Guys- new to Florida- have some disagreement about the id. of the attached fish photo- can you i.d. this snapper? Thanks

grey / mangrove snapper

AKA "Mangos" or "Gos" by the Crackers. (No Bones told me that as he is fluent in Cracker) At the West Coast Gatherings, we cut them in nuggets and Don V. cooks of 'em in peanut oil after we dust 'em in Italian Bread Crumbs or such. They chum up Seacrafters all the way from the Keys to Ocala.

You need to sharpen your blades as it is tearing the ends,
which leads to fungus and chinch bugs...:eek:

Be sure to use a good fertilizer in the spring and fall.. ;)
Oh yeah, St. Augustine is very thirsty...
Depending on where you live your watering days may be even or odd
only from 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM...:rolleyes:

According to the South Atlantic Marine Fisheries Commision that is a gray snapper regulated as a member the Snapper Grouper Complex. Closely related to the now almost extinct American Red Snapper. It's whats for dinner.

In case there is any confusion, I know that never happens, Mangrove and Gray are the same species. They are usually referred to as Mangrove in the juvenile stages when they still have more of a red color and the darker band from dorsal to eye.

Their color can also indicate the type of bottom or structure your on. Hard or dark colored bottom turns them a copper/red. They're hanging out in the sand when you catch a light color one. That big, light colored one with the dark band is the dominant one I would bet. Just something I noticed. Love them mangos'

so guys ... just to interject... it could also be a juvenile cubera.... you have to look at the tounge patch to verify.... ran across this dilemma up here were the 2 have taken up residence in the same places.... one has a arrow head the other a triangle if I remember correctly ...
