Interesting though. I did not expect much response from this site, I was hoping though that people would look and pass it on. I have had four (4) view's and 3 comments, the comments coming from myself and FF. Is the economy that good that no-one needs work? Or have we just gotten lazy-----. And, I am not the only person in the marine field complaining about this. |
Who would want to do fiberglass work all day? They would have to be crazy! :D

Besides, good glass people ARE crazy, you ought to know. ;) |
People are getting lazy... Good luck on your hunt... Its hard to get people to work anywhere.... If i lived down there i would work for you on my 14 days off for the experience... My buddy that has the canvas shop complains about people he tries to get to help... he calls them board holders... because they are qulified to hold the other end of the board and thats it.... if he has large of complicated jobs that require extra help htat has to be able to think he schedules it when i'm home...
|
You would think bad as the economy is there would be people knocking down your door for work. I know people are getting lazier and lazier but wow. I would think you would at least get some unqualified basic laborers wanting work. This just shows how sorry people are getting and how the unemployed doesn't really want to work. Good luck. Like rusty said if I was closer I would like to get some good experience out of it myself.
|
What you both have said is so true.
At the beginning of the Great Recession I was having very good qualified people begging for work for little pay. Now I can't get unqualified people to apply. I take that back, I have people come fresh out of trade skool (they are not young) who want to make $25 an hour with NO experience or tools and they want to work w/e's to see if it works out for them before they quit their serving job. Amazing----. |
If i could restore Seacrafts all day long I would move down there and work for you..lol
Just kidding, good luck |
Start a local trade school at your shop and train them!
I will sign up!... Seriously though...more high school kids need to learn a trade... If I could do it over again I would have said heck with college...and been an HVAC tech...would have owned my own AC co. by now oh well! -Fred |
Here's the long and short of it.
Back when I started, I hired people I that I used to work with 25-30 years ago. Good people, knew their stuff. Problem was, times change, technology changes, I could not get them to change. So, I changed them, went with younger people. Now, everyone in my shop has learned from me, my way of doing stuff, the way we do stuff. It has not been an easy ride. I have had people come out of the trade schools, I have paid them, trained them, paid to have training for them. Some I canned, some quit when they thought they knew it all. I am not against training, it takes alot of patience, work and money. But, gosh darn it, it would be nice if they had something, some tool, something. The last group to come through, fresh out off trade school, had not one tool, not one. Nobody wants to learn the old way, they want to get in, do it, and get paid. Oh, and they latest way that it is done, is the best way. Anyway, plod along I do------. |
Weren't you in high school 30 years ago? Just askin. Ha ha! :D

I think it was fheld that said he wished he learned a trade. Well, in 1978, I wuz 18, (hint, hint), I came up from the Cayman Islands and went straight into OMC skool. From then on I have been working, no college. I'm not convinced it was the right way, but for me it was the only option. The trade is good, but going to a good college would have opened other doors. Not saying I would have stayed once the door opened, but it would have been nice to peek in. Just sayin-----. :) |
Jeez dude, yer ancient. But still younger than the Herm. Kids nowadays.

When I started in the POS (Point of sale) business, that means cash registers, Jewish pianos..... you catch my drift.. back in 1975. Electronics were just coming about.. My former boss hired young skulls full of mush and formed us the way he wanted!! Ya know what, it worked!! I owe my whole career to this very smart business man. OK, sip sip, Sailor Jerry... agghhhhh... I feel good! |

Yes it is especially if your employed by the state :) which I'm not just paying their taxes lol
I've been through Fort Lauderdale a few times really nice in the winter I'll be spending New Year's Day there before heading to the keys for 2 weeks of needed vacation |
Life is expensive, especially in south florida (getting more expensive)(after this weeks fed move it's going to accelerate more), your new hire has bills. Bills your salary likely won't cover, not to mention his largest expense, healthcare (I didn't see that you were offering that). If he's married and has kids...no way he's covering his expenses with his salary...even if his wife is working (and not making great money), they still come up short. If he's single and young, he likely has a lot of school or other debt...again same as above. OR he can collect welfare "the single mom is better off earnings gross income of $29,000 with $57,327 in net income & benefits than to earn gross income of $69,000 with net income and benefits of $57,045." see link below for full story. Also both persons you are looking for can work freelance and make a lot more...IF they are good. Sorry you're having a hard time filling the spots, but I can totally see why spots like yours (and the plumbers) are hard to fill and why you are getting the applicants you are getting. You do great work. Hang in there. I've heard the same thing a lot.
PS. without going political on your thread, you have 3 main problems, the FED, an egregiously large government, overwhelmingly disproportionate healthcare costs. great article here...title says it all http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2012-1...-welfare-state great video on health care costs http://www.upworthy.com/his-first-4-...-little-sick-2 |

I agree with everything you have said. What is interesting though is it never gets to pay scale. Healthcare is the next mountain to climb. Don't get on me about small business and government. I guess I am too stupid to realize what I am trying to do. I'll try anyway, being broke again won't hurt me, been there and done that, just need enough to get me and my trawler to "Conch land". I don't mind training, been doing that for a long time, just wish the aplicants had better attitudes. Anyway, I'm in Kennesaw, gettin me some more edgumencation on Yamhaers. When I get home, got lots of work waitin. Could be worse, no work. |
Here is your next help wanted add ... "Are you looking at going to trade school ? Want to get paid while learning a trade ?? I am looking for self motivated High School Grad... with a good attitude and willingness and ability to absorb the knollege you are willing to teach.. must have some tools and willing to buy more to meet job needs. "
Try this as your post.. If I live closer i would be all over this but i wouldn't be working for cash !! It would be free labor in exchange for materials and help on my boat... Since i wouldn't be employed by you it is a win win... i work for free and you write off the materials of my project as a loss on a non paying customer ... I do this with friends that have business's here... Really hope you find a Good Kid to invest your time and effort in... |
"being broke again won't hurt me, been there and done that"
Hey, as they say "practice makes perfect" :) Know how you feel, being broke ain't that hard to do. I've done it most of my life, it's easy. Just kills me what small businesses go through to make the Gobberment happy. |
one of my favorite sayings i have seen as of late... " i started with nothing and i still have most of it " ... lol

I think Cayman Boys problem stems from lack of vision of where they could end up, what it takes to be reasonably successful, maybe lack of ambition, and no realization of what not investing in yourself will do to you in the long run. All too common human condition.
The way I learned the marine A/c business was to go to work for a guy with the understanding that he would pay me less than I was worth and I could ask all the questions I could ask and have access to all his manuals. He was fair and it worked real well, especially for me. He made a profit and I learned a lot, fast. I've offered the same deal to others, would love to pass the business along to somebody else, but no takers. |
