Antique Registration
Gents: I recall seeing some talk about this but couldn't find anything in my searches. What is the age requirement for a discounted Florida registration? I have 83 & 79 vessels. Thanks
here you go (note engine)
If I remember correctly it's only $6.25 per year, not bad! :)
Thanks bumpdraft, you just saved me quite a few $$$$.
Looking at the form, it indicates the same year engine as original. The statute dose not seem to be as clear. Also, if you get that discount, it appears that you can't also take $3.92 off for having locator beacon.
Has to have the same year and type motor it came with. No help for me.
I had no problem getting mine with a different engine, I just told them it was still powered by an outboard, which is the same type power it came with. Plus you get a cool "antique vessel" decal....it's the little things. :)
That is how I was trying to interpret it. But my long time friend, originally from Columbia, SC, now living nearby in Hudson, Fla, has everything he owns still registered in SC. To continue receiving my disability, I cannot make HB my primary residence. Oh well.
Oh, and Don, speaking of the little things, like roasted red peppers and Locatelli Pecorino Romano. Oh My!.! |
I looks like it should also work for my '79 sailboat. Still uses sail power, never had an internal combustion engine.
What I'm reading on the form, I agree with moose. The statute doesn't exactly say that and I don't know about anything on sailboats.
from Fl statutes; 2) ANTIQUE VESSEL REGISTRATION FEE.— (a) A vessel that is at least 30 years old, used only for recreational purposes, and powered by the vessel’s original-type power plant may be registered as an antique vessel. When applying for registration as an antique vessel, the owner of such a vessel shall submit certification, as prescribed by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles or from a marine surveyor that the vessel meets the requirements of this paragraph. (b) The registration number for an antique vessel shall be permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel as provided in ss. 328.48 and 328.54. (c) The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles may issue a decal identifying the vessel as an antique vessel. The decal shall be displayed as provided in ss. 328.48 and 328.54. I'm guessing it would depend on how the local tax office interprets it. |
Antique registration for Seacrafts and whaler
I did not have any issues other than telling them that it is still powered by outboards...it depends on the lady working the counter..the lady had to get a supervisor to override it for me...
I was just talking to a friend who has an 84 Mako 25'. He told me that he walked into the local tax/hsmv office and asked for the antique registration, because of its age. He didn't remember exactly what he paid, but he handed the lady a five dollar bill and got change back. I'll have to remember that for next year.
According to the tax collector here in Okaloosa County, Florida, the requirement for an original-type power-plant only refers to I/O or inboard vessels, and does not apply to vessels originally manufactured to use outboard motors, because outboards are not manufactured with a power-plant; Those are added later by the dealer.
In other words, if you converted from inboard or I/O to outboard, you're out of luck. If you converted from gas to diesel or vice versa, same thing. I paid a little less than $10 for two years of registration. |
Just did my '78 20SF today. $4.75 a year ! Thanks for the info...
Hey Gents, one more thing - on the FL form (87243) there's a place for a surveyors signature. Any way around this?
Seems like you ditch the form and let tax office handle it.
They didn't require a Marine surveyor signature, just the owners sig. They asked if it was original power and I said "yep, an outboard" 😉. Good to go....
Yeah - I love old school. $4.75. I'm looking for some old cars next. Thanks for all the feedback.

Ken remember a the county number, like 7 for Orange County, only followed by numbers was a small car, county number followed by single "W" was a regular size car like a Ford, a "WW" was a large car, a truck was G/K. For example a 7WW-12345 tag would be a Cadillac type/size car in Orange county. A 7G/K-12345 was a pickup. Weird.
We did not have too much money we only could afford cars as high as a single "W". NO way a Lincoln, Oldsmobile, or Caddy. |

Why can I remember stuff like that but can't find my truck keys? Hmmm, I'll check in the refrigerator! |

There wasn't a big population in Bunnell back then Ken and that's where my wife's people are from. I need to pm you. |
Terry you are just too old. I know the feeling, can remember things from decades back and can't think of what I had for dinner last night. lol

Being a native Floridian born in Clearwater in 1965, I believe the number of the county was based on the population at some point. I think "Q" was for antique cars. The rental and leased cars had a designation too "E" I think, although that was discontinued a while back due to criminals targeting tourists
So, what motor would have come on my 74? It didn't have twins and I was only 9 at the time and can only remember who was on the Skipper Chuck show.
I grew up in Ft. Pierce in St. Lucie County. Yes, I thought the county numbers on the license plates were originally by population. St. Lucie County was 24 and Vero Beach (Indian River County) was 32. Don't know how it is in Fla now, but then when you bought a used vehicle, the plate stayed with the car until the next year. I caught some flack, who the heck was this infiltrator from Vero, driving around the Ft. Pierce burger joints in a '61 Corvette, because it had 32 on the plate. BTW- I added a bumper hitch to tow the 14' Fabuglas.

I wonder if this boat survived to be an antique? Great place to launch.
