suzuki power
Are any of you running a 250 or 300 hp Suzuki on your 23? If so, how do you like it? The good the bad and the ugly. My boat is a later model, 1998 and I'm thinking about repowering it. Thanks for any help.

Was my "go to" next motor mainly because of the chain driven camshafts as opposed to rubber belt. But now reading about multiple cases of ingested butterfly screws.

I just put a 250 on my 23 center console, I also have a Stainless marine bracket 29" setback. The motor is a beast! just got it propped out. I switched from a 250 Yamaha smoker and defiantly feel the weight difference in the back. its getting better than 40 knots with a medium load, haven't checked mileage yet. Overall so far im happy with it

Way to go Bill, you're trying to get me to spend money I don't have.!! I've been thinking very seriously about a 250 Zuki because of the crazy mileage they get. If I had the money I would put a 250 HO eTec on mine, however my money tree is dead!!!
Where did you buy yours???? |
It was on the back of a 24 Proline with a soft foor, lots of good parts (tabs, new steering system, windlas.) plus a trailer.
already sold the hard top off it. its a 2012 with 270 hrs on it. thinking i'll be in the motor for about 9 when I sell everything. Probably just trash or give away the hull. Sorry Bigtahuna not trying to steal the thread... |

I bought my DF250 (2004) used 5 years ago, runs flawlessly. Strong, quiet, and efficient.
I saw the thread on THT about the butterfly screws. I checked mine, and all we tight, no issue. And as a bonus here in Florida, I don't worry so much about my motor being stolen. Apparently the dirtbag thieves only want Yamahas:p |

Yes Sir Capt., they tell me you can leave the key in the ignition for Zukes, Mercs and eTecs in the Bahamas and they will still be there in the morning, however not a Yamaha!! There is a big market world wide for the Yamahas, someone will buy them in a minute if you have the balls to steal one.

I don't have a fuel flow gauge, but I did a test run on a portable tank and got 2.8nm/gal @ 4100rpm and 30knts. This was in calm water, light load.
I run 3500-3800 rpm while offsfore @ 24-26 knts, and while I do not have precise numbers, I trust that 2.8nm/gal. So I calculate at 2.5nm/gal for trips to be safe. So far I keep coming back with more fuel in the tank than I expected. Ken runs with a dive load, that will take more fuel. |
What props are you guys running?

I have the Suzuki 16X23 3 blade SS prop that came with the motor. I maybe could use to go down an inch or 2 pitch. Full load I get 5400 rpm, light can turn up to 6000rpm. But I'm so happy with the performance that I hate to screw with it.
|
I have the same prop for a spare that I had general knock down 2". If you want to give it a try I'll be glad to let you use it.
5400 is pretty low on the top end loaded. If you are seeing the tach surge in seas you are likely over propped. These motors like the higher rpm range and I was advised by my favorite tech that lugging these motors is not whats best for them. Speed on a empty boat is cool but holding tough in seas with a full load is what I prop for. The right prop for my set up is 16x20x3. |
If anyones interested Ive got a 3-16-20 for sale. perfect shape.

600 hours on my 250 with no problems.Best motor I ever owned

Well I pulled the trigger Saturday on a new 300AP. Looking forward to loading up for an offshore run with this thing pushing us. Anyone need a thirty inch 225 Optimax?
