Scored the hookah.
Well, a HUGE thanks to Normagain. She needs some love, but the clamage was too good to pass up. Bracket vs open transom??? This makes it harder. No Euro for me thanks. Sorry Bly, did not mean to insult you.
http://ventura.craigslist.org/boa/4043339788.html Honda 5 hp yum. Thomas compressor. Yum, thanks Bones. Buggzzzzzz beware. Yum. Scotsman beware. |
That's a steal!

I am currently being fitted for an ankle bracelet. If your FF/GPS goes on fritz the cat,
I was not there...Shhh. |
"Slacker Air"

Nice Score GF!
Don't forget the Gucci Wetsuit so you can hide in the Sargassum Weeds  http://www.bluetunaspearfishing.com/...mm_stone-4.jpg |
Hey Ken and Chuck, could you imagine the State of Florida putting out a $1 reward for dead Lion fish?? I can see it now.....GFS in his Gucci wet suit towing his hookah from his mother ship "The Slacker" all over the Keys spending days on end making his living spearing lion fish. I figure within in five years he will have rounded up 90% of those damn things and be famous. He will have his own Lion fish TV show and move "Duck Dynasty" out of the top spot. It will be nice knowing such a celebrity!!

Slacker Air coming to a reef near you.
Have a wetsuit courtesy of Blue Heron. http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...n/DSC00145.jpg Thoughts...Pull the head and check the bore. Add fan for cooling. Wheels. Aluminum axle? Snorkle. Best way to prep for paint? Wire brush and degreaser. Alcohol. Soap and water. Rinse. Zinc chromate primer. Rustoleum epoxy paint. All advice is welcome. Cheerzzz, GFS |
I have one of those things. I attached a 6' snorkel that has my dive flag zip tied to it. Best thing I did was attach a real muffler off of a motorcycle to it to make it bearable for the guy keeping watch. I would highly recommend an accumulator tank. You can buy aluminum ones online with a bunch of threaded bungs to plumb it inline and provide a drain for the water. It will cool and dry the air before you breathe it and most importantly provide a reserve when the engine stalls or runs out of fuel. You can actually feel the pressure dropping while you're diving and plan your ascent versus one normal breath and then none. I love my hookah rig.

Thanks Bits! Accumulator size? I thought about a better muffler having enjoyed the din of cracker air, but a MC size sounds great. Hookah diving is awesome.

prre and post air filtration !!!!!! no rustoleum paint... it sux !! they send us that crap out here and it peels off after a few months in the salt environment ... I would find a good high temp epoxy...
|
What kind of filters? Who makes good hi temp epoxy paint?
Would a 5 gal tank have a benefit over 3 gal.? http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Gallon-Alu...e36bf8&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Gallon-5-P...6a7dff&vxp=mtr |
as large a tank as you want to carry... the larger the tank the longer the uh ho time... as for the high temp paint look for something like a tractor / commercial engine paint... it would be designed for prolonged outdoor / sun exposure due to its intended use... as for the filter .. i'd have to do some mining on the internet... i have been looking for a pink camoflage welding shield as of late for my daughter... she is taking welding classes and her mother told her if she was in the top of the class and made all A's and B's we would buy her what she wanted..... little did my wife know that it would have to be custom made.... but if anyone comes across one let me know....
quick search brought up this one.. https://www.filtertechs.com/shop/pro...61738de6dab794 the inlet filter is more or less a dust filter... the tanks are cool !! just put a valve on each port and a quick connect and add hoses as needed !!!! |

Sandy....
"Cracker Air" has successfully provided thousands of hours of good air supply without any storage tank!! With 100 ft. of hose out you can feel the vibration stop through the hose if the gas engine stops for what ever reason..... When that happens it is time to come up!! Was at 60 ft.. engine stopped!! Made my way back up slow and easy with enough air in the line... If you like, carry a "Spare Air" if diving more than 65 ft.. I do !!! As far as paint goes high temp engine (Ford Blue for you) or BBQ grill paint will do just fine.. As far as filters, I use the filters that are stock with the Gast pump.. About $25 a piece... I use two for the PCA10 Gast.... Keep it simple Sam!! |
What MMP are you guys pushing to your regulators? Are these oil less compressors?

Ran outta air on snuba in 20 ft. No big deal. I have a spare Octo I will part in. As I camp, so shall I dive. Simple and light. I do carry a lot of sandbags on my belt for a squid weight. Cheers, GFS |

A friend of mine that's a Professional Engineer who runs a consulting business specializing in restoration of reinforced concrete buildings/oceanfront condo's specified it for protecting the cables in post-tension buildings. (These are cables installed in the slabs of high rise buildings that are stretched to keep the concrete in tension after it cures. If the cables rust thru, it's a serious problem!) I used it on the floorboards of the old 'Cuda I'm restoring. The guy who painted it that does professional show car restorations is so impressed with it that he's now using it also. It's very tough stuff. They've coated a rusty brake drum with it, and were unable to chip it with a ball peen hammer! The only downside to it is that it won't tolerate UV, so it needs a topcoat if it's exposed to the sun. Denny |
I would go with the 5 gallon aluminum tank. Make sure you mount it in a way that positions one of the ports at the bottom of the tank so you can drain it. Any filters are really just to protect the bore of the compressor and there isn't any dust to speak of out on the water. I'd skip the filter as it's just going to get wet and soak up water. It's nice to have a baffle in the intake tube to cut down on the noise and a snorkel to keep out water. I made mine extra long to keep it in the fresh air and avoid sucking up any CO. If you mount a muffler you can point it up at an angle and get it to blow most of the exhaust over the gunwale. I run a 100' hose to a tee and then two 50' hoses to the regs. I use small outside diameter hose as there is significant drag on the hose itself in any current.

Thanks gang. Good to hear from you Bits.
Will rebuild carb and collect other goodies. I am nothing if not a good scrounger. Now I need a speargun. Cheers, GFS |
Now I need a speargun.
Cheers, GFS Oh no!! How you gonna squeeze it inside your body bag tent? :) |

Thinking about VHT header/ engine
paint. Supposed to be heat dissipating and a silica/ceramic coating. Not sure if it is compatible w/ zinc chromate primer and will call them. They also have primer. http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/flameproof/ Normagain shot me some pics of the hookah and it looks better than the CL pics. Santa and his lunch money left PBIA from runway 186L and should land at LAX on time and on budget if they don`t eat too many cookies along the way. Bits, do you have a recommendation for a MC mufflah? |

I'm beginning to think your going to be disappointed at how quiet this little gem is! Personally, I would clean carb, replace air filters, drive belt and hit the rig with some WD40 on a rag and go!!! On old outboard collector taught me the WD exterior magician clean up trick.
|
I just have to overthink things. My nature. She will get prep and paint for durability. Not originality. Thanks for all of your help Norm!
Heard por15 holds heat so that may not be best. VHT needs 500f to cure so that`s out. Zinc chromate and engine enamel may be the solution. Thoughts on a crankshaft fan for compressor cooling? I like my 150 loud n proud, and my hookah quiet. Diving is serene. Fishing at its best is mayhem. I guess I`m looking for serene mayhem. Slacker Air |
Skip the zinc chromate, hexavalent chromate is bad for you- and you don't want to inhale it. And you will be inhaling.
Maybe you can get the non hexavalent kind, now that Europe outlawed hexavalent. Skip the POR15- it is the same toxic urethane chemistry we badmouth around here Engine enamel sounds benign enough. But I don't know. |
Powder coating shop will sand blast then powder coat?
|
Not knowing anything about chemical danger sure makes decision making difficult.
Thanks all for the advice, GFS |
