Widow needs to know what to ask for a Seacraft
 

Her husband passed away before he could start on a 1976 20' Scepter project. It has a galvanized single axle trailer and a non working V6 on it. Hull is fine as far as she knows but the whole thing needs rigging and cleaning. What should she ask for it?

That's a tough call. So many variables to consider that can detract from price.
Non-functioning engine, project boat that is not finished, less popular layout than center consoles...
Best bet would be have some one look it over and give an unbiased opinion. Maybe one of the members here that is local can put an eyeball on it and throw out a price.
Or take pictures and e-bay it.
I know everyone wants the best for a widow, but it is truly only worth what the next owner will pay.

I appreciate the help. Occurs to me to say El Campo is an hour SW of Houston to save you guys the trouble of googling it.

Actually I better not. But, it looks real good. Boat has its fans. As Strick and Tiny know, the design grows on you. It's a kick ass bay boat and plenty capable outside. That Evinrude could be swapped out or for a running 115 hp and 2500-3000 is not out of the question. Lots of water from Corpus to Galveston Bay and you guys have shipping lanes as well as skinny water. Grouper, trout, redfish whatever... The Sceptre has a soccer field of a cockpit to fish from and I'm sure its a very nice ski boat if one is so inclined.

Without power but having a decent trailer and clean pinks, I'd ask at least 1500 - 2000. Evinrude could be a simple repair.

Sorry to hear of the widows loss and best of luck. I you see a 15' Seacraft Scampi down there, let me know.

I'd say Gillie is right on the number. Making $1500 the "target price" will probably sell the boat in a shorter time frame, but asking $2k also makes sense in giving room to negotiate. The issue to any potential buyer is whether the motor can be economically repaired.

For what the market is doing, I just last week purchased a '69 20' CC with a V6 200 Johnson and decent galvanized trailer for $800. It needs a fuel tank, steering, and wiring, but has a good deck and transom. Been in storage since 1998.

I think she would be delighted with 1500. On the other hand, I have a 77 Hewes Bonefisher I could pull a 115 Johnson off of, put it on the Seacraft and put a smaller newer motor on the Hewes. 115 is manual tilt but ran like a top last time I ran it. Ashamed to say that was a few years ago but in my defense I'm undertaking a deck off refurb on the Hewes. Kind of attached to that boat since I drove to Miami and picked it up new for my father in 77. What would the performance be on the Seacraft with a 115 and would the manual tilt kill the interest in the boat?

Putting the old Johnson on the Sceptre would be a good idea. I have a 1983 Merc 115 on a 20 Seafari and get 2.5mpg at 3500-4000 rpm cruise about 25mph. WOT 36 mph @ 2mpg.

The 115 Johnson would be a great match for the little Sceptre. Economy might be slightly better with the Johnson and a mph or 2 less top end.

I don't know about the manual trim issue. If someone is interested in the boat for what it is they'll worry about that later...Good luck.:cool:

I would just sell the hull and trailer...that motor is not going to add that much value...more than likely new owner will repower or raise transom to 25" or even close and add bracket anyways.

Depends how old your 115 is, but having the Sceptre powered is better either way. It will be more likely to sell now with a running motor. If your baby is the Hewes resto you'll likely be re-powering anyway. I don't think too many fellas in Matagorda Bay are looking for a summer project... too freakin hot.

If I were in your shoes I'd buy it from her it and keep it. Put your 115 on it and sell the 150 evi for parts or whatever. That way you have a nice runner while you restore w/ the Hewes. No stress in your rebuild time frame. You'll probably fall in love with the Sceptre. Nothin like having a classic flats boat next to a classic SeaCraft. ;)

Many like the thought of runnin` a boat. Not the time and love it takes to pull it off.

It's for sale, boat, motor and trailer, for $1500. If it doesn't sell, it goes in storage for sometime in the future when it's time for another project. If it sells, I'd rather it go to a Seacraft aficianado who will restore it. I'd recommend she take a lower price if one of you guys wanted it.
