I'm not worthy

Hey Guys,

Its been a longtime since I've posted here. I need to relay a story from the weekend involving my 85' 23 CC. Please do not take this to seriously or be offended, because I had to laugh in the end.

So, I'm sitting in Martha's Vinyard this weekend at the dock in OB and waiting to pick a couple people up at the dock. A guy sees me pull up and is walks over to take a look at the boat. Anyone who owns a seacraft knows how people seem to gravitate and ask questions and check out the boat. In any event this guy say nice Seacraft (I repainted 8 or so years ago and like to think she's a pretty sharp looking boat.)

So we are talking about the boat and he finally asks "What year?" I reply its an 1985 and I repainted 10 years ago. The guy responds "Oh its not a "Potter Hull" and with a look of disgust walks away like I was on a hunk of $hit bayliner!!

As he walked away I just chuckled to myself and shook my head, my wife and friends came down, I'm still smirking and shaking my head, my wife asks whats the matter, I replied "nothing at all" and continued our day on the water on my inferior POS boat, what can I do? I'm not worthy.

P.S. If this guy knew anything about Seacrafts, from immediately looking at the boat he should have been able to tell approx. what year my hull was. I have owned this boat since 1996 and could not be happier with the construction and ride. Don't get me wrong the "Potters" are nice and very well built, but enough of the snobbery in regards to anything that is not a "Potter".

Again, please do not take this post too seriously and jump all over me. I told the story to a couple of the members here and they all said I needed to post up here. I just wanted to share what I think was a pretty funny experience with you guys and I love this site for the wealth of information and entertainment it provides.

mine is not a "Potter" either. :p Digging thorough the hull before rebuilding her i found the glass laminations were quite good.

I have seen first hand "bonafide" SC's that were tossed together just as bad as any other production boat of the time.

INMO what makes the seacraft special is the hull design. when choosing a re-build, I would not care if a hull was a 71 or 85.

Don't sweat it....My buddy (spirit dude's) sea craft is the same year '85, and mine is a potter '80 and his boat is just as good and maybe even heavier than mine...check out his thread on the floor job he is in the process of doing...his glass guy said this boat is rediculously overkill !!!! And the stringers and lamination was perfect after 28 years of beating the snott out of the boat.... I fished his boat when it was brand new in '85.

X2.

I have a '72 Potter 25 and a '83 Seacraft Industries 20. The quality differences are negligible. Both are great boats in their own way. The hull design is the thing.

I know my truck was made by robots, but I had to make sure it was a Wednesday truck.

It may be time to replace the battery in my decoder ring. It translated the above as "Where's my meds?"

Only on Wednesday as long as there are no scheduled breaks or lunches on the line.

I do like the camel! :)

Me too.

Dave, trust me when I tell you, you would have not liked me when we were doing a "trip to Europe" back in the day. What are you guys doing?

A boom box and maybe later a new Korean car...

As someone once said..."It's all about the ride"

Obviously some toolbox who really knows zilch about these boats. My father's former '82 23 Sceptre was built like a brick sh!t house and looked pretty damn good for its age up until he sold it in 2011 with no major work ever done in its entire life (he was the 2nd owner). Rumor has it CSY had to stop building them because they lost money on every one, hence their short run.

Whether it's a '69, '89 or '99, they've all got the VDH and that's what really counts after all, right? ;)

The first time I went out Boynton, I got it. The Ride. `89 Slacker. Anyone sellin` a hookah?
Heard the same thing about CSY. Some early Moesly 21 race hulls are thin in places where his mind shines and they have only lasted 50 years so far...

Some people act like Potter him self built them. You never know who was on the line that day, who sucked at their job, who got pissed that day and said f- it while they were building each boat. One day a true crafts man next day a guy who lied on his application who only made it one week at the shop. Many good boats threw out the years and some less than great too. I rater have a shitty made seacraft that was built by a dumb @ss on a Friday afternoon than a bay liner that was built by the company's best employee any day! I think the seacrafts that came out not as good as other were better than most other boats being built in the Potter era and thats why they are so good. High quality control during that time lead to better boats, thicker glass builds and overall the great design.
