soda blasted bottom on sceptre
2 Attachment(s)
I just had my bottom soda blasted and will be barrier coating tomorrow. I am thinking of going with interlux offshore vc. This is a bottom paint for race boats that you can burnish. Do any of you guys have experience with this stuff? I am trailering the boat and need something harder rather than too ablasive.

Who'd you get for soda blasting?
|
Greg Silva out of Westport Ma, Southcoast Sodablast. Very nice job and clean, spent alot of time in preparation.
|
Mike - What boat is that one? You pick up a new sceptre?
|
Yes this is a new one. I just picked it up from a friend of mine. This was CSC member Jenalynn's old boat. This was the original for sale thread http://www.classicseacraft.com/commu...ad.php?t=23887

2 coats of offshore vc by interlux. Going to need another coat. Not happy with this bottom paint so far. After 2 coats still not covering completely. Not happy with this paint for 300 bucks a gallon.

"Not happy with this paint for 300 bucks a gallon"
OUCH.......I know what you mean, you would think this stuff has gold mixed in as a filler!! Shooot, just a quart of regular Interlux is around $45.....jeeeez!!! |
Yeah i went through 1 gallon and got 2 coats out of it. I have these what looks like spider cracks in the paint when it dries. I think it may be from the barrier coat not fully curing. I'm not sure but i'm not happy having to buy another gallon of this stuff.

after the blasting - was the bottom finished sanded and solvent wiped down ? coats of barrier ? alternated grey and white to get the needed thickness ? when applying the coats of the barrier, did you wait till the barrier was kicked - meaning, use the "thumb test" - touch the epoxy with your thumb, does the epoxy stick to it ? did you wait till the barrier was fully kicked before painting with antifouling paint ? you are aware of the recomended application temps of the barrier coat, yes ? |
I've used this barrier coat before and never had this problem. The barrier coat was cured cause i went all around the boat and checked. I'm working with 2 bullet heaters working all the time. I think it is this paint for some reason they recommend 3 to 4 coats and i only have on 2 . I will give it another week and then hit it with another coat to see what i come up with. There may have been some spots with the barrier coat that was thicker than others that may not have not cured completely.

usually: what you're seeing is the end result of painting over top of epoxy that's not fully kicked... |
This will give me a chance to try out my new porter cable sander on those spots.

Soda blasting is the way to go.Sanded mine by hand and will never do that again. |
Thx for providing cost.. What is the going rate ?
I have been putting this project off but need to do it. It is one job I would not ever consider doing myself. I'll take the savings from all the other projects and blow it here.. What did you barrier coat with ? Thx. Looks great ! |
I used interprotect 2000E which is ok just not very good with the bottom paint i used. I used interlux offshore vc it is a harder bottom paint and something that you can buff, does not have any antifouling properties. I will be trailering the boat so i thought this would have been a good pick. It's turning out to be a nightmare. Interprotect 2000E is suppose to be a non sanding primer, unfortunately it is not for the type of bottom paint i used. The manufacterer says that i got spider cracking because i was suppose to use an 80 grit on the 2000E after letting it cure for 24 hours. I did let it cure for 24 hours but i used 220 just to scuff it up. Doesn't seem to make sense to buid up a barrier coat and then sand it off.
