Fall 2014

I know there is a lot of discussion on Long Point...BUT I seem to remember that if we want to do something this year at FT. Desoto shouldn't we be looking at dates and reserving now?

Snookerd 02-04-2014 08:46 AM

The window to book it opens around April for October on-line (6 mos).

Time is now...we can always scrap the camp sites, but we should pick a date...

kmoose 04-02-2014 01:20 PM

I say we make the destination a little more challenging..... How about Ft. Jefferson? :D

We can bury some gas in 5 gallon tins at the Marquesas so we can top off on the way home, to make KW. That way we don't have to carry all of the fuel to the "Brick House" Fort and back!

Now IT, our northern friends have been following the Long Point thread all winter long wondering why their gathering plans gain no traction and you rub more road salt in their wounds.

Strick has bigger gatherings. No date= no prom.

I may be tooling around N.E. this September following tuna and old friends.

Speak to me about this tuna thing. I got a guy with gulf of maine numbers, and a 25...

I have ZERO experience with Tunah, but would like to hook up at least a football this year.

Get'in back to the main gist of of Island Trader, Capt. "T-bucket" Ter's post what the heck is the date for the fall gathering? I'm a work'in man like Rusty and Kmoose and I got to schedule time off, in advance with the big cheeses at England Brothers or I'm liable to get pink slipped. You guys that are basking in retirement got noth'in in your schedules so you're wide dang open on options except of course for standing next to your mail box when you get your social security check at the end of the month. Capt. Ter's right - 6 months advanced registration window for non-Pinellas county residences, 7 months for Pinellas county residences for Fort Desoto Campground. But somebody important has to nail down the date if that is the deemed location, and you want to have your boat floating.

OK I will throw out some dates...Place is not as important as a date. However just to have a fall back FT. DeSoto is a good place to reserve.

Historically it seems the fall gathering is the last few weeks in October. So that would be the weekend of the 24th or the 31st.

So for all you working stiffs, check it out...it really is up to you, since us retarded guys are flexible...:D

DonV 04-03-2014 08:18 AM

Ter, the 31st is Halloween! Gee Wiz, can you imagine how frightening it would be to have an CSC Gathering on Halloween????? That would be like mash'in 23#'s of Uranium 235 together, under intense pressure. Someth'in might go "POP"! Plus Kmoose will be busy scaring the "be-Jesus" out of all the little kids in Ocala with that "get-up" he has; you know the one with the baseball cap and the sunglasses!

I had three girls living here at one time, a while back. I could sit in my easy chair when it was real quiet (which wasn't too often) and hear things break. Nobody ever knew noth'in. I finally got two of em married off, but the one that's still here can tear up an anvil or break a bowling ball in half! You ain't got none of them "girls" liv'in there at yer' place, do ya?

Mikem8560 04-03-2014 11:54 PM

is the caya costa thing in the fall a no go ?

yep... 1 is 20 the other is almost 18.... but most of my Issues are coming from the ground water reaking havok on a aging pool liner and the 3 large dogs destroying our yard... along with the Rainy cold winter that turned our entire back yard into a mud puddle due to removing trees in the fall last year and not having time for the grass to recover.... and the age of the house.... it just turned into a one thing after another type of year... then came our taxes.... and BAMN just like that it got worse !!! but i am staying possitive !!!

Cayo Costa

As far as I'm concerned Cayo Costa is still an option, but I wanted to see what Conner thought about the location and how it might work for a CSC Gathering. He has been to several gatherings and his opinion would be respected by the group. I, at this point, am only know here as a "goof" with a Keyboard. (Snookerd once accused me of actually having a Sailfish)

Hopefully, Justice Conner Davis will render an opinion, for all to consider, shortly.

In the meantime, based on Island Trader's concerns, in concert with Snookerd's overall Gatherings Program and being a Pinellas County resident, I will reserve a Deep Water Campsite at Ft. Desoto Campground. That way we have a place to tie the boats up even if the water deep water sites are taken by the time a final decision on the November Gathering site is made. If we decide on a different location for the Gathering, the park not refund, but will allow me to move the date to a different time of the year. (I'm actually camping there the week before Long Point, so I'll look more like a homeless guy than usual when I get to LP - but I'll have the hogfish!)

Rusty - I think you are right - a Positive Outlook pays the most dividends in life.

cdavisdb 04-04-2014 07:31 PM

Spent a weekend down at Terry E's place on Cayo Costa. About the only negative I can think of is: you have to get there by boat. Doesn't seem too bad.

Otherwise, its near perfect. The house is big, a very simple, off the grid kind of place, with good cooking facilities, good bathrooms and plenty of place to sleep, assuming you don't want to be extremely private. The dock can accommodate at least 6 or 7 boats, more with some thought. The beach out front is beautiful and should be mostly deserted in October. Fishing is outstanding, inshore and off. Diving ain't shabby. Fresh oysters for the picking, all you can shuck. By next fall, I'm going to find a pen shell bed around there somewhere, outstanding if you have never tried them. You can drive to where someone can pick you up, there are at least two restaurants on the water close, and places to stay on the water close if you want more privacy. There is at least one place where you can leave your vehicle and trailer with no worries about it still being there after a long weekend.

Basicly, my highly biased opinion is that its a great spot.

Connor

just mapped the road part ... and it had me launching from the boca grande side ... is this correct ?? It shows 8 plus hours for us to get down there...

cdavisdb 04-04-2014 10:05 PM

Terry comes in from Pineland, or you can launch and have a safe trailer at the north end of Boca Grande.

Rusty, Eldridge Marina is on the north side of Charlotte Harbor in Placida. Conner launched there I think. A lot of locals use the place - good people. Just duck under the swing bridge to Gaspiralla Island and then bring the Opti's up to "Yodel". 5 or 6 miles to the pass then run across the harbor and down the ICW past Cabbage Key another 2 miles, hang a starboard toward Captiva Pass and roll starboard again past the stakes off of Pejuan Cove, ease north just off the docks until you smell the smoked mullet.

It's a hike for you and Kmoose down there but Conner and I were think'in some of our "Starboard Coast" Florida brethren might squirt across SR 78 below the lake and splash in at Pineland or Bokellia south of Peace River and join in the festivities. There are rooms at the Inn on Cabbage Key and cottages with docks there, homes on Upper Captiva, a County Camp ground on the north end of Cayo Costa or our place is open to whoever can put up with the various noises I emit at night. Thankfully, most of the sounds emitted, are drowned out by the sound of waves running down the beach at night.

I'm good with whatever the group decides for a location though; from Cape San Blas to the Marquesas - even that Drillin' Platform you got, out in the Gulf.

NoBones 04-04-2014 10:34 PM

It would be Punta Rassa for me.....

I love the Ole' Sonesta Sanibel Harbor Resort!!!

937 south tower..;)
It was a fun condo!

Now Marriott..

Terry-not true....you are doing a great job of carrying the torch for the "has been" CSC Gathering group! I agree we need to lock something in! Cayo Costa or Ft Desoto?? Where does everyone want to be?

DonV 04-05-2014 08:27 AM

Danny and all, I'm good with either. Ft. Desoto is closer for me, however further south is also good. Like it has been mentioned if it is Ft. Desoto we can't sit on our duff too long. Them tourist grab all the spots real quickly.

Just looked at the fort desoto site and there are ALOT of campsites... what area are we looking to reserve if we go there ??? Also it is still too far out to book ... it only goes 6 months out ...

NoBones 04-05-2014 09:00 PM

165 to 192 are premo......

You can tie up to the bumper of your rig!

It is a good all around campground..

A little tricky from the "best boat ramp in the state" to the sites..:o

One time and you are home free..

The north part of the "T" on the east side is all pretty good but a little shallow up next to the seawall and some oysters at low tide up near the very north end. Anywhere between the two bathrooms is good. There is actually a access path to the seawall and you can tie your boat up at the seawall and use the drive through sites in the center of the campground. You just wouldn't have your boat right outside your window, but if we tie a few sites up along the seawall we can secure Seacraft Marina / AKA Port Carla. If it is Ft. Desoto on October 24 for the 2014 Fall Gathering, I can get my brother, brother-in-law and a couple of friends here is Pinellas County to grab some spots for enough of us to create a marina. Just let me know what the consensus is for the West Coast Gathering and I'm on it "like a duck on a June Bug". Maybe we can do Boca Grande next Spring, if the Gold Coasters will drag their rigs across SR 78. (They got drive thru tamales in Imokalee, Sandy!) \

YOU GUYS LET ME KNOW ABOUT FT. DESOTO - and I'll try to tie somethin' UP.

Rusty - the dock is at 26-37-52 / 82-13-39. Go to my member profile and look at the Cayo Costa Album. (don't look at the fact that I have no friends) There are waypoints on the first picture of the boats at the dock that will "walk you in".
Conner eased the Safari right in there and he has one of those deals where there are two props on the same shaft turning different directions with a dang 350 Police motor twist'in 'em!

Sandy - I'm one my third glass of wine and I still can't figure out the significance of those pictures of the squirrel eating out of the spoon and pig laying on the floor. Can I get a translation?

Ken - It's both Red and White - "Studder Home" White Merlot
I put it in an Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice jug when I run offshore and tell the FWC officer at the pass, when he wants to snoop around and check everything out, "I hate that dang cranberry juice, but my Doctor makes me drink it". They just look at me and say "I know, those Doctors are a pain in the ass, have a good day." Some days I feel like a Rumrunner!

No, No, No, Mon Frere, That was not my thought by any means. However, sometimes I'm not sure if it is a satellite "data burst", I'm on the wrong frequency modulation, or is I just need a Navajo Code Talker to break it down for me. We'er all good here and I'll score a Ovaltine Decode ring the end of this month and better off than if I had a German Enigma Machine swiped off a Nazi sub.
Roll on Brother, I'll try to keep up.
