'69 Squid Lips

Picked this old gal up recently. (yes the name and colors will be redone exact :) No idea how this trailer made it 120 miles home but i shoulda bought a lotto ticket

She will be a knock around put up wet sandbar hopper, inlet/bridge fisher, booz cruz, tow to the islands boat. Simple and no frills, notched transom, small splashwell, flat deck with giant coffin/18'er console, natural livewell in deck behind console, and a built in freshwater tank in front of fuel tank. Power will be small block v6 ETEC...

Just a few questions so im not reinventing the wheel...

- fuel tank CoG? Will be doing something around 50 gal and 5ft long or so. Instincts say dead center of boats CoG..

-Deck raise height? (only thinking about raising stringers 1.5", deck will be 1" honeycomb.) Dont think i need much according to this old waterline...

Notch height? Read 26 somewhere. She will be pretty light!

Transom was already done in coosa and epoxy(lots of it). Not pretty but its solid so...
Gonna reinforce the stringers in their current form, and run a keel stiffener/drain first off before the real fun begins...

Minor Sunday setback, called transom. As soon as i saw this boat i knew her ass looked a lil flat. I attributed it to an optical illusion form the globs of glue hanging off the back. Cleaned that up and looked even flatter, so made a pattern real quick and checked against my friends 20, not even close haha

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/738/32...e55d5bc548.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr

Im thinking the kid i bought her from had the keel blocked up and no cap on when he did this... Gna take some numbers off my friends 20 and get her back into form.

I could tell the kid used alot of material, but nothing like this...

Ive never seen so much cobbled together s..t in my life! Its like he ran 1/4" of epoxy between every layer of glass he did. Bright side is her ass will be probably 75# lighter, and i can add a lil crown to the transom like all the ones i do.

Got smart and tried a chisel. Coulda popped the whole thing off in one piece if it wasnt for the 2" lip of original outside skin on the hullsides. It appears a grinder was not present for prep class that day

Pisser this core weighs so much and has a bow locked in. 4 layers of very oversaturated 1708 on each side...

Back to where we started (with the right shape!)... All the help i can get these days are some logs (helped pull the hull back into shape)

nice stuff ,great job on it.keep it posted

dirtwheelsfl 03-29-2017 09:48 PM

Nice base to work off now! Stringers got a 24oz biax and the rest of the hull up to a few inches above chine got a 17oz. Overlaps where stringers meet the hull and an extra strip down the keel. Stringer cutouts got an extra layer too after foaming...

I'm thinking this is gonna be a VERY nice build...

FAS 03-30-2017 06:46 AM

is the transom all PVC, between the inner and outer? half inch?interesting

dirtwheelsfl 03-30-2017 09:54 PM

nice n quick hopefully!

Yes pvc board is the generic i call it... Corelite, Celtec, theres a few different "companies". My supplier only had 1/2", didnt wanna wait on 3/4. Its a 20# density i believe. 4 layers of 17oz on each side. Last inside layer incorporates 12" tabs and then 3 more 17oz tabs over that. Outer skin will get a 5th that wraps the hullsides and bottom a few inches...

Stringer raising time now!

dirtwheelsfl 04-30-2017 09:15 PM

Stringers done in corecell and divinycell cutoffs. 2" raise, planed down the outboard ones a bit for some crown... Bulkhead time now!

Picking away... Coosa bulkheads. Fore to aft... integral freshwater tank +/-16 gal, 55 gal fuel tank, natural free-flowing livewell about 30 gal, and monster bilge.

Looks like some pretty great progress.

NoBones 07-21-2017 01:38 PM

You may want to consider electrical sweeps instead of the elbow 90's !

Unless you are using all fly by wire controls etc..

Just my 2¢ worth !

Nice job you are doing for sure...

Blue_Heron 07-21-2017 08:32 PM

I just came across this thread. Looks like nice clean glass work and a quality build.

dirtwheelsfl 07-22-2017 08:39 PM

Thanks guys.

Pic kinda makes the elbows look squatty, theyre streets. My homie depot doesnt carry 3" gray stuff for whatever reason? Shouldnt phase teleflex extremes... not a fan of the tactile-ness ( or lack of) on the electronic stuff just yet

Console is just a jig for the one i will build. Pretty close to the 18'er console but with a few tweaks. Mainly a bigger flat between helm panel and electronics face to fit beers! And an extension on the sides with a flat for rod holders, fuel/water fills, and a place to put feet when stting on leaning post

Looking great! You do very nice work.

I love the clamps!

Lloyd

Bushwacker 08-25-2017 04:23 PM

Very nice glass work!

FYI - cutting out the inner liner between gunnel and floor removes a LOT of torsional stiffness from Moesly's original design! If you installed some 1/2 balsa core on the hull sides, that would significantly stiffen the hull without much of a weight increase!

dirtwheelsfl 08-27-2017 03:28 PM

Still not sure what im gonna do there just yet... The side boxes will be replicated up forward, along with an anchor area bulkhead. Will probably bag some 1/4" foam to the hullsides aft of the boxes. I like a nice flat hullside with no knees or stiffeners

Thats a couple of light years past any workboat I've been on and well past plain old classy.
I would love a little info on exactly how you did that.
Please.

Lots of hand blocking before the cap went back on. Along with various power tools to get it close enough to block. Tabbing placement can save alot of headache too. L&H handled the priming and painting after i faired it.

Friend/client of mines boat, im definitely not going to put in the same time on mine. I dont think sealife and women care haha Ride em hard n put em up wet!

dirtwheelsfl 09-02-2017 03:14 PM

Tank saga: Etched, converted and coated. Now im not one to badmouth people, but stay clear of "Best American Welding" in Vero Beach. Ended up having an old friend of mine do it. Havent seen him in years and didnt know he was in the welding biz, but he does excellent work. In Stuart if anyone needs a tank done. Also you can see how off center the stringers were from the factory on the mounting tabs on the tank. Lots of Tefgel and nylon washers there

I don't think this one will need to be redone in a long time. Boats will probably have wings by time it needs that.

Boat is looking awsome. Love the forward boxes. I’m amazed at your ability to crank these builds out.
