Coaming Bolster
 

Has anyone fabricated their own coaming bolsters ? I'd like to make a set for my 18' SF and would like to know what's the best material to use for backing, foam & vinyl. Any tips or insight would be appreciate it.
Did a search but didn't come up with anything !

I made some years ago using the cellular pvc, (like the pvc trim boards they sell at Lowes). Easy to work with. Solid and flexible.

I re-covered the pvc type backers in mine a few years ago and they're holding up good.

Interested in hearing opinions/advice weather the coaming pads on an 18' would look better if they go all the way forward to the anchor locker or just end at the junction where the caps meet the liner just above fish box/raised forward casting deck ?

So I finally got all the material necessary to do my bolsters but would like to incorporate the seacraft logo on them. I have looked into embroidery but was told that the thread will get sun bleached and eventually fade in time especially dark colored thread such as navy blue, the color I would like for the logo . The folks at Sailrite said Sunbrella was supposed to come out with a special thread for the very same purpose some time ago but haven't yet and I don't want to wait.
So I'm looking at having the logo " pad printed " on the Midship vinyl I'm using.
Is anyone familiar with this process or had it done ?
Also interested to hear other alternatives.

I did my bolsters this year but haven't done the seats and cushions. Have good no great gals with computerized embroider machines. Vinyl is cheap but good work on embroidery is great.

I made my own. Used marine vinyl and blue foam. I used a electric knife to shape the foam. Used exterior plywood and gave it a good coating of epoxy resin on all surfaces. Used a mortise bit to make pockets for the SS hex head bolts and filled with epoxy/Cab to hold them in place. I was concerned that if I ever needed to remove the pads that the bolts would spin trying to remove the nuts if the bolts weren't secured, nor did I want to use screws by going in from under the gunnels. I sewed end panels on the pads to avoid the pointed corner look. I watched youtube on sewing and used my daughters sewing machine with a upholstery needle. Full disclosure, I have never even sewed a button before, let alone used a sewing machine. They are not perfect, plus I just got out of a shoulder replacement surgery and still was in the damn arm sling. But I'm pretty happy of the results and they are very comfortable leaning against jigging all day in some sloppy seas. And yes on the embroidery fading. I made a what I call a bolster across the dog house to fill the gap and seal along the transom. I added some cup holders and rod holders to add some functionality to it. I thought it would be cool to add a little splash of custom and had the boats name embroider'd on it. It has faded some. I keep it covered when not using the boat and it has stopped that. I saved a decent amount of money doing it myself,,,gregg
