Scampi in Detroit
So I get this PM. did anyone else gethis or is it ligit or a new form of spam? If ligit sounds like someone's got a Scampi...
My name is Les and I registered on this site to so someone can help me identify my 1970 Sea Craft. You have no pictures of it in your galleries and apparently since I am a new member I can't post a thread. So I am reaching out to you for help because I clicked on general and you were the first user I seen. I want to attach a picture right now but it is asking for a URL and this image is saved on my iphone. I took the tarp off the back of the boat. It has a bubble over the 120 horse engine and a mercruiser outdrive. My email is les788828@gmail.com |
I got it also & replied.

Quote from Les in Michigan " Greetings everyone! I'm Les and I always knew this boat was unique but never in a million years did I think it was this special. Back in 1997 my father bought this boat for my little brother and I. When it was purchased my father had the engine rebuilt. We put 10 hours on it since 1997. I hope you guys enjoy the pics! " |
so for sale? or you slapping a V6 in there ;)

A very special boat. Thanks for posting.
Les, if you haven't already seen it, here is a recent thread on a scampi rebuild: http://www.classicseacraft.com/commu...ad.php?t=25786 |
And then there were 4. I new there had to be some others stashed away some where. They are too unique looking for most people to just throw them away.
This revelation also adds a few more questions . If there were only 15 or so made, mine is numbered 814, and Les has 824, (Michaels is presumed to be a Potter built, because of the different number and structural differences as compared to mine) how did they actually number them. Or might there be more than what is thought to be? The one in Texas is #804 Michaels is #15011. JAMES |
& and this one is in nice condition too! Congrats!

Wow! Serious barn find!
Looks like its been in a garage for 40 years. Awesome specimen. Must see more of this in large day-lit fotos. Thanks for bringing it her to the party, Les. Similar color scheme to my MI-found 21... Guess theyre trying to hide them from google earth:eek: |
VERY COOL !!!!!!!!!!! I think the Seacraft group of folowers are as tight as any of the "clubs" for other collectables such as the vettes and airstreams...

Thanks
Hey guys,
Well I just want to say thanks for all the feedback. This is a great community of Sea Craft enthusiasts that have been nothing but good to me. Every year this boat gets washed and waxed and then sits. Then winter comes and it gets tarped up. So now that I know I have a wonderful piece of history I can assure you guys that the Scampi will live in the garage and the camaro can live its life outside in the Elements. My plans? Well if I have time and extra funds I would like to take her back out on the Detroit River this summer. She was last out there in 2005. She is in working order just needs a new prop, 2 new batteries and a good tune up. Whats to come? Well when the weather prevails here in Michigan, I will take more pictures for you guys during the brightest part of the day so you can see her gleaming beauty. FYI---Whoever owned this boat before us named it "Bushwhacker." The name is no longer there but you can see it ever so slightly. And finally the answer to the very question many of you have asked me. Is she for sale? Well to be honest I know what might father paid for this piece of history. To be completely honest I wouldn't know how much she truly is worth and what to ask for. I just found out what I have not even a week ago. Hopefully If I have the time I would like to get her back in the water and make a video of it and post it on youtube for everyone's viewing. Thank you again forum for your gracious words. Les |
Denny, you been holding out on us?? "Bushwhacker" is just too suspicious.

Welcome to CSC Les!!
You are now a member of this elite group of Nuts!! Hopefully you plan to keep this very unique rare boat, then one day pass on to your kids or family. She is in amazing shape just by the few pics you have posted.. Keep us posted on anything you do to her and keep the boat porn coming. (I like azz shots!:rolleyes::D) |
Les, Welcome to CSC! Where you will find addicts who can't have enough SeaCrafts, the enthusiast who tinkers all the time on their boat, and everyone really loves their SeaCrafts, regardless of year, size & model.
Your Dad was a very wise man... Your boat is in incredible condition and your TLC through the years is very evident. The numbering scheme for the Moesly Scampi boats began either at 800 or 801. It was originally believed there were only 12-15 built. However, your number of 824 is evidence that there were at least 24 built. So far found is 804, 814, 817, & 824. And then his successor to the company, Potter, also built a few and #15011 has been found and currently under extensive and incredibly beautiful restoration. The numbering for the 21' started at 50 or 51. I have #71. There have been several other 21's found numbering in the 100's. Enjoy your boat and if you have any questions, this forum is filled with experts to help you out. Cheers!!!! Carla |

Welcome aboard Les! If you haven't seen it, check out Carla's Moesly SeaCraft web site http://www.moeslyseacraft.com/15-scampi.html to learn more about her dad and some of the most innovative, efficient, best riding and best built deep-V hulls ever produced! You'll find this to be a very close nit group of great craftsmen, very much like the classic car and street rod folks, who can give you some good advice on getting that rare gem seaworthy again!

Awesome!! What's the scoop on the Camaro?

Your's is one Sea Craft "Sweet 15" though. I'm not sure if it would be appreciated as much on the Detroit River as it would be on the canals in Fort Lauderdale or around Peanut Island. You'd get some "thumbs up" there, Buddy. |
Welcome
Les,
You have an amazing piece of history there. I am in the process of doing a full restoration on the potter built scampi I found in Maine (now in Fort Lauderdale). You'll see that my boat has been modernized in may ways with classic colors, a new plexi bubble and hatch, duplicated original seats (from the scampi in fort myers), and something really special for the dash and steering wheel that will be installed this thursday. My boat was just a shell (no seats, motor hatch, motor, drive, plexi bubble, etc.) which is why I decided to go with more modern hardware. In your case I would leave everything original and if you plan to restore, the only thing I would do is find the original burnt orange color and have it repainted. Also, if you ever want to sell it (I wouldn't) please reach out to me - I know plenty of people who would buy it. -Mike |
Another little piece of seacraft history. Very cool and welcome!
