Open transom cover.
Thought some of you guys with older Seacrafts with open transoms might be interested in this cover I made.
I have been working on the engine cover for my 1988 25' Sea Vee. As you can see, open transom which allows water to splash in while drifting or backing up offshore. Decided to go with a two piece cover. The bottom piece will be attached to the boat with screws and the top part will hinge on the bottom piece. Started by making a female mold for the bottom piece from scrap plywood I had laying around. Used some leftover body filler to make the radius. I will shoot it with primer and auto paint next week then wax it and make the part. The recessed area will allow the motors to be tilted almost all the way up for transport or whatever. I left enough of space under the bottom for your feet or to allow for cleaning etc... http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-53-31-648.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-13-53-559.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-14-58-671.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-36-39-663.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-16-35-388.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-48-07-795.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-51-40-743.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...-07-56-522.jpg http://www.thehulltruth.com/members/...6-08-11-42.jpg |
That looks cherry. Nice work!

Looks great!!
But, do the motors tilt?? |
Very nice! I'm always impressed with high quality custom fiberglass work. A lot of guys with 20' SeaCrafts and later 23's would benefit from this type of design.
|
VERY nice work! Will the top piece you mentioned will bring it to the full height of the transom?
|
The motors will not tilt up all the way, but they will come within a couple inches of full tilt which is fine for towing, etc... If I get a new tie rod that is not offset then they will go all the way up.
|
The top piece will go all the way over the motors like on a 27 conch. It will have a bait prep station on top, and reduce the engine noise significantly. I might put a rod holder or two on it as well. It will be removable for trailering or maintenance.
|
I am also going to upgrade to the extreme model shift cables (tighter allowable bend radius 4" instead of 8"), and redo the rigging tubes so that they aren't in the way.
|
Nice glass work...and those rare Merc 500hps must fly! What type of hinges are you planning for the upper section?

Nice work. It takes a pretty mold to make a pretty part.

Thanks for all the compliments! I am planning on using those rubber t handle things like on a jeep hood. It won't have hinges just a lip that fits over the lower half.
Something like this http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/search.shtml?gclid=CIaGmJGj1rQCFQ45nAodOm0ACQ&sear chQuery=T+Handle+Latches&op=search&Ntt=T+Handle+La tches&N=0&GlobalSearch=true&sst=subset&cm_mmc=PPC: %20Google%20Main%204-_-Hardware>Supplies-_-Latches>T%20Handle%20Latches>Broad-_-T%20Handle%20Latches&ef_id=UOrAnwAASERjhUYo:201301 07124454:s |
Very nice. Did you put some scuppers in our does it drain to the ckpit scuppers?
|
I am going to put a single scupper (well actually more of a drain tube) in the middle between the two motors. I would like to have one on each side, but there just isn't room with the twins in the way.
The 500 stickers were installed by the redneck (his word not mine) that I bought the motors from. They are coming off soon and reproduction factory stickers going on. |
Finally mounted the engine cover
Finally got the cover mounted
