Can't wait to hear your report! I think you will find that the extra weight and power is a little too much, but I guarantee you'll be collecting bugs . . . smiling from ear to ear at WOT

jabyrnes1285 06-19-2012 07:04 PM

I'm hope the doesn't sit to low I stood back there with old engine and seemed OK but we will see I'll post pics tomorrow

The Black Max is a great motor for the 20 from a power/weight standpoint. Have you checked out Luisp305's threads like this one? http://www.classicseacraft.com/commu...ad.php?t=24110 Your 225 might not be quite as heavy as that 250 Yami but you could be in a similar situation. Should be a fun ride in flat water, but if you get into a short steep chop, you might wish you had less weight on the stern!

jabyrnes1285 06-20-2012 10:34 AM

i did read lupis and i was worried before i bought it about the weight. i stood on the bracket with my blackmax and im 230 lbs it did go down but not as bad as i thought it would. the opti is 100 lbs heavier than my blackmax. but i will be taking it out at about 130 to see how it runs on the boat i know im going to have to reprop it also. anyways if it is too much im sure i can trade or sell for something smaller. i got this motor 2007 225 opti for 4k installed.

luisp305 06-20-2012 11:43 PM

Hey buddy. I had that 250 Yamaha on mine and it was terrible! The boat was sitting too low in the water, motor weighed around 500 pounds. I installed a 130 Etec which weighs 390 and it makes all the difference in the world. That 100 extra pounds that the new motor weighs might be the difference in making that boat sit in the water because 100 pounds less on my boat took it right out the water. With that heavy motor in rough seas it will be pretty dangerous especially with a following sea. Also, I checked the weight of every outboard out there and noticed that Mercury are actually the heaviest. I tell you this from personal experience because I was going really fast but now this boat rides beautiful.

McGillicuddy 06-21-2012 01:10 AM

Definitely a good deal on the Opti. I'd sell it at a profit and find a lighter rig, or find a 23 to put it on. But hey, if not, then "open up the throttle, an let her eat!" It will sit funny. It will be fast. It will require moving everything but the driver forward to get her balanced right. It will be fast. It will sit funny, and you'll want to get the biggest baddest stern-lifting 19p prop, and trim-tabs (assuming you don't already have them). Don't forget to get some viddy of you doing X-Games tricks on some summer swells. Thrill seeker, baby! Enjoy! And wear a life preserver. Im guessing you'll hit close 57 mph if you can keep the pointy end down some and the motor is mounted high enough.

Thrill seeker:D

wattaway2 06-21-2012 12:09 PM

I had a 225 on my old 20 sf with out the t-top I had 65 mph ging across the gulf side of Tavenerr on the gps---HOLD ON!!!!!

I've got a 250 on mine and with the T-top it does 57ish and I have to back down. That is full of fuel (70 gallons) and 4 people on board.

RidgeRunner 06-21-2012 05:25 PM

Well? Watcha end up with?
I would post that I have a 30" setback bracket and a 250 Opti (same weight as the 225 Opti) and I am stern heavy, only on a 20' Wellcraft. I came over here looking for someone that has hung some additional bouyancy on the stern because of this very thing.. Found Hermco here. What a bracket.. Of course Big Shrimpin's bracket, Awesome. What a boat these Seacrafts are. I am a fan, sorry for the derail, weary from walking uphill in my 20 all the time. You may be able to compensate some by putting some additional weight in the nose. Irregardless, it will sit bow proud and look cool. If I could find a reliable/efficient 300 hp that weighed around 425lbs I would be happy, Temporarily...
Post up a pic so we can drool a little.

hugo 06-21-2012 06:17 PM

i love my 200XRI black max. 395 lbs and all the power you could want! im rebuilding the transom now and adding a 27 inch bracket, flotation style without the platform. cant wait to get it done and back on the water.

jabyrnes1285 06-22-2012 06:55 AM

Well been very wet here in port saint lucie. Will be trying to get out today I have pics of it in the drive way. Also waiting on my mirage plus prop 15.5 diameter 19 pitch. Not thinking my 14.25 diameter 17 pitch is enough prop

Bigshrimpin 06-22-2012 09:11 AM

You'll probably need a 21P . . if you have the 1.75 ratio gear case.

Deathfromabove 06-22-2012 04:13 PM

All I can say Is PROP it right and Make sure If you runn in alot of chop everything is strapped down. <airtime> Put a More weight in the bow and Burn through the chop and LAUGH YOUR BUTT OFF.

From my own experience from having a low transom and no bracket to a full transom with a bracket. I have gone Thru black maxx 200,honda 225 fourstroke, mercs 150,200,225 now a Suzuki 175 fourstroke. Favorite in speed and torque was the old black maxx. The 225 I could turn on a dime.

But all in all it will not feel like a true seacraft ride. But thats just my opinion.
But it will RIDE.. lol;) Suck some fuel too WOT. 3/4 throttle

Good luck

Personally Bigshrimpin and Mcgillicuddy HIt the nail on the head with their advice.
Local charter Captain Richie has a 135yammi and does 40knts stays dry from even weight distribution Most of the time.lol

You'll definitely need a 21. I'm running a 15 x 21 Mirage prop and am seeing anywhere from 5500-5800rpms

jabyrnes1285 06-25-2012 02:03 PM

so got it in the water did sit a little low thinking the 19p was too much prop. took to long to plane out but once it did it hauled. i didnt have any vent caps in the prop and i was only getting 5000 rpm all trimmed out. then it started bucking and my fuel bulb was empty. not sucked flat just empty. so needless to say didnt get a good test. back at shop getting back tomorrow hopefully

eggsuckindog 06-26-2012 01:45 AM

thats gotta swing a 19, now a Stilletto is very close to a Mirage in design just 14 1/4 vs 15 in dia - my guess is the motor is too low in general but it will take some set-up work with the bracket. I have no experience with brackets, now Ridge Runner who has popped in here would be an excellent source on setting up brackets - trust me his Wellcraft is bad ass looking strung out

Bigshrimpin 06-26-2012 10:58 AM

Jay - I could swing a 19P mirage plus 5800rpm on a 20MA with a old 1981 2.4L V225 with a Yamaha 8hp fourstoke and 75 gallons.

You definitely have some issues with that opti.

RidgeRunner 06-26-2012 12:12 PM

Thanks for the compliment ESD. I agree with Big Shrimping, it should find the rev limiter with a 19pitch and all trimmed out. With no vent plugs installed in the prop it should ventilate a little coming out of the hole. (ie. RPM should jump right from the first throttle input) Boat should leap up and go, look into the running condition of the Opti. The empty primer ball is telling you something.
On motor height- If you look aft when on plane and your motor is throwing up a bunch of water it is probably too low on the bracket. Mine was...When going from a 2.4L 200 to the 3.0L 250 I had to hang the motor two notches higher to get the cav plate to ride above the water on plane. You can verify by having someone else take the wheel and carefully crawl back there to have a look-see at where the water is running across the leading edge of the lower. You will get it sorted out.

jabyrnes1285 06-27-2012 07:31 AM

Still haven't got my boat back so I assume they must have found something. But to let you know my options was mounted to the highest setting. It did rev right up with the vent plugs removed. When it planed out it did go fast and was riding correctly and even just wasn't getting my full rpms. Will see. More when I here back from the boat shop

RidgeRunner 08-02-2012 12:55 PM

Any updates? That thing is gonna haul the mail when sorted out..
