68 scampi

Hello; I joined this forum because I just purchased a 68 scampi. It came full of leaves, dirt, and a 3 foot Brazilian pepper tree. Now that its cleaned out the fun begins. The deck was painted about 20 years ago and after sitting out in the Florida sun and rain for the last 10-13 years its burned bad. I'm thinking paint stripper. Does anyone have an opinion on a good brand to use?
Any advise would be greatly appreciate .
James in Fort Myers Florida.

I can't believe a 3 ft Brazilian pepper tree hid this little brittle boat from me and my aerial eyes .

Although I confess I've been kind of lazy with my earth monitoring lately and ain't got no place to park it, and I never really wanted one anyway:p ...

Wannna sell it?:D

Nice find.
Take pictures. save them to a file, and use the paper clip on the "Go Advanced " button to attach the image directly from your computer file to your post content. that should work.

Welcome aboard and congratulations and good luck on your new found project.

Now, were those tabs yet another brilliant Moesly thought? Yup. Effective simplicity.

RUSTYNTABATHA 07-19-2013 09:20 PM

sorry ... reference was to the hot wheels ... lol But the tabs are really cool as well.

gofastsandman 07-19-2013 10:51 PM

Plexi hot wheels had a neat bubble. Sharing Seacrets.
just like the Scampi.

Tree,cigaret,bubble,and seats

Ok;
Tremendous response, thank you. This could fill a few pages, I will make it brief. 1st I still have a day job, love the water, am a tinkerer, have 2 other boats which we use regularly(cruiser & 15'jet), have owned 14 boats in 45 years.
10 days ago I saw the back and the front of this boat shoe horned between 2 derelict VW'S. the out drive and the windshield caught my attention. Old like what I learned to ski with, IO rare in the early 60's. I stopped and looked for hull I'd = no numbers on right rear, got the name. Went home did research, found the Moesly web site, read all the information and looked at the 15' brochure, no windshield though. The man who owns the 2 VW'S has about 60 more behind a chain link fence, and is an acquaintance of ours. On Thursday last week I called him and said hey Bob what's the deal with that old boat by the street. He said I had it out at the house but I had to move it last week. He's owned it over 20 years. So I said you gonna sell it? Yea, thers a fella that wants to buy the engine. I said I'll stop by tomorrow and take a look. Went over and looked for something that would verify scampi, I found tag, left side under deck.
Made an offer, he said no this guy will give me more for the engine, ok how much will you take? $$$$ Ok I'll call you tomorrow (Saturday) and pick it up. This is truly a boat rescue, this boat was on its way to the scrap yard. The county insinerator loves these old Fiberglas heaps, they burn really hot, makes a lot of electricity.
Last Sunday we planted the tree by the hanger where we will work on the boat.
Smokem if you gottem.
The plexi bubble is missing, so glad Bob didn't fill in the hole.
The seats; one visible authentication for this boat are the logo bottom stamped on the back of the bucket seats. I was real concerned about the seats not being original because Bob had them upholstered and the logos were covered up.

James

PS. I am surprised no one has mentioned the windshield, since it was not even an option. Bob said " I installed the windshield, after I painted over the ugly orange deck".

Not original, but it looks light and functional. Also from about the same era + maybe 5-10 years.

Very cool find. Do you know what you'll repower with? Is there enough room in the engine box for an inline 4?

. . .

James,

Kudos on saving a VERY rare boat! Great research job!

Send a PM to forum member Keys Cruz. I think he knows the guys that made the plexi bubble! They could also probably make new plexi for that windshield!

Denny

RUSTYNTABATHA 07-20-2013 10:34 AM

love the windshield... it looks very similar to the one used on the Small Fountain boats... which are my favorate... The plexi bubble is one of my favorite parts of the little thing... what are your plans for power ?? you have all the original parts but wonder on availibilty fo rreplacements for a rebuild .. and the newer 4 cylinders will most likely make the same hp and be lighter ?? just a thought

Old'sCool 07-20-2013 04:35 PM

Awesome find!! Congrats and keep the pics coming please. This thread will probably set a record for number of pages :)

Capt Chuck 07-20-2013 07:25 PM

Great Find! !! And welcome to CSC.

I just tossed out all my Sears Catalogs and wallpapered the walls with Strick's photos.

Btw: Carla, you need too start a Scampi Scrap Book:p
