well after i have finaly gotten past the how could this happen? im into the project. what i found was that the past owner either got ripped off himself or realy stuck it to me! so we begin. got the motor off and started cuting and digging. looks like some one replaced less than half the wood and added marine bondo.
only actual amount of good wood!

that peice on the ground was the only peice of would in the transom that had been replaced. the rest was like muddy clay and full of ants! still have to dig more out and start grinding. been getting home late so i hope to get more done this weekend.
That really sucks what/how it happened but look on the bright side in a month you will have a new transom and be at Elliott Key with a Corona and all will be good again.
I like the equipment used to remove the engine....LOL |
Thanks Jorge, we use what we have at our disposal! if this transom was made of a caterpiller engine i would be done. as its more like carpentry/bodyshop i guess i may be a little more delayed!
nice job with the crane. was looking around town to get one of those to help remove my inboard, ended up going with an older tow truck with a boom in the back, much shorter but still worked. im in the process of ripping out my transom as well, its a PIA. good luck
same to you. and when your ready to go back in with the engine if your close enough let me know, i can help drop it back in.
WOW!!! what a pain in the A$$ to get this rotton wood out! i will never wonder why this work is so expensive again. family obligations done finaly and ive been at it a couple hours today. the wood might have been bad in the middle but the glassed side deffinetly isnt going down without a fight. Lol on a good note i did pick up a stainless marine bracket this weekend at a good price. looking forward to getting past the tear down and on to the build.
A lot of people doing this job have used a electric chain saw to get most of it out
I got mine at home depot garden section |
well all the woods out and spent a while grinding! hopefully by this weekend if weather holds i will be back on the come back trail. Dang whats that itch!!

well spent the morning grinding and i just have a small bit of wood left where the stringers blocked the grinder, going to try a sharp chisle to get in their and clean it up.
Hugo, very nice job of cleaning up the transom mess!!!! Looks like your dog has had enough of your mess....he's exiting stage left! :) Looks like you're moving along quite well.
Good luck! |
ok guys so i sold the car and my wife immediatly found a bunch of stuff that just had to be done:/ so now im stuck doing this job on my own. my first question is where can i but foam for the transom core? i can get wood localy but if possible i would realy like to do it with foam. is the stuff home depot sells what i need? remeber i am a complete green horn at this so sorry if my question sounds dumb. i have been reading on layup and ways to install, but i just am not sure where i can get the correct foam localy or if im going to have to have it shipped in.
thanks. |
Nice clean job Hugo. Sent you a pm.
Ok , theirs a hook or curv at the top of the transom outer skin, do i leave it or grind it down some? is this curv normal. im noticing it now that im getting ready to go back together.
Alright hugo. Do you work for Kelly Tractor down south? I'm just curious. I work for Pantropic in West Palm Beach. I noticed the service crane in the pics.

i would sooner sell one of my kidneys... old school "box" nova - nothing's cooler than that ... |
they are a blast. this one was my third.

Good job, been there once don't want to do it again.I don't know how you southern boys do that work in the heat and humidity.I gotta hand it to you.
I did my transom and all the other stuff in new england weather and lots in the winter, and it still was miserable. Remember the line in the movie Jaws, when Quint says "I'll never put on a life jacket again"?, Well, that's what I say about Tyvek suits. Sorry to stray off topic, but Hot cars!,almost as much fun as a Seacraft,I miss my 62 409 SS,and my 55 Chevy with the tricked out 283,and six(yes six)Stromberg #97 2 barrell carbs.Getting that throttle linkage to work right was a challenge. Got pulled over by a cop for speeding,he made me open the hood, saw the six little chrome air cleaners and just shook his head, and said "you kids are nuts".He actually let me go with a verbal warning http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y7/...LWNZ7Eee_3.jpg |

been sick last two weeks and havent done much, had enough energy today i went outside and made my template and cut my two core peices out. then ran out of steam. hope i get over this crap soon....
i feel you about running out of steam. it is HOT outside today.
Oh yea! It was a cooker today. I spent the day grinding stress cracks out of a 22 shamrock and cleaned out a case of water. Sorry to hear you've been under the weather hugo. A couple guys at our shop have been out too, so that stuff's makin it's way around. Wish I lived a little closer, I'd come give you a hand with that boat of yours.
well i have seen several diffrent ways people lay up their glass work, some make the core first then install and cover and some layup in layers until done, any ideas which is better? or realy just a matter of what is easier? i can do either just wondered if it made a diffrence. i even saw one person make the core, cover it and then glue it in place and tab in the edges.
Hugo I would love to come by and see your work
I'm in Miami near the Falls so I think I'm close I know that someday I will also do the transom on mine and I would like to see all that's involved Sent you a PM with my contact info Jorge |
well a bit more grinding today and test fitting the wood core peices. have my glass cut out and my resin is in the fridge cooling out, tommorow after work god willing i will assemble the core and get a step closer to being back in the water.

one more step... wet out the wood and added 2 peices of 1.5 oz mat then wet them out and sandwiched and screwed together...... just not enough time after work to feel like i got much done...... maybe i can get it cleaned up tommorow and set in place to cure so i can glass this weekend. should i use mat or roven between the core and outer skin or just thicked resin to set it in like a putty?
back at it again...

well finaly was able to get the core set and filled in the sides and bottom. today i was able to get my wifes help and we glassed in the front side of the transom. two layes of medium mat with one layer heavy roven in the middle extending forward about 6 inches, lots of patches first over the fillets. and as my girls put it a penny (heads up for luck!). hope it dosent cause some reaction and mess me up! feeling good about the progress. more glass on the back to do then build the rear cap and floor. install the bracket and hang power! sounds easy enough :)
Looking Good and the wife helped!!
You need to teach some of us that trick |
yea shes a real trooper! but i just cant get her to grind fiberglass! Lol
