Looking for a Garmin?

If anyone is looking to buy a Garmin 441s or 541s hang on, West Marine has them coming on sale Nov.13th. As always, "story of my life", I just bought a 441s for what I thought was a good price of $439 and they are on sale for $349 in the new WM flyer. Jeeez......

Take it back with the packaging and return it. Then repurchase it. when I worked for them, a customer could do it. They are very senstive to the customer's reasonable wishes. If the store you bought it at refuses, say OK and go to another store. Once you get the deal done, go back to the original store and ask for the manager; he will be wearing a name badge with title. Take it down and ask him why you shouldn't send a letter to the director of Customer Relations with a copy to the West Marine CEO.

If you're successful, you should get a "token" of his appreciation.

As luck would have it, I bought it off the web from Amazon. I never thought WM or anyone would knock off $180 off their normal price. Heck, they are selling the much, much nicer 740s for $1099 which is $400 off their regular price.

Oh well........maybe I'll buy a spare. :)

West Marine will be selling the 740s for that price on the 13th, or somewhere else now? That's my dream combo unit and I've been watching around for a while. Haven't seen anything close to that price and would probably jump fast!

Yes Sir November 13 - 26, however as expected "transducer sold separately". If you aleady have a Garmin unit with transducer it will probably work. My old, already installed transducer used on my original B&W unit and then my 178c worked perfectly on the new 441s. Good luck.

I think some of the newer ones have different pin numbers like my 550c on the little boat. They should have an adapter cable anyway.

No transducer yet for this boat but I have to buy it anyway. Actually might end up using the 740s for radar, GPS and engine monitoring and buy a Furuno fishfinder down the road with a 1000 watt duecer. The 740s should be plenty good to get my by for a while. I really like having the finder separate but the screen is big enough to have nav on split screen.

This is great, thanks!

Check Garmin's web site for lowered suggested retail prices on products due to new product announcements. A lot of places have these on "sale" at a higher price than the new suggested retail prices which appear to have been changed on the Garmin web site on 11/12 or 11/13.

The new replacement for the 740s is the Garmin 741sx. Has the new "chirp" technology.

It's only money......

Did anyone see the review where the guy said the mounting instructions required it to be no closer than 32" to a compass for the 740s??? Any issues by guys using them inside of 32"?

jorgeinmiami 11-30-2012 09:50 AM

If the 32" werea problem I think that would eliminate most CC boats

The 740 is the one I would like but I would have to mount it next to tha anchor locker with the 32 " req

That's what I thought too, so I wanted to know if there were any issues with the guys that have them on CCs. I thought a few people bought them when they went on sale in November.

Do a Google search on "740s compass" and you will find plenty of discussions on the subject. Most say it is the magnetic door where the SD card goes which can interfere with the compass though it could be electromechanical (electromagnetic?) interference from the screen or somewhere else in the Garmin. I remember one of my VHF radio instructions said the same thing. They are probably just trying to cover themselves from liability due to inaccurate compass readings. Just move the unit around with it on when you are mounting it and see if the compass reading changes. Most seem to say it is not an issue. Garmin usually answers the phone from my experience and is very helpful so you could call and ask.

My 640 is a little smaller but it has an internal antenna and is mounted within about 6" of my compass. It doesn't seem to cause any problems with the compass.
