some new questions

ok digging in to look at what i have. i notice of the center stringers the left one is away from the transom about 20 inches, the right one tappers down to the transom like most i have seen on here . is this factory ? got the 150 stack 6 mercury running. so now i can take it off and clean the old plywood out of transom. my question to you master boat builders is ,can you slide plywood in and resin it in if you clean out the transom like seacast advices. 2nd ? i found a distributer for a product called arjay 6011 an y one use this. ican pick it up at fiberglass shop here in houston area for $162.00 for 5 gals no freight.7

also when reading differant rebuild threads it seems some have taken foam out from between the stringers and not replaced it. and some put it up in the gunnel.the reason i ask is because sea cast is suggesting i space the deck(floor) off the stringers. others here seem to say bond deck straight to stringers for max strength. thoughts

just could not get all wood out with 20 inch chain saw. so off came the inner wall. you can see how far the chain saw made it.the most rot was upon the sides where the plywood meet the hull.and just below engine. wood was put together with brads are thin nails. the pile of wet wood that couldnt reach weighed 50 lbs.and there is still 30 lbs are so left on back side. the dremal maxi tool is great for cutting the inner skin.

going again
been a while but things are falling in place so I can work on the boat again. had a son pass away and it shut me down for awhile. have decided to use marine plywood and epoxy resin instead of the pourables.i have a question .can anyone reading this tell me how to tell if the foam that is in the boat now is closed are open cell.i can tell the boat set in the water awhile and shows a water line close to the top of the motor about 19 inches.and it appears the floor was replaced along the way. but all the foam I have ckecked has no water in it.dont want to replace it if I don't need to.
|
Condolences on your son - that's really rough.
I'm pretty sure all the original foam is closed cell. When it gets wet the water seems to accumulate in the lowest part and not saturate the foam so much. With open cell its more like a sponge - it is all moist or wet. |
thanks. it was unexpected.ok its closed cell thanks

Heres some of the work i started on today.hammer and wide skinny cheisel to get remaining wood off transom .then a fit up just to ck angle on bracket .
|
Be cautious when you choose a power plant. If you put a four stroke back there on that bracket you will really effect the ride and performance. Even a two stroke 2 feet further aft than originally designed will have a noticeable effect. If it was me (and it was a year ago) I'd raise the transom up to about 26.5 inches and hang an engine directly on the transom or get a hermco or similar floatation bracket. Lookin good, good luck and keep the pics coming.

right now we are sticking the 150 hp tower of power merc i have on it .weighs about 300 lbs. moveing batterys under console and fuel tank under floor instead of in console .t top and console move forward also.i have read just about every thread on this and other sites so have a good idea which way i am going .have read strick and bushwacker threads also. we fish mainly oil rigs 10 to 15 miles off shore and need the closed transom.the gulf of mexico offshore near freeport an galveston tx. can change rapidly.thanks for the comments .always need to rethink everything

Wow I remember doing all that seems forever ago it looks like you got a handle on it. Good luck and have fun it's worth it

Its been a while, life got in the way,mom died ,6 brothers and sisters to settle will with and then had both knees replaced(should have done that a lot sooner). any way back on the seaCraft.got the transom in getting ready to tab it inside and bring stringers up to transom. All you guys posting while i was laid up had me chomping at the bit to get back at it.
|
transom
I would like to ask is there a reason why the stringers in 1971 20 ft sf taper down as they reach the transom.i have put two 3/4/ inch marine plywood in the transom and will be adding a bracket.Should i add knees to stringers and bring them higher on transom, are leave them as is?

more work done

Didnt get a response to knee question ,so went with my gut. got out the grinder Saturday morning and started going at inside of new transom skin to ruff it up. Same story ive read before .20 year old snap on grinder quit
working,so backup lowes grinder ,it quit .so off to tractor supply and got a new dewalt and that did the trick. Now have two layers of 1808 with 1708 sandwiched between.Put foam in place with a product called power grab for bathroom shower walls.3 layers of 1708 and 1808. after it sets real good (epoxy)i will grind all the ruff stuff down and add 2 layers of 8oz cloth with some white pigment to final coat .Next i will take out console and t top and start on floor and foam.BECAUSE OF HURRICANE HARVEY I WAS ABLE TO GET A 22 FOOT MAGIC TILT TRAILER FOR GOOD PRICE FROM SOMEONE WHO LOST THIER BOAT. |
Anyone remember the guy who took out his fuel tank with a chainsaw :eek:
|
His name was Lt. Dan, right?
|
My tanks
MY TANKS ARE IN MY CONSOLE. What did the guy do ,forget to plastic coat the chain!!.In the old days we used to run a vacumn cleaner hose from the tail pipe of a running car into the gas tank, then weld are cut out, the carbon monoxcide are whatever its called would replace the oxogen so it couldnt blow.
