Hermco splashwell mold

1 Attachment(s)
As many of you know, I was able, with assistance of another member, to acquire Don’s original mold about a year and a half ago. I have assisted in building nine Jersey Speed Skiffs from a mold that was 75% the condition of this mold. It is as new. When I offered to pop one for another member, my two sources estimated $500. When able to speak with Don, he laughed, and said he did it as a favor with fiberglass scraps and usually for about $200! It is now stored in climate control, but will lose that spot come spring. I’m wondering which member would most benefit from this and be willing to produce a few more if requested. What do you all think? Going to attach a photo of the mold, and a photo of finished product.

Thanks in advance.

Vezo

Vezo, Part II 10-18-2018 01:02 PM

Well the final product from this mold was sent to me by another member, hopefully he will post. Cannot seem to locate.

JUST JOHN 10-18-2018 01:40 PM

Capt Terry informed me that this is what I have in my Seafari. Good stuff!

Vezo, Part II 10-18-2018 02:10 PM

Really Good Stuff. Could you possibly post a pic of the improvement? Thanks.

Michael.

Nice boat! That light blue is very pretty! I would go with a lighter blue like that if mine were ever to get painted (or light grey).

Mine's pretty much covered for the season (NY), but found some on my phone, old and new...

Thank you strick!

I always thought that splash well was factory... I guess dealer installed?
The back has a blue indoor/outdoor carpeting affixed that I believe the previous owner put there 40 years ago. You can kinda see it in the pics. I always thought it could be improved aesthetically, but short of smooth gelcoat on the back side, I'm not sure how else I'd want it...

SailorChlud 10-19-2018 12:05 PM

My boat feels naked without the splashwell!

Nice! I am green with envy over your splashwell. I have the 1972 version of your boat, in white, but no splashwell. I had my transom raised to 25 inches. What height is yours?

JUST JOHN 10-19-2018 03:10 PM

Hey Sailor, My transom/height is original... I'd have to measure. I'm ignorant on what the stock height for my '77 is... When the stern is into the wind it sure takes water over the transom... makes me thankful to have that splashwell!

Capt Terry 10-20-2018 02:01 PM

Splashwell on 20' Seafari

As the original owner, I purchased a splash well for my '76 Seafari from Potter when he had Seamark, after SeaCraft, probably in early 80s. Like Just John it had gold, outdoor carpet on the non-gelcoat, rough roving side (probably ordered that color). I used it lots of years after the carpet gave up the ghost with my wife complaining about the appearance. Finally about a year ago I primed and painted the rough side white with the splashwell still in place. Looks good- should have listened to the wise wife sooner!

BTW- my transom is 20"

I have no ready pics of the paint job to send. Here is one showing the teak I added which is a nice touch and an occasional seat (at rest).

Spashwell thx

Hey Vezo
You are welcome. Annoys me when the younger generation says No Problem. If the server brings me a fork that wasn't at my place on the table, I don't want to hear NP to my thank you. It shouldn't be a problem that was the server's job! The wise wife says let it go!

JUST JOHN 10-22-2018 08:46 AM

The first time I saw Capt. Terry's teak splashwell "shelf", my jaw hit the floor with envy. It really is pretty, and ties in so well w/ his teak gunnel covers and lower teak gunnel shelf trim. The extra seating or cocktail table would be a major plus too!!

Related to the splashwell. When my motor is up at the top of it's trim, it will hit the back corner of the splashwell on the starboard side, if flopped that way. It only happens on that side so either the motor isn't perfectly centered, or the hemco splashwell is offset, or slightly misaligned upon installation. Sometimes at anchor I purposely turn motor to the other side so it doesn't rest against the splashwell at anchor. I wonder if the "clutch" in my new NFB steering will prevent this?

...Anyway, it's never really a problem, besides a scar on the motor covers and a slight rash on the hemco unit where it makes contact. This year however, when prepping the boat at the ramp, the motor had flopped to that side while trailering. My girl wasn't aware of the "issue" and used the rear trim up/down in an instant to move the motor lock and "cruuuuuncccchhh!" a little more edge-rashed / flattened on that radius. A disheartening moment, but no significant damage.

Hermco Splashwell

Just John-
I think the only time I had any problems with interference between the engine and my teak portion of the splashwell was with a Merc tower-of-power, I thought I had sufficient clearance with the engine tilted all the way up; but did not allow for motion when I hit a bad pothole. Duct tape held my engine cover together for that weekend camping outing! You may be able to reduce the amount the engine tilts if you have enough road clearance. During towing I usually bungee the steering wheel to the driver's footrest, so the engine is vertical, thereby reducing the tendency for the engine to flop over.

JBASS02 10-22-2018 11:53 AM

The bass fishing guys use these

https://www.amazon.com/Panther-55-21.../dp/B00CKFUJFY

to keep there oversize outboards straight while trailing. You can also make them out of PVC.

Here is where mine makes contact. See the slightly-flattened corner radius? My motor does not contact at the front, or the port side.

Thanks for that, I'll look into them.

Splashwell interference

John
You could take a sander or dremel tool and remove a little material from the splashwell. Not too much because you don’t want to crack out of the corner. However, if you do that your engine may simply rotate further and still hit it. Try to find a u-shaped cushioning material to wrap around the corner and if the engine touches it- so what. It might not work too well to wrap it completely around the splashwell due to outside corners and then inside corners. However if you duplicated my teak trim, you could end it at the aft face of the teak with only one bend in it. Maybe use ome adhesive with temporary masking tape.

Nice work!
I built one with rod holders as a rocket launcher years ago prior to the transom redo. It worked very well and made bait rigging and line deployment a snap.

Capt Terry 10-23-2018 07:54 PM

Thx Chuck. I built the original maybe 32 years ago. This is either the second or a mod of the original. Flat line rod holders would have been a good idea. Don’t fish anymore. Jusr set the wakeboard on it to squirt slippery atuff into the bindings.

Vezo, Part II 10-23-2018 08:12 PM

Interesting read. Now that’s pretty damn funny.

So who would be best suited to possess/retain/store and possibly build one for a profit? I can’t. Buehler?

Is the mold in SC or FL?

Vezo, Part II 10-24-2018 08:27 AM

It is currently in SC BigS.

Splashwell Mold

Sorry Michael, I can't resist this-
I applaud you for saving the Hermco splashwell mold from destruction. But your effort to figure out what to do with it reminds me of an old story or cartoon. This little dog had been unsuccessfully chasing a VW done the road every morning. One day the dog caught up to the VW and latched onto the rear bumper with his jaws. The next caption was something like "What the hell do I do with it now?!"
Good luck on finding someone to put the mold to good use. I bought my splashwell for the obvious reason of keeping the sea out of the boat, more security for stern seat guests, and it kept my little ones out of the grease that dripped off the tilt tube!

I can easily bring it to Fla by April. I’m headed to NJ for Christmas

Michael.

Rybones 10-25-2018 11:32 PM

When the first Vezo put up the first pic of the mold I was looking at it and couldn't figure it out thinking "what the hell is that". Now I see the pics of the product and I'm thinking "Oh, duh". It looks great trimmed with the wood.

Friz has not shown any interest as of yet. If someone has the supplies to pop one, UncleBoo has a buddy who would have paid $200 awhile back for any shade of white gel coat.

I’m suddenly making a trip Tuesday to Spotsylvania, Va.. Staying until Sunday am, then headed to Rocky Mount, NC. For a week of deer hunting. Open to make a run to Fla., 11-12 until Thanksgiving, when I have to be back in SC. Then around 12-15, headed to NJ for holidays. No plans to visit the Cape. And freaking Gag Grouper closes 12-31.

Capt. Terry, I thought someone on the board would be happy to have this. Haha
I can store it until April.

Vezo, Part II

uncleboo 10-26-2018 12:39 PM

Bring it with you and get up with me when you get to Rocky Mount. I'll come pick it up. We have 4 boat builders here and I have lots of friends that work at them. My cousins son is the CEO at Albemarle Boats. I give my word the mold will stay in the SeaCraft fold. I'll make one and determine the cost. We'll go from there.
Boo!

If you read the last posts on my thread you would find that my motor is toast and I don't have the resources to replace it right now! Otherwise an invitation would be in the mix for sure! Unfortunately, for now I can only issue an IOU.

Vezo, Part II 10-26-2018 04:29 PM

Let me check with Big Shrimpin to make sure he does not want to meet me in NJ in December. He showed interest first, fair enough?

Michael- to whom are you addressing your question and what do you want to see?

Vezo, Part II 10-26-2018 09:50 PM

I was simply hoping a member, such as yourself, may post a pic of what this mold produces. Thanks.

Michael - I just did not want to see that mold end up in a dumpster. Let uncleboo take it. It sounds like he has some good connections.

Splashwell Pics

Michael-
The pics are pretty self explanatory. I attached the splashwell with SST sheet metal screws. Note the quick release latches holding the teak in place.

Thanks Capt., exactly what I was looking for.
BigS, that’s the kind of interest I kind of expected. Oh Well...
UncleBoo, I arrive camp 12 noon Sunday, Nov. 4. That would be best day for exchange. We hunt hard Mon. Thru Sat. twice a day. Sunday it’s a ghost town by daybreak. How does that work for you? Easy to find with GPS in Rocky Mount.

Michael.
