Sceptre transom rebuild

4 Attachment(s)
Started my transom job today. As i was cutting it out i realized that the guy that i had do it 4 years ago used pressure treated wood. What a "No No" that was. I was worried that the oil in the pressure treated did something to the laminate so i pulled both inner and outer out. Not my plan. He did not go all the way up either as you can see in the photos and all the top was completely rotten. I have three months to get this done cause i want to go back fishing.Try to get photos not used to the new method files are too large. What is the trick

DonV 01-09-2012 08:51 PM

Holy moly!!!! I'm impressed. I went as far as the inner skin when I replaced my transom. However I sorta wish I went as far as you did, THEN it would have forced me to call Hermco to go with one of his brackets on a solid transom.

GOOD LUCK!

Entourage 01-09-2012 09:45 PM

Yeah i wanted to go with solid transom with bracket but i would have had to change alot of my rigging. I wasn't even sure what i was going to run into, so it is all being replaced and going back to the same way it was.

Not all marine ply is compatable with Poly or Vinylester. Oil in the glue or treat is not a treat at all.

Ask here to avoid the road to nowhere. My compass is spinning. Is that a problem?

Cheers,
GFS

I remember seeing Mark Hoptner at Ocean Master using it in his transoms,

Entourage 01-10-2012 08:44 AM

Well i had a hell of a time digging it out, but the thing was that it did not adhere to the inner skin nor the outter it just came off too easy. I found this kind of odd because he used "SHEET ROCK SCREWS" to keep it tight to the inner skin. (Bonehead move) Be careful of fiberglass guys in Tiverton RI won't mention any names. Come on CSC learn from the people who have done it and "Do it yourself"

Don,
Thanks for posting the link. I guess the APA says it's ok to use PT plywood in a laminate if it's been re-dried. So, no Home Depot PT plywood.
Dave

Entourage 01-10-2012 04:21 PM

Hermco do you agree that the resin will be ok bonding to the wood that has the pt oil in it?

gofastsandman 01-10-2012 08:27 PM

Greenwood XL?

pelican 01-10-2012 09:53 PM

Indeed, that`s why I posted.
Hermco recently posted some very good info on the subject.

Love that Pilot house. Perfect for the Cape.

Cheers,

Transom cutout ready for glass this weekend

FishStretcher 01-19-2012 08:42 AM

Did you remove the inner and outer skins of the transom? It is hard for me to tell from the pictures.

Entourage 01-19-2012 10:04 AM

Yes I did but that wasn't the plan.

I got a couple questions:

How thick are your inner and outer laminates?

How much did you overlap the exterior laminate over the existing glass to tab it in?

Dave

Entourage 01-25-2012 10:17 PM

The inner is 4 layers of glass with braces, 2 layers of matt and 2 layers of 1708 biaxle. The outter i stopped counting after 6 layers, the outter has at least a 1/4 inch thinckness while the inner is about and 1/8 thick. I didn't have that much gap on the outter edge to work with but i think i made it up on the inside.

Blue_Heron 01-26-2012 07:08 AM

Sounds like you're good on the laminate thickness. The rule of thumb would be to go at least as thick as the original laminate inside and out.

You're probably ok on the lip, too. The usual recommendation when bonding new laminate to old is to grind a taper at the edge of the old glass at a 12/1 ratio to the thickness. So if your laminate is 1/4", the edge where you want to bond it would have a 3" taper ground on it. That gives you plenty of surface area for a secondary bond. But that recommendation assumes you're using polyester resin which doesn't make a great secondary bond.

The fact that you used epoxy resin will give you a stronger secondary bond and that works in your favor. Also, your plywood is bonded to both old and new laminates from the inside, so there shouldn't be much stress on the joint.

Dave

Entourage 01-26-2012 09:43 AM

Yeah I had about a 2 inch outter lip this is why I went a little heavier on the inside. Definately will make a larger outter lip next time. Thanks for info.

WildBill 02-17-2012 05:42 PM

Mike, Nice Job. What color is that? I know you say you re-gelcoated but is the blue a gelcoat or paint? Once I sanded the gator off my hull my original gelcoat hue looks real simular to your's.

Entourage 02-17-2012 05:58 PM

Yeah its a like a baby blue color. It is gelcoat not paint i had to pigment the white until i came up with it.

Entourage 02-17-2012 08:56 PM

Well the transom project is pretty much complete very happy with the results. I would like to thank everyone for the help and advice throughout this project. This was my first transom and this sight is a great place to head to after the stressful days. Again thanks CSC and everyone.
