23 SF Rebuild

I have started the rebuild of my 23 SF here are some of the pictures. I have purchased a new aluminum fuel tank from Sunshine Marine Tanks in Miami Fla. I have to say what a great company to do business with. When I picked up the tank I had made an error and while they were fixing the tabs for me I was givin a tour around their shop and explained the build process, during that time I was shown a tank design showing a vent line coming half way down the tank allowing the fill and vent lines to be next to each other. When I told her that is how my old tank was originally built but i decided to move the vent line to another location they told me I would have a problem while fueling the tank so they fixed the tank while I waited.

I painted the bilge area and painted the coal tar on the fuel tank today.

VCS,
I need to do the same job to my 1985 23 cc, and I'm trying to get an idea what it will cost me monetarily and otherwise. How much coin did the fuel tank set you back? Are you happy with the quality/would you recommend Sunshine Marine Tanks? I also noticed that you foamed the new tank back in. Some of the guys on this forum don't recommend doing that. I would like your view of foaming tanks in. My tank is foamed in and has some pitting, so after I remove the floor it will get a new tank. I appreciate the great pictures, it helps guys like me alot. Keep up the good work.

sunshine marine tanks is a great place to deal with. i just bought a tank from them for my 91 contender. they made an exact copy of the old one and coal tar epoxied it for practically nothing. mine is 135 gallons and it cost me about 900 i think. it would have been ready when they said but it got delayed due to rain and they do the epoxy coating outside so i had to wait for that. not their fault though. would use again if needed on my other boat.

I used Sunshine for my 23 also. It's tagged at 118 gal but is 3/16" aluminum. Very happy with pricing/quality/timeliness.

What kind of gun/tip/paint did you use for spraying the nonskid? That finish you have shown is exactly what I am looking for. Can you tell me more about the process? Do you spray over the nonskid with a final coat of paint?
Thanks,
Alex.

I used a non skid additive from Behr Premium no 970 they sell it in home depot. I mixed in 2 bags per 64 oz of gelcoat, I then rolled it on with a medium nap roller, I rolled 3 coats letting an hour between coats to get tacky. The final coat I rolled on the gelcoat without the non skid to seal the finish. I wound up spraying the gunnels with the final coat of gelcoat to give it a smoother finish. The gun I used is a HVLP gravity fed gun with a 2.5 tip designed to spray gelcoat. Also the non skid cost only about $5 per bag

Looks real good. I like the idea of a final coat on the non skid to seal it. Makes sense. I have seen a few boats around here that were re done only to have the texture get worn off in a few years. I never thought about it much till now. Another thing from CSC to file into the memory bank.

CaptMick 03-17-2012 09:15 AM

Oh yeah... Very jealous of how the console looks. Nice work.

fdheld34 03-23-2012 07:52 AM

Very nice job..I need to swing by and take a look at it one day after work....
Questions---
with the gelcoat you used duratec and then wetsanded? buffed with 3m?
I am going to try Behr nonskid too...great idea!
Thanks

With the gel coat I used a product called patch booster then wet sanded and finished with the 3M products. There is a company out of West Palm Beach called Glue Products the owner Charlie is a great guy and has taken the time to educate me with the products he sells. I purchased all my materials from him.

I spend a tad more money there, but you are correct. Great shop around the corner.

Good knowledge and helpful folks that make sure all your products are tight and right.

They can`t help me with my lack of matching skill, but they did try. And try.
