Winter projects - doghouse and leaning post

So the only thing that really gets me thru winter are a few solid ski trips, working endless hours (tax season), dreaming about summer and hammering away at boat projects on Sundays. Here's whats happening:

Still hacking away at building a custom fiberglass leaning post. Backrest and cushion by Birdsall Marine. Installing 2 storage drawers in back, and the rest of the back will be open to house a 35 gallon livewell. Still need to fair, prime and paint.

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps88daf972.jpg

Debated building a scratch doghouse, but realized work like that is best left to pros and brave/skilled craftsmen on this forum. My time is best used elsewhere, so I reached out to Erik Kent, who built me this aluminum beauty.

Can't wait to get everything done and get out there. Cheers guys.

Great house. What's the width and weight? If I keep my Sceptre it will become a Savage with dog house as well. Keep the pics coming and thanks.

Bryan A. 02-08-2013 09:06 AM

Very nice!!!

Love the aluminum. What will you coat it with??

McGillicuddy 02-08-2013 03:25 PM

There's something fishy about this boat:cool:
Very nice. Looks like Mr Kent has some refined talents. Keep them pics coming. Nice proportions. It looks much lighter than frp houses. Any idea what it weighed?
Powder-coated?

Power plans?

Oh yeah --NICE garage!

zendora 02-08-2013 04:00 PM

Not sure of exact weight and dimensions, but I'll post when I have them. Boat is a straight inboard powered by 310hp PCM. The engine sits under the doghouse. Kent Fab also built an aluminum subframe around the engine well with a heavy duty hinge on the forward edge. The entire house tilts forward to allow engine access. It sits against a flange on the subfloor frame but all contact points are starboard (no metal on metal). There are 2 heavy duty dogs on the inside aft corners to fasten it in place. When we were planning this the goals were A) bulletproof, B) functional, C) purdy, in that order. Yes - it is powder coated.

McGill - Mr. Kent is infinitely talented - I highly recommend him. That's his garage (I wish it was mine!). I think you're right, the weight will come in a bit lower than a typical cored doghouse.

Blackfin - the Savage is a great layout - you'll love it.

Regrettably I won't have any progress or pics to share for a couple weeks, but I will post when I do.

zendora 02-11-2013 08:19 PM

Here is a pic of the subframe before it was powdercoated. I also had him cut it into 2 separate pieces in case I ever need to remove the aft deck plate.

Here's one of the dash of the new dog house with my electronics box dry fit in place. Starting to re-rig everything next week.

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps147eed53.jpg

zendora 05-06-2013 01:08 PM

Managed to make a little progress on the electronics box, gauge panel and a panel to mount the wiring bus, fuse panel, etc. Somehow we failed to add mounting flanges for the wiring panel so I had to 5200 some mahogany boards to the forward underside of the house, then mount a starboard panel to those.

Gauge Panel:

Electronics Box:

Everything is pretty much in place. A few more days of wiring/rigging/testing and we'll be ready for battle.

AHHHHHHHH!!!!

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps203f1f05.jpg

Not pretty at the moment, but it will be by the weekend and more importantly, everything is working! Very good feeling to see lights, pumps, gauges and electronics come on and hear the starter click over.

zendora 10-18-2013 12:47 PM

It's been a great season with the "new" version of this boat. Like a lot of guys on here, my boat's had a long successful life, and I hope she lasts another 30+ years in her new form. Also like a lot of guys up here, it was a frustrating year for tuna, but we had a few solid days and nights bass fishing and it was great to get out to Stellwagen a handful of times and the Sword with confidence. Fished a few ugly days offshore and got everything I expected out of the boat. Got down the cape and over to OB a couple times, had a bunch of fun sand bar and raft up days with the wife and friends, and really got everything I'd hoped out of the season... except a tuna! Hoping to get out a couple more times and chase some bass before putting her away for the long winter. Hope everyone enjoyed/is enjoying their boating season as much as I have. Cheers guys.

Wow looks amazing!!

Iseaboats 02-15-2014 12:25 PM

Wow,

That really looks great , Was your boat a center to begin with or did it have a windshield at some point ?

heynow2203 03-05-2014 09:45 AM

that is factory they made a few like this

Tugboat2 03-05-2014 10:54 AM

It would be awesome if you could post the dimensions for the doghouse. I'll be building one soon for my formula 233 project. Won't be as Gucci as aluminum but yours is the exact look i had in my head

Deathfromabove 03-30-2014 02:57 PM

:) n
Nice!!

zendora 04-23-2014 07:58 AM

Iseaboats, it came out of the factory like that in 1978. It's called a Savage, and as I understand it, it's the liner and cap from the Sceptre with no windshield and a center console. According to the production list it's one of 16 built with a straight inboard.

Tugboat, I'll post dimensions in the next few days.

Boat is currently undergoing some additional minor surgery - insulating the in-deck fish box, removing the glove boxes from the top of the cabin, sanding and 2-parting teak trim, and planning on pulling up the aft deck this weekend, checking some wiring, replacing senders and re-rigging livewell drain. Will post pics.

zendora 04-25-2014 10:06 PM

Ongoing..

Progress on this year's projects:

Removed glove boxes - 36 year old plywood was in good shape

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...pscf5279a4.jpg

Layer of woven and first round of fairing - also removed part of hand rail and sanded teak trim. Foil was to help curing process, had to keep halogen light on for a while because the weather up here has sucked a you know what. Cabin hatch I made last year from 1/2" fiberglass board, painted with Interlux Perfection. Applying non skid to it once the other surfaces are ready for finish coat.

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps657a3195.jpg

Insulating fish box - cut and dry fit closed cell foam panels

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps295544a6.jpg

Partially glassed in - hole allows access to water pump, will cover with access hatch. Sanded about a 3" piece of the bottom/aft foam piece to assist drainage - will install through hull to macerator pump.

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...psf629e0d9.jpg

Tomorrow's plan - fair and prime, finish glassing fish box, hopefully some other stuff. Will post pics and dimensions of doghouse for those who asked.

Mike

zendora 04-30-2014 04:51 PM

Doghouse dimensions

For those who asked, here are the dimensions of my doghouse:

Footprint: 48" fore to aft, 40" wide
Height: 86" from deck to edge of lid, slightly higher in middle due to camber

Aft angle starts 34" from deck (tape just shows angle, numbers irrelevant):
http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps693ce6b2.jpg

Forward angle starts 52" from deck (tape just shows angle, numbers irrelevant):
http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps68ab2645.jpg

I did not measure angles, but you can estimate from the pics. The forward windshield angle is slightly greater than the aft angle. Also, the lower part of the forward bulkhead is angled slightly aft to serve as a more comfortable backrest.

Forward seat is is 20" off the deck, 48" wide and 14" deep:
http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5b2a6813.jpg

Dash is roughly 38" wide has 3 angles. Lower dash (storage, gauge panel, wheel, tabs and shifters) has maybe a 30 degree pitch and is roughly 18.5" x 38". Middle part (electronics box) is steeper, maybe 70 degrees and is about 12" x 38". Top (compass) is nearly flat and is about 7" deep x 38". Tubes in corners are wire runs:
http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps69ce3344.jpg

The side windows follow the fore and aft angles of the house and are about 30" tall. Front window is 30" tall x 31" wide.

Lid is 60" wide by 88". Underside has starboard liner and wire runs for antennae and lights:

Feel free to ask if anyone wants any further info/measurements.

Just about 50 degrees under the wrap this morning, so hopefully the paint cures properly.

Mike

CHANCE1234 04-30-2014 06:27 PM

I used the exact primer the last few weeks in temps just under 50 and it cures just fine and pretty quick too. Are you using perfection for the top coat?

zendora 04-30-2014 09:28 PM

Chance, thanks, it cured fine, put a second coat on tonight. Yep Perfection in Oyster White. I painted my leaning post with it last year with good results.

Does anyone know if I can use Interlux Bilgekote over epoxy/glass? Or does it need to be primed first? Any alternatives? Looking for something quick and easy for the inside of the fish box I just insulated.

Boatboy6 04-30-2014 09:42 PM

Going to look sweet without those boxes. They look so out of place on the savage

flyingfrizzle 04-30-2014 10:47 PM

I like interlux products but the Bilgekote is a one part paint that will flake after a few years. I mention using it once and many stepped in to change my mind. Some say use gel coat with a additive for bilge applications and others say coat it with epoxy resin. In mine I coated it with left over epoxy resin then 2000e epoxy primer then sealed it off with a 2 part epoxy paint. I think either will last longer than the bilgekote. It is a good chemical, gas restant paint but lacks the strength of 2 part product. I wish interlux would come out with a 2 part epoxy base coating that was designed for those conditions.

CHANCE1234 05-01-2014 05:50 AM

Looks great. I'm using interlux perfection as well and so far I like it. This weekend is my last hurdle. Two coats of Snow White on the inside bulkheads than I'm done for this year. Gotta go fishin!

zendora 05-01-2014 10:46 AM

Thanks guys. Agreed, those boxes just didn't look right. The hand rails were a bit out of place too, so those are history. If anyone can use a roughly 8' length of stainless rail - about 6.5' + another ~18" at a ~45* bend - let me know. One is free to a good home, the other will become a center rigger.

Frizzle, thanks, you prob just saved me some headaches. Will do 2-3 coats of Primecoat on the fishbox instead.

Second coat of Primecoat on the cabin tops was still tacky this morning probably because it got humid and dumped rain last night. Hopefully it will be fully cured by this evening so I can apply the first top coat.

I mixed a little too much Primecoat last night so I decided to paint the cabin/anchor locker bulkhead, which was just bare 1/2" plywood. Anchor locker with become an actual functioning anchor locker with the addition of hatches on this bulkhead and on the top cap next week.
http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps673b5730.jpg

You guys may have noticed I don't have cushions in the cabin. Got a quote last year for marine foam wrapped in white vinyl for around $2k, which is not happening. If anyone knows a decent, affordable upholsterer in MA or has Sceptre/Tsunami/Savage cabin cushions available please let me know.

Anyone know if I can change the original title of this thread to "1978 23 Savage Inboard - Ongoing Projects"? A lot more happening now than when I originally posted.

Cheers,
Mike

Aft Deck plate is up for sender replacement, wiring clean-up, re-pack rudder post, beef up 36 year old muffler and run livewell plumbing. Tell ya what, there is not much real estate in the bilge of this boat.

This is the underside of the aft deck plate, which I believe the previous owner had recored and glassed around 2010. Already knew the deck was solid, and this glass job looks very clean:
http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps629a409a.jpg

Tanks and muffler. Tanks were new in 2011, so not sure why but one of the senders failed. Will replace both while deck is up. Muffler is old as dirt and has a couple patches on it. Plan is to pull it, grind and re-wrap in glass.

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...psb367fbeb.jpg
http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...psc227316b.jpg

Then removed wrap from refrigerated pack of meat, added some secret ingredients, formed into patties, grilled and consumed.

Progress on non-skid application on the fore deck. Taped off pattern, rolled a coat of Perfection, sprinkled Intergrip particles. I had to touch up some chips on the hatch this morning with Primecoat and will be applying final Perfection top coat tonight. Happy with the results so far.

Non-skid rookie mistake

I'm sure most guys already knew this, and I should have asked and done my homework first, but just a quick heads up to anyone applying non-skid using the paint-sprinkle-paint method: leave the tape down before applying the second top coat over the dried non-skid particles! I made the mistake of removing the tape pattern after the first coat had cured to the particles and prior to applying the second top coat. That second coat is apparently essential to seal 100% of the the particles in place. Even though I did a thorough vacuum job with the brush fitting on my shop vac, I still ended up spreading a small amount of particles where they shouldn't be. It's not a lot, but enough where I'll now have to do some tedious sanding on the glossy parts of the pattern before final top coat. Total rook move. Aside from that, the Intergrip texture came out great and even with the one top coat, it feels very durable.

Mike

zendora 06-03-2014 11:41 AM

Well, another rookie mistake set me back a couple days. A friend had some polyester resin available which I used to glass polystyrene foam insulation panels to the underside of the deck panel and hatch of the forward fish box. The foam basically turned into soup so I had to redo the entire thing with old reliable epoxy. Dumbass. Here's attempt #2 which was a success.

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...psdf5d54ee.jpg

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...ps22f04a6e.jpg

Other progress since last post - wired new macerator pump for fish box, installed Garmin GSD10 fuel sensor, new senders on both tanks, lots of wiring clean up, re-patched/glassed muffler, installed new intake hose and through hull drain out the stern for livewell. Drain system is CG approved reinforced hose to bronze through hull with a flange and flapper valve similar to the exhaust port - safe, clean, and hopefully it works! Will take some pics tonight.

Tonight's punch list on the fish box insulation project - install thru hull drain, plumb to new macerator pump, apply Interlux epoxy primecoat.

zendora 06-10-2014 07:10 AM

Finally launched last Saturday. Went out for a 30 min shake down and spent most of the day cleaning her up. I actually accomplished more than I thought I would for once, and hopefully with one more day of misc tinkering and clean up, this boat will be damn close to exactly how I want it.

Cheers,
Mike

Savage Saga Continues

A quick look back at my boat the day I took delivery 4 years ago:

http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/...IMG_0023-1.jpg

I've chipped away at projects every year, which have included a new custom leaning post, powder coated aluminum doghouse, various electronics upgrades, custom electronics box, livewell installation, complete overhaul of electrical system, cap rail core replacement, rub rail replacement, new bootstripe, complete interior paint and non-skid application, and many more add-ons and modifications I'm probably forgetting at this point. Clean, simple systems has been the goal, and I'm happy to report we've now achieved that from stem to stern. Thanks again to everyone on here for the endless knowledge and inspiration.

Here are a few shots as she sits today, the product of pure obsession:

Feenan-

The boat looks great. Who did the wiring, Chris Walsh?

The big question is...after all that work are you catching any fish?

Ed

Thanks Ed, yea Chris's guys up at Crockers.

Havent fished nearly as much as I'd like this year with a 1 year old daughter at home, but we've had her on the boat a handful of times working on her sealegs.

How's your 27 coming?

Ed 09-06-2015 12:37 PM

Hi Mike-

The 27 is coming along nicely. Full engine tuneup (injectors, plugs, waterpumps, filters, belts, etc) followed by a complete repaint of the engine cowlings and chaps. Boat runs great and is fast...53-55mph depending on conditions. This fall I will be having a new hardtop made and will be recoring some hatches. New electronics in the works too.

Your boat looks fantastic. Chris' guys did an excellent job on the wiring. Well done.

I hear you on the baby thing - we have a 10 month old - so it is not always easy to get out.

Did you do your paintwork or did you sub it out?

zendora 09-08-2015 05:50 PM

Awesome, that is some serious speed. You'll be lapping me, that's for sure.

I had Loc Vo from East Boston do the fairing, primer and finish paint, and I did the non-skid with Kiwi Grip.

To follow up with a rare fishing report, we hooked up yesterday and lost a 2 hr battle with a fish I believe was in the 100" ballpark. Had one good opportunity and whiffed on the harpoon shot. The fish took another run after the miss, we got back to the leader a second time but he darted under the boat and broke off. Here are the heartbreaking pics:
