JFK, JR Special

Did anyone on here watch the JFK, Jr. Special, recently and notice that there was one picture that had him at the helm in a small console? The registration was MA or M? and 109 PT. Looked like a 20' center console Seacraft. And the registration was certainly special PT 109! If you missed it, I will try to post a picture from my cell where I paused the TV long enough to get it and post it here if I can figure out how to do it!

Dana at Millway marine in Barnstable probably sold that boat.
Yes, he ran a 20 all around Hyannisport.

Thanks for posting! I couldn't get my picture to go!

John Kerry had a 23 for many years too, but I like the picture above better :)

classictwenty 01-06-2019 10:31 PM

The console, etc. looks like my 74', so does anyone what year JFK, Jr's is?

Looking at the console rail and console, I'd say it's either 73 or 74.

That picture has been floating around here for a while.

here's a reference to John Kerry's 23.
http://www.nbcnews.com/id/5130922/ns.../#.XDLBs_xOnBI

The Boston Globe has reported that Kerry has "had powerboats since he was a teenager." The Boston Herald reported in 1996 on Kerry’s "a 200-horsepower SeaCraft powerboat valued at $20,000." And the Associated Press ran this paragraph in April: "Records of John Kerry's Vietnam War service released Wednesday show a highly praised naval officer with an Ivy League education who spoke fluent French and had raced sailboats — the fruits of a privileged upbringing that set him apart from the typical seaman."

What console?

I remember hearing somewhere the late President Bush had a 23 before he ended up with a 28 Cigarette, then a 31 Fountain and then a 38 Fountain. Big time striper guy and also fished with a local charter out of Steinhatchee once or twice a year. I remember a day I was up there and a big CG cutter with a fleet of ribs was keeping folks at least 3 nautical away.

classictwenty 01-07-2019 05:54 PM

Late President Bush fished here locally out of Virginia Beach, too. The news reported that he caught some tunas that day!

I saw JFK, Jr.'s 20' SF many times in Lewis Bay (Hyannis). Met him several times (and his uncle, usually at Baxter's). The 1978 23' Sceptre I have was originally ordered by JFK Jr.'s mother, Jacqueline, but was delivered to the dealer, Millway Marine (where we had our SeaCraft serviced), with the wrong color upholstery; bright yellow vs. white, it was ugly as hell and Mrs. Onassis refused delivery. my father was looking to upgrade our 1973 20' SF to a 23' Sceptre, asked John Cannady at Millway to swap the upholestery, and he ended up buying the boat (believe he still has the original bill of sale changing her name to his). I still have the boat and it is very much a member or my family; wrapping-up some work done by Metan Marine and a repower before it (hopefully) makes it back into the water this coming season.

Quick story on President GW Bush. I was in the Keys on an April "Earth Day" back when George was a regular visitor to Islamorada. He stayed at the "Tarpon Flat" condos and fished at least every day. One evening while working on a few Happy Hour brews at the Lorelei Bar the Secret Service showed up and told us the President was coming and if we wanted to leave now was the time because we had to stay "no matter what" when he got there and stay until he left. Well hell!!! I'm staying, good God it's the President!! Anyway he was very nice and came by and said hello to almost everyone even had a brew or two. Good experience!!

Next morning me and my buddy are out on the west end of Peterson Banks just north of the intercoastal looking for bonefish and here comes the "flotilla"!! The first three boats were flats skiffs, which the President was going to fish from, then about 10 - 15 minutes later Bush and Curt Gowdy come by in a 32' Scaarab type boat waving at us and then about ten Coast Guard and Marine Patrol boats of all shapes and sizes following with Secret Service guys everywhere. I was thinking that's the way to go fishing, send out the guides to look for fish and go with the one who's on them!!

It was a pretty cool weekend!!!

The only SC I remember seeing them with was the 20' SF. Mrs. Onassis supposedly was purchasing the 23' Sceptre for the same reasons my father was; don't know if they bought another after that.

Chris - what type of motor are you repowering with? The old 454 wore out?

Water Rat 01-08-2019 03:35 PM

Ed, I am sticking with the exact same drive train; a Mark IV 454, carburetor (getting difficult to find these) coupled to a Bravo 1 drive. After looking inside the old block, found it was not too bad but had 2000+ hours so did a preemptive replacement. Still some way to go before ready for the water.

Don’t know about Massachusetts, but in Fla and SC mine was two letters followed by four numbers then two more letters. So MS 109 PT was probably custom or they did as they pleased and nobody objected to the Kennedys.

Pretty sure the Kennedys could get just about anything they wanted.

Your Sceptre is the nicest I've ever been on.
I remember sitting on the back talking with you (that's me on the engine cover) after your rough water ride up to the Jazz Fest in 05......

It used to be fairly easy to get unique boat registration numbers in Massachusetts. My first boat, I was able to get MS 21 EM. 21 is my birthday and EM is my initials.

Not sure about now...been about 6 years since I had a boat registered in Mass...

Hey Chuck,
Very nice to hear from you and I remember that day well; used my large friend as movable ballast on that run. Thank you for the kind words, means a lot coming from you and the SC's you have been on - hope not to upset KMoose or any other members that have invested blood, sweat & tears in theirs ;-)

DoozleD 01-09-2019 09:17 PM

i know 4 a fact that that 20 is still on cape..i put a 175 on it

classictwenty 01-10-2019 04:48 PM

DoozleD, I just repowered my 1974, 20' SC with a 4 stroke 115 Yamaha and I am concerned about the weight. It weighs considerably more than my 115 2 stroke Johnson or guessing about 60 lbs heavier. Assuming your 175 was a 2 stroke, was weight an issue? They should be comparable. When I have about 3 adults or about 450 lbs hanging around the console, water is only a few inches below the engine well. Did you have to do anything like adding weight in the bow? I am going to try a 13.2 gal water bladder or about 105 lbs in the dry storage compartment. Any info would be appreciated?

DoozleD 01-11-2019 08:47 AM

The 175 (evinrude e-tec) was on a costumes boat. If i remember he redid the transom to 25in? I never ran the boat. My 20 had a 115 yamaha fore
stroke on it when i bought it. I still have a 20 inch transom. I went to the 115 evinrude for the weight savings I think there was a 80lb diff? The two stroke has WAY more torque than the yamaha!

classictwenty 01-11-2019 01:17 PM

Thanks

ScottM 01-13-2019 10:53 AM

Mass. still allows you to pick your registration #s as long as they're not already taken.

That Jazz Fest raft-up was a great time indeed.
