Want to upgrade my controls ???
So my 20sf currently has a 95 Merc VRi 150 efi i really want to upgrade the throttle control on it to a new more modern version. How can I find out or do any of you know which trottle control is compatable with my engine ?

Re: Want to upgrade my controls ???
IMHO, Yamaha makes the best controls out there. And they will work with that engine.

i have a merc one on my boat. i was going to buy a new one because this one looked horrible. i ended up on ebay with a new chrome cover for it and now its nice again. cheaper and easier.

Re: Want to upgrade my controls ???
Thank you! Hopefully you got a SeaCraft because of the ride! But they certainly have great classic lines.
You might have to change the cables, (go with the best) but I like the Yamaha 704 Premium control, you would still have the T/T switch in the handle which you could wire up to the Merc wires. |

So if I go with the Yam controls I just need to get the corresponding cable and splice in the T/T to the exsisting wiring correct ? I really want to know if this one works though. I think it looks so clean http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercu...item2a10bb8c67 |

Re: Want to upgrade my controls ???
That`s a good motah, but it has a gremlin. The oil pump gear is composite and they fail. Replace asap.
Decarb it and run good oil. Avoid e10 at all costs, GFS |
Re: Want to upgrade my controls ???
You would have to get 33C type cables and the Merc. adapter kit for the Yamaha control which is by far the best on the market.

This last assumption can be significant. I believe the ethanol is added at the distributor, so you're depending on a human that's not hung over or high on it, to add the right amount of gallons of moonshine to the tanker truck! After reading Fr. Frank's post on ethanol-related problems on his motor, I got one of these ethanol testers and check the ethanol content of the gas every time I refuel. Fr. Frank's mechanic said that even if you use a fuel preservative like Stabil or Startron, THEY DON'T WORK if ethanol level is over about 7%! I've never found more than about 6% at the stations I normally use, but given the cost of potential repairs, I figure the cost of the tester is a good investment! One other tip . . . water in the fuel is also bad news for fuel injectors, so make sure you have a good filter like a Racor with the plastic bowl with drain so you can check to see if you're getting water in the fuel! BRP has added a water separating filter and water sensor on the newer E-TEC's and I'm thinking about adding one of those kits to mine. I believe other engine makers have done the same to theirs also. Buying non-ethanol gas from a marina is no guarantee it won't have water in it! On my 700 mile circumnavigation trip last year, I burned non-ethanol gas the whole trip, but I checked the filter every time I refueled. I found water after refueling at Clewiston, St. James City, Gasparilla Marina, Sanibel, and Chokoloskee! From Flamingo on and back up the east coast, I found no more water. |
