Wood kids on their 1956 Alumacraft 9/9/11
I bought the kids a vintage 14 alumacraft this Summer. While the 78 Johnson 25 is getting worked on, we took the boat out with our 8hp Yammi. By the size of their smiles, I am pretty sure they will be having fun on it by themselves in the future...........

That should keep them away from the 18 for a couple of years. Well thought out plan there.
That should perfrom well with a 25. |
Re: Wood kids on their 1956 Alumacraft 9/9/11
Thanks guys.......I am starting to reap the rewards of getting them hooked on boating. They did think they would be taking the 18 out by themselves anytime, the 14 does serve as a bridge to the future. If I can buy an unmolested 23 Sceptre with a useable 250 in the future, I will be glad for them to use the 18 on their own.

Very nice. A buddy of mine wants to get his 14 year old son a 13' Whaler or something along that line. But he doesn't think he's mature enough yet. I guess he can be a bit of a knucklehead at times. LOL.

My dad bought my brother and I an old 12' Mirrocraft back in the early 80s and threw a new 4hp Evinrude on it. There is nothing cooler than being 12-14 and having your own boat to tool around in. Your kids will have a blast with it for sure.

Scott-Yea it was my dad who started me out cruising the Abacos at age 4, family had this same boat (1953 version) and I proceeded to sink it at the dock at age 10 when it had my brother's 20 hp Johnson on it :o. He went to University of Florida, so he deserved it :o Finally put a 1977 25 on it from D and D Marine in WPB around 81 and would take it off Jupiter inlet weekly in the Summers.

Re: Wood kids on their 1956 Alumacraft 9/9/11
That 25 looks huge on there! Every summer my parents would rent a cottage on Buzzards Bay and if you know the area, summer afternoons always include a strong SW of at least 15-20 and 2-3' seas. My friend and I decided to do some wave jumping one afternoon and had so much fun that it became a daily routine. After a week we had rattled so many rivets loose that the boat leaked like a sieve. My dad was so pissed because it didn't leak a drop before that. That same friend also let me use his 9.9 Chrysler off his Sears Gamefisher one day and with the additional speed I thought I was running a D-stock runabout! From that day forward I always wanted more power but Dad never agreed. Oh and that Gamefisher, you never sat directly on the seats with shorts on or else you had fiberglass splinters on your legs. Good times though.

Sounds cool Scott-Yea that sounds familiar for pushing the limits :DI once hit the Tequesta Dr. bridge in SE FL (glancing blow) at full throttle following a friends 13 Whaler too close :o.

Danny you mentioned a Sceptre - that one in NC I was looking at for Susans son but they are passing on a boat. It seems like a very good value, that 25 does look a bit big on there

Dixon-
Yea that Sceptre is priced well. I want one for the sole purpose of doing the Bahamas and Keys runs. The 25 will be great on that Alumacraft. Very strong motor! That was what I tooled around in as a kid. |
Re: Wood kids on their 1956 Alumacraft 9/9/11
Might just have been the big guy in the back that made it sit low

Zero deadrise is a good thing on this classic for weight. Flotation seats too

Don- pm's are deteled. Man, that was all my old stuff back to 2002 (phone#'s, ect.) Thanks. Was I on the watch list??
|
Yeah it hurt...
I had to delete over 1800 PM's, OUCH!!! Even a PM from Spidercrab, belive it or not.. See ya, Ken Now known as ╚© |
Watch list?? Not really....unless it was one of Spidercrab's inlaws with only two or three teeth keeping an eye on you....key the banjo music. The issue was you were not able to receive any PMs. It only took me about five minutes to clean up my mess. I'm not on the "A" list like you and NoBones!! Take care! :)
