Anyone running a Honda B250 on a 23?

I’m looking to repower and can’t find a whole lot with the Honda 250 performance on the 23. Plenty on the 225. I was sold on a suzuki 300 but can get a great price on a new Honda with a good service center. It looks like they updated them a few years ago as well. I know people say they are heavy but still super close to weight on the suzuki. I’d pick the suzuki hands down for the extra ponies but saving 3-4K has me thinking. I’m moving from twin 150 Optimax so weight isn’t going to be a major concern either. Just curious on experience and performance from folks? Thanks!

I've got a 2017 ToHondasu 250 on my 23'er, just turned 200 hours. Always in the 3.2 to 3.5 mpg range, however I'm a 4000 to 3800 guy! Been very happy with mine. I bought mine because of a <$3500 difference with the Zuke, however it's not "apples to apples", I don't have fly by wire and digital gauges, but I really do have digital with my NMEA 2000 to my Raymarine.

Great numbers! What’s your cruise and wot speed look like?

DonV 06-25-2020 09:16 PM

The boat likes 3800 rpm which is 28 mph, bump it up to 4000 and it squares to 30. This is with a 17" large diameter, large blade area prop. For WOT I just missed 50 mph on the GPS, only got 49 mph on the factory provided Honda 19" prop. Only did it once or twice when pretty new, I don't really care about WOT numbers. As a performance number, last year's trip to the Bahamas was a total of 319 miles in four days and I burned 96.5 gallons of gas, FULLY loaded. Not sure I ever went over 4200 rpm the whole weekend. Happy shopping.

I’d prefer efficiency over top end and those numbers are solid! That’s more than respectable for wot too! It’s really hard to turn down the Honda after hearing this! Thanks for the info.

my friend has one on his boat, he calls it the most boring motor ever! He loves it, no problems with it!

You don't see many help me with my Honda threads.

For those with the Honda 250 or Tohatsu. What mounting hole are you in? Also, what prop and RPM are you seeing. Thanks

I have twin Honda BF250 IST motors on my 27 Tournament. First pair I was turning 6350 rpm’s with Solas Lexor 17 pitch props at 51mph. This pair I decided to mount engines one hole lower and I am turning 6100 rpm’s with Powertech 4 blade 18 pitch props at 51mph (I gained one mph after about 40 hours). Totally different ride with the four blades as I now have a mid range.

See post #4 above, was extremely happy with 3.2 on that trip. Since then have moved it to the bottom hole and the engine is as high as it will go, seems to run a little better and the mileage is a little better. Light load, half a tank and 3800 I see 3.5 to 3.7 mpg, on perfectly calm days just under 4.0.

Oh yeah, the only problem I've ever had with the Tohatsu is the O2 sensors get dirty and kills performance. It's very easy to tell when the O2 sensor is messed up, the engine will not stay at a steady RPM. Will vary 300 to 400 rpms on plane and just does not seem to have normal power. I always have a spare, normally a Walker unit versus a genuine Honda, and it's a three minute replacement...in or out of the water. Mine is a 2017.

Don V very helpful! You mentioned 17" prop, i'm assuming that is a three blade stainless prop is that correct? Honda or another prop? And is it stainless? TY

DonV 11-14-2021 12:36 PM

Yes it's a 17" pitch and it's the largest diameter available and it has a large blade area, it's a Turning Point brand. I think this is the one in the link below I bought with the Honda hub from WM when they had them on sale (of course). More in to steady performance when the boat is loaded and fuel mileage. Not worried about WOT speed. It was actually the one Josh Stoner used in his first 23'er with a 250 Tohatsu and it was his recommendation that I tried it on my SC. Much better than either the 17 or 19 Honda props. Good luck.

What year 23’? 30” shaft length? And do you ever experience blow outs with the engine mounted in the highest position when light load or in rough seas? Thanks again, this type of insight will help me accelerate dialing in. TY!

1978, 25", no. Wish I had made my transom 30" when I redid it.
