23' Sceptre complete windshield/frame and soft top with new SS tubing
If you've gotten sticker shock when pricing a new soft top or windshield for your 23' Tsunami or Sceptre, here's your chance to upgrade at a more reasonable price, with minimal effort.
When I refurbished my '77 model a little over a year ago, the entire frame/windshield was removed and the frame cleaned, sanded, and painted with black Signature paint. The old aluminum soft top tubing was discarded and new heavy duty stainless tubing fabricated. The frame and glass are in very good condition. The tubing is new. The soft top and its side curtains are in fair - good condition with no rips or tears. There are some scratches and a very slight amount of hazing in the plastic, but it is very serviceable and looks fine. My plan was to eventually replace the canvas and plastic with new, but I decided I'd rather do a hard top similar to a '74 model I did a few years ago, which means everything above the top deck must go. I'm asking $900, which is a fraction of the cost of a new windshield and/or soft top. Located in eastern NC. http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/...ps48cb89c3.jpg http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/...psa20b732d.jpg http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/...ps691e4b83.jpg Here is the enclosed '74 model. I am 6'3" and wanted to stand without hitting my head. It works great, but the height messes up the esthetics of a pretty hull. (Lots of windage too!) Since I mostly drive sitting down, I really don't need the headroom. http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0262eec9.jpg I plan to lower the hard top on the 77' hull about 8-10" and remove the side and front overhang. Removing the overhang will allow fabrication of the top and sides from a one piece mould, greatly reducing time and materials. The eventual goal is to make a bolt-on hard top available as a retrofit for others, at reasonable cost. Here is an edited image of the proposed design. http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/...ps63e87b31.jpg |
Here is the new enclosure without windows.
http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5wm7ojbg.jpg And here is the rear enclosure, rough fitted. I used 1/2" PVC, which is much cheaper and easier to use than Starboard. http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/...psuartqkws.jpg The canvas top, with its recent stainless frame, and the boat's original frame/glass windows are still available. Any offers? |

That looks great would it be real difficult to make a shorter version of the top? That may be good for some but if it were a little shorter and did not go back as far could gain a bunch of fishing space. Is it possible or would it be too much trouble?
It would be no trouble at all to make it shorter for more fishing space.

I may be interested in the windshield set up. I would need to figure out logistics of getting it north to CT. Is it broken down or in a whole piece?
It is partially broken down, but the pieces are easily separated for shipping, and easily reassembled, as I had already broken it down to clean and paint. I will get some measurements. The side windshields are quite long.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will pm you with my e-mail address.

Sold??
Yeah me too. I'm about due for a new windshield set. I have a decent full set but I gave the hatch away so it's not complete and I'd rather just buy one already restored.
Top and windshield are still in my garage, and looking for a good home. The side windows are about 9 feet long, and the top is about 5'X7', so there is no easy or economical way to ship.

Is the soft top a Bimini top?
Still in my garage, waiting for a buyer... and getting cheaper. Will sell the windshield/frame separately from the top, though it would make more sense to keep them together.

Windshield Potter Vs Tracker
Just curious, but what is the difference between the Potter 70's vs a 1984 Tracker Sceptre Windshield? I am eventually going to remove mine with the Pipe Welders top and try and sell it. It wont happen for a few months though. Just trying to see what years it would work with. The 1984 Sceptre is in I believe 5 pieces (2 sides 3 fronts). Thanks for any info that anyone could assist with.
Unless the mould was changed, it should be the same. The older Tsunami and Sceptre windshields are all 5 pieces, with the front center being hinged to allow bow access via steps in the cabin.
The top has been sold, but the windshield is still available and I'd like to get it out of my garage. This is a COMPLETE frame with glass and includes all fittings. The frame was disassembled, sanded, corrosion removed, and painted with black Signature paint. There are currently a few scratches and chips in the paint from removal from the boat that are easily repaired. The frame and glass are in good shape and will go back together very easily. $250
The complete windshield is sitting in my garage and I'm tired of looking at it. Free to whoever comes to get it in New Bern, NC.
Seriously interested and only 2.5 hrs away. If it could fit in the back of a Suburban I could come tomorrow. If it needs a trailer might take me a day or two to find one.
