Honeymoon in the keys
I thought you guys down south might be able to help me out. I will be getting married in the beginning of october and am looking for the dos and don'ts of the keys. We are also wondering what we must see while we are down there. We aren't loaded but I think we wil be getting a few bucks toward the honeymoon. Plan is to drive from Miami possibly drive straight to key west. We were planning on staying there the whole time unless we found something that caught our eye on the ride down. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Adam

OK, Adam as long as you are marrying Eve and not another Adam..
If you are with Eve, the middle Keys are a great place to kick back and relax.. If it is Adam, Key West all the way.. You will have lots of company! The best places to eat and stay IMO are the middle keys and Islamorada! As a matter of fact get with YeA 20sf, he just became the manager at the Sands in Islamorada...:) Hopefully you will bring your boat! Your buds will be able to tie the cans to the trailer. Key West makes a great day trip. It all depends if you want adventure or laid back.. Congratulations on your up coming marriage! |
Go to Morada Bay (Islamorada) you'll get some brownie points
|
there is a restaurant called the square grouper on the way to key west. its around mile marker 30 something, i think cudjoe key. its fantastic

Something about Welly Boots and the end of a dock. I think the Pooh Bahhh hat has gone to his head. Key Deer only live on Big Pine. Go early or late. Pretty neat. Cheers, GFS |
Thanks guys keep them coming. I'm from cape cod and up here we say Adam and Steve. But she is definitely an eve. We heard about the Waldorf in key west it was on groupon. She is a coupon queen. That was the plan we also heard cheeca in I believe islamorada was nice ill have to check out the sands as well I'll shoot him a pm. Nothing set in stone as of yet. Thanks again Adam
I would do anything to get the boat down there but the cost would be prohibitive. |
No_Bones is correct, KW is a great day trip...maybe an overnighter. On the way down you have to hit the No Name Pub in Big Pine, besides the cool place it is, the pizza is outa this world! Then take and draw a circle from the Sands of islamorada in a 10 mile radius and that's where you need to stay and enjoy the Keys. Jorge is correct about Morada Bay, especially the full moon party, next one is scheduled for Aug. 31st. Good luck!

If only the folks in Bahhhnstable had such good intel...
Get on a snorkle boat and go to Looooooe Key. YUM. You will be ruined for life. Welcome to Floriduh, Nothing here, please move along, GFS |
Lazy Days next to Bud and Mary's Marina has a great fish sandwich and a great view.
I've been to the No Name place and ordered the fried grouper and it sucked the pizza was good |
Ok, Good deal Adam....
In today's times you have to be politically correct and make everybody happy.. If you are on a budget the Cheeca Lodge is $$$$ per night. Although a really nice place. The Ragged Edge Resort has a honeymoon suite that is very clean, safe and secure.. They are great people! (MM 86.5) You have the artist village on US-1 about MM 85 World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada is a good stop.. Mangrove Mike's is a good breakfast and lunch place. The Old Tavenier is a great restaurant, but the hostess is a bit$# Snappers Restaurant next to 65bowrider house is also a good place They have 4 rooms above the restaurant, The boom boom room would be good for you! MM 96.5 I have not been to Marker 88 in quite sometime but was real good in the past. The chef from Marker 88 runs the Lazy Daze next to The Hampton and Bud & Mary's Robbie's, to feed the Tarpon is a hoot!! MM 77 Looe Key is a must at the Pennekamp State Park MM 102.5 Key West at most is an overnighter... Sunset at Mallory Square to watch the freak show!! Cookie Lady, sword swallower, tight rope walker, etc. etc. Watch out for pick pockets!! The usual Duval Street up and down.. Kino's Sandal shop, Eve would enjoy.. Just have fun!! |
Fried grouper?? really? You mean they serve normal food? All I know about is the nachos and the "Royal Pub Special" pizza....oh yeah almost forgot, the beer, I've never looked at the real menu. :)
|
Square grouper mm 22.5 is worth the stop
X2 Robbie's For Mexican food in key west salsa loca say hi to Bernice for me Dante's in key west nice pool bar restaurant If you can swing it go to the dry tortugas |
Almost forgot breakfast at the stuffed pig 3520 Overseas Highway, Marathon, FL

Since you're on a tight budget, also look into flying in/out of Ft Lauderdale. I've found the greater availability of flights from Boston or Prividence and the cheaper rates outweigh the additional 30 minutes of drive time beyond Miami. |
Thanks guys I had no idea the middle keys were so much better than Key West. I always hear everyone talking key west and really thought that was the place to be. Now that we have been schooled we will be altering the trip a bit. Thanks again. I will be keeping an eye on this for more great ideas.

Wow thanks for all this info guys it will help and neebie like me to the area as well LoL.. Hemicj8 I responed to your PM

Once in awhile us old farts are right-on...:);) Take advantage of the local knowledge... I have been going to the Keys my whole life from Daytona... Over that period of time I try not to make the same mistake twice! All of us here just want you to enjoy and have a great honeymoon!! Just be careful and not let us know where you will be.... Your honeymoon will end up being a CSC gathering!! :o We love any excuse for that to happen. :p |
"Once in awhile us old farts are right-on..."
Amen brother Ken!!! |
Having lived in Key West for awhile and seeing your wife suggested or has seen the Waldorf as an option I think you are going to be somewhat disappointed with the middle keys accommodations.
There is much more to Key West than Mallory square and Duval street Restaurants are exceptional Michaels Cafe Sole Prime 951 Antonia's Seven Fish Cafe Marquesa Etc All within walking disance of old town Key West There are bike tours trolley tours walking tours aquariums butterfly exhibits shipwreck museums shopping and beaches in Key West (albeit imported from the Bahamas) The middle keys are great but you won't find accommodation that compare to the Waldorf nor will you be able to do anything with out driving around. |
I totally agree with Trayder on KW..a ton of things to do and all of which you can walk or bike to, very convienent, and like he mentioned there is great food and most of it off of Duval where the local people go. I have taken many a trips with a woman in tow, and if we dont go to KW they are usually bitchin'...the middle keys are great but KW is hard to beat
|
Thanks to you guys also I think we are going to split the trip up and hit both equally. We want some alone time and unfortunately she doesn't like to snorkel. I just wish I could afford to get the boat down there and then leave at hermco for a bracket and to close my transom. I guess that will be my winter no budget project. I just found a used bracket and am thinking about ordering up some materials. Thanks again for the kw info. My thought is middle keys relax together hit kw mid week and if it gets too busy we will go back to islamorada.
|
Sounds great!! I'm assuming your much younger than me, or especially No_Bones :) and blowing it out for a few days in KW on your honeymoon sounds like fun. Jason is right, after you do the "Duval Crawl" move out a ways from Old Town and there are some great places to eat and visit!! Be careful of some of the, shall we say "alternative lifstyle" places in KW, you may see some rather strange people doing some rather strange things.

Your honeymoon may be just in time for Fantasy Fest 2012 !!
http://www.motorcyclemonster.com/fantasy-fest.html Check out the wedding pic at the bottom of the above link.. Thats why it's called Key Weird.. The "Key West Wreckers" will surely be there! No matter what you decide the all of the keys has something for everyone! Just do them all... |
My wife and I went to KW for our HM in 99. We stayed in Key Colony Beach / Marathon and boated, dined, etc. My wife likes to snorkle though. Some people may get bored and need to go to KW.
We took a day trip to KW, it was Fantasy Fest 1999, and a blast! |
I can't thank you enough we are down here and have been sightseeing and checking out the local spots. Having a blast. There are some killer deals on boats down here. I wish I had my truck and some $ to drag one back. Thanks again Adam
