So someone wanted my 76 18sf more than I did so I let her go down the road and make another family happy! Now I'm excited to jump on a 20SF and get her ship shape again!! This one doesn't need nearly as much work as my 18 did, but I'm still excited to see the results!! Planning on have paint and repairs done next week then going to start rigging! Going with awl grip fighting lady yellow hull sides and console, Kingston gray boot stripe, Brite white topside with Kingston gray non skid.... SHOULD SET HER OFF!!! Will keep everyone posted as I move along. Thanks!

Why do "tracker" seacrafts get a bad rap?

1 Attachment(s)
I just finished a 76 "potter" now starting my 86 "tracker" SC 20. From what I'm seeing, the trackers were made much better than the potters! Thicker glass, cleaner fit and finish, way more floatation, ZERO FLEX in hullsides where as my 76 had a TON of flex to it, better consoles, better more spacious rigging tubes, and way better job of sealing in wood on hatch lids..... So why the bad rap on trackers? Anyone??

You just finished that 18!!! They must have wanted her pretty bad. Good for you.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the 20.

This is a Potter based site, so I certainly would not indicate that there is any negative comparison to a Tracker built boat. I think there is a big "romance" factor, much like the Moesly built boats. Having rebuild all three, I have no preference, as I, and all others have stripped them down and made them their own.

At the end of the day, i think we all celebrate the terrific designs and efforts that Carl Moesly and Bill Potter that worked hard to bring these terrific boats to those of us that appreciate them. Tracker? - well, they built some decent boats too. I love my '89 23 CC almost as much as the '70 20 CC and '67 19 Bowrider. Just glad to be in the game.

congrats Justin ... Im riding on the next one though !

RE:

I totally agree.....Since the Potter came first I can see the love being for them. But my viewpoint on it is every year materials, resins, glass, etc, get better and lighter, and we learn what we thought was once good is now inferior. The hull design of the potters were way ahead of their time, but I honestly think tracker did some good things with the boats. Either way, both are good boats and are derived from the same design anyway. I bet the negative feedback is from someone who knows someone who knew someone....Not from real owners. Regardless I am excited to get this baby back on the water!! Thanks for your input

Boatman2506 11-20-2014 09:07 PM

No doubt rusty!!

When you gonna let me get my hands on your master angler?!!

FLexpat 11-20-2014 09:09 PM

It's the shape way more than the vintage. (hull AND care!)

Boatman2506 11-20-2014 09:13 PM

Good point flex

Yea I guess it all goes back to how well a boat was cared for regardless of age.

flyingfrizzle 11-21-2014 10:01 AM

Hard to compare the two. The 18 is such different construction the way the gunnels are made. Thats got a lot to do with the stiffness. You can look at 10 different potters and see construction differences between them even some the same year made. Tracker got its bad name from the late year model boats. Late 90's or 2000's. The 80's year model's were not bad boats at all. The ply wood vs the balsa core is a downgrade but there are other changes such as length but I would feel good about the 80's boats.

Boatman2506 11-21-2014 06:48 PM

Im still learning as I go. I have had numerous 2002-2004 SC's but now I am branching into the restores. Either way I love all the SC's and you just cant beat the beautiful lines!! Best looking boats on the water IMO!!

What about the bottom? What are you using there?-Are you going to close the transom?

Boatman2506 11-23-2014 06:05 PM

Bottom is in really good shape....Has two scratches I am having repaired but for the most part I am not touching it. Never been a fan of enclosing the transom. I think it makes the boat look goofy IMO. Hanging a Yamaha 150 two stroke on her!

Beaver 11-24-2014 10:20 AM

Good call on the 150 smoker. Fast, reliable, inexpensive. I like 'em.

You might want to add some screws to that leaning post if you don't want it to come out in the ruff water on a bad day. One screw in each corner is not enough to hold it down. Just make sure you install it them, then take the screws back out them add some resin with thickener (a syringe works well for getting it in the hole) then reinstall them. This will help keep the core from rotting. Also if you want the screws to come back out ez add some wax to the before putting them back in.

Also welcome to CSC, I see this is your first post. Is this your first SeaCraft hull?

18'ft seacraft

Yes this is my first post and yes my first seacraft bought it from boatman 2506 and I have since put all the screws in with 5200 silicone, thanks.

Splash well board

Is that aluminum you used for the splash well board?

76pb 12-16-2014 04:35 AM

18ft seacraft

yes its aluminum probably not the best choice but when it starts to corrode ill just cut out another one.
