
Are the letters obscured and you're guessing at the "D", or are they clear and the rest is tough to make out? Post up the HIN as you read it and maybe we can help out.

SF model. #22 born Jan 1978.
|
Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
I'm guessing there was a clerical error on the title and it should be "SEC" not "SED".

Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
My other SeaCraft is a 1978, and the HIN starts with SEC. I'm sure yours did/does too. Some one, sometime got the "C" and the "D" mixed up on the title. It's a Potter built boat -- for sure!
|
Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
The paint is already in rough shape over the HIN so I'd strip it off to confirm. I'm willing to bet that D is really a C once the paint is gone. If that's the case, you'll probably need to take a pencil etching of the HIN to your DMV to have the title corrected. It may also require a visual inspection by them to verify.

Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
I guess when I go paint the hull next year I will worry about it then right now I just cant wait till Sunday and get out on the water with her.
Thinking about painting it when I do this color its called Dessert Sage metallic. Anyone ever seen a boat with this color ? http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...709913-640.jpg :) ....I got another question since this Merc was converted to pre mix. What type of oil do I or should I use for this ? |

Stick with name-brand oil. I strictly use Quicksilver (Mercury), Yamalube, Penzoil< or Bombardier branded 2-stroke oils in any 2-stroke motor. I'd add Amsoil to the list, but they don't market in Florida. (As of 2007, Quicksilver was mostly made by Conoco/Phillips or Ashland Oil to Merc specs. Yamalube made by Chevron/Texaco to Yamaha specs, and Bombardier made by Penzoil West, Amsoil or Gulf Oil) Of the actual oil manufacturers, only Penzoil and Amsoil make their own brand exceed the quality of what they make for anyone else. |
Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
If you say so. But Ive never had a problem with using any 2 stroke oil. Now if I have a choice Ill use name brand but I dont go out of my way for it.

Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
When you decarb, you find out how things are. I called the F.D. with a heads up the first time, and that was at the ski boat ramp. Big cloud. Wind blowin` a lee and 10 ft. vis.
I run Penzoil semi synthetic. Hardly any smoke on the de-carb this spring. I`m thinking of pulling the heads just to replace the old gaskets and check the cooling passages. There is a reason why they invented synthetic oil. We went to the moon. Heavy carbon can lead to pre-ignition and cooling is paramount as well. Harbor Freight makes an inexpensive infrared gun. I run about 147 idle and cruise. Lil` more when she gets hungry. Cheers, GFS |

Took her out today, but i didnt bring my camera so I was only able to snap a real crappy one from my phone.. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...7/996b85ac.jpg The Crew http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...7/96514aa4.jpg Ran real good, I was real impressed the way the 150 powered the boat up to speed with my parents and gf on board along with some food an and drinks in the ice chest. I really gotta add the gps/finder combo it's not kool running around with out it. I have another question I dont have a temp gauge and the fuel gauge dosent seem to read correctly. What options do I have to help remedy these issues ? |
Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
i would run two temp gauges one for each head and get a wema fuel sender for the tank. done deal.
i run penzoil in my black max. advance auto parts sometimes has special $20 dollars off $100 dollar purchase. i stock up on the penzoil premium plus oil at that time. |

Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
you can do 2 things. you can buy 2 gauges without senders and buy the factory senders. or you can buy 2 gauges with aftermarket senders and mount them on the heads. the sender may not be so easy, i dont know if you have access to the tank or original sender. if you do then you are good to go. if not maybe get a flowscan and keep track of your usage. since you are local to me i can help you out with this if you like.

The Flo-scan with fuel totalizer is a good investment. Not only will it accurately keep track of fuel use, it'll help you save gas - can determine most efficient rpm as well as optimum engine trim and trim tab settings. More expensive than Navman, Lowrance, etc., but their stuff is aerospace quality, with top-notch customer support. |

With a single gauge, 2 sensors and a switch, it would be real obvious if one head was running much different than the other if the needle moved when you switched sensors. If your impeller fails, the overheat horn will warn you of the problem quicker than a gauge will anyway. As an engineer, I love having lots of gauges, but I think the money for an extra temp gauge would be better spent on a water pressure gauge, which will tell you when your impeller needs changing! |

Re: Possibly New Owner Got A Question
proper water pressure in these mercs is important. mine runs at 11 psi at WOT. i plan on moving my volt meter and adding a second temp gauge. i do my water pump once a year just if it gets alot of hours or not. cheap piece of mind. since you have access to the sender just take it out and measure the tank depth and order from from wema and hook it up. problem solved for that.
denny i know that the switch option for the gauges is pretty simple but as you i like seeing alot of gauges and stuff moving too. :) |
