Jet ski Impact

Left my boat at the dock over the 4th, left dock at 5:30 am on 5th to go fishing. When I pulled the boat out of the water later that afternoon, I found this...

You can see the hull flexed enough to pop out the vent hole plug. When I bought then hull, the previous guys had already plugged the vents, he just used a small mount of matt of the plug, so it was not in their every well. there is cracking on the inside as well, some fairing cracks and a little on one of the hullside stiffeners.

I think I will just make a temporary fix for now, then make the real fix and re-paint this winter.

jet ski impact

Sorry to see, I bet you want to impact someones head with a fist full of dumbass!!!

Thanks for evincing ; FG matt has its place but that's not it!!!!

Nice Cobia, bet it gave you a workout, especially if he was on or near that marker,
they are smart fish, they will almost always try to cut you off on a marker or structure.

Hey Brian. Thats why my shooting line was attached to the senator with 100 braid :)

I just got a chance to really check out the damage, its more extensive than I first thought. Stiffeners on inside are delaminated at the top, hull/cap is delaminted in a spot (I glass hull to cap from the underside). This was a pretty major impact. It just a boat, but I am pretty mad about the time its going to take me to fix it.

FWC is on the case and I have some leads on the perps.

Blue_Heron 07-06-2012 11:43 AM

Damn, Joel. That's got to be frustrating after all the work you put into it. Unfortunately, Jet skis are often operated by idiots. I hope you catch the A-hole that did it and can hold him accountable.
Dave

Amen brother Dave!!!!

The only thing we can hope is the "leads on the perps" the FWC has originated from the emergency room!

How do you know it was a jet ski? I can't think of anything that high up on a jet ski that would leave a mark like that. Not interested in defending jet skiers, just finding out who did it.

shine 07-09-2012 12:18 PM

impact was about 1' above water line, the hull flexing caused the vent patch to pop out. Its like when you squeeze one side of the Tupperware and the opposite side top pops off.

shine 07-11-2012 09:58 AM

Delamination of about 6" of the hull to side tabbing. Delamination of the top hull side stiffener. Delamination of about top 5" of fiberglass box frame.

No surprise the hull vent patch came out, it was not even glassed on the inside and just some matt on the front. The was work already done when I bought the hull. Would have been OK if not for this impact.

there is also some cracking of the fairing compound between the tow hull side stiffeners, but it does not appear to be very bad. My plan is to fix the delamination now, return the stiffness, then use the boat until winter when I can cosmetically make it look new again. Unfortunately, I am going to eventually need to re-paint the whole port side on the out side and a few section on the inside. :x

yesterday I ground out the delmainated glass, and then back up the stiffener and the frame so the new glass will have plenty of overlap to bite

Good news, the person who caused the damage has been identified and I will getting reimbursed for the cost to repair :) Im more happy to know that someone is being held responsible that anything

Forgot to update the vent hole fix..... Copied from my other thread.....

So now that I cant use the boat for while (motor was stolen :x ) its good time to get the jet ski damage fixed. I might sell the boat, but in any case I need to fix this now.

Beveled back the hole, filled with some epoxy putty before layering in a few layers of 6 oz cloth. Sand the cloth, add first pass of quick fair

some epoxy high build primer

More epoxy high build primer :D

It looks very fair, will not need a second pass of fairing. I got 4 coats of the primer on, so we have plenty to sand. The System Three High Build Primer takes a few days to dry. You have to let it cure before painting over it. Will sand and try to paint on Monday. Im going to try to paint just the two spots and blend it into the rest of the hull, might be able to avoid repainting the whole side.

martin 10-07-2012 10:04 PM

Hi shine you can try this for blending paint. No over spray when i did it.. Although it was fresh paint, it came out flawless..... Take some 2 " tape and stick one edge.. Them gently roll the other out .. Do not stick the other side just flare it out to you.. You can also stick it to some visqene to help with overspray.. Or mask off area then come back and apply the flare....i used this method on the bow of a 38 ocean... Had to reshoot cause of print through..

shine 10-10-2012 02:05 PM

Thanks for the tip Martin, it makes sense. I dont spray though :) just roll and tip.

sanded primer to 320, brushed on a couple thick coats of sterling today. Got some contaminates in the paint and there are some bad fish eyes. Not too concerned with them (or the sags) right now, just trying to build a base. Tomorrow I will sand the paint, and put two more coats on, but they will go out wider. My idea is to bring the next coats out further so there is more paint built up for when I try to wet sand and buff the transition out. If that does not work, then I will repaint the whole side. Trying to avoid all that :)

it looks better in the pictures than in person :)

Hey Shine, did it turn out to actually be a jet-ski that caused the damage? Regardless, sure am glad they ran him down.

shine 10-12-2012 09:58 AM

Yes, it was a seadoo to be specific  Driver was eventually found and got a fine and probation for leaving the scene of an accident.
