23 sCCeptre

Next on the chopping block...

The actual hull shell is in really nice shape minus the transom skin. As you can see there was some stringer issues... Will get a new grid with as little wasted space as we can, a bracket, a CC, and a curvy one-off cap.

1978 hull, nice n thick, liner as u see it weighed 300# alone. The hull is laid up nicely, stringers not so much...

Pumped to see you work magic on a 23. What's your idea for the cap/shear?

Shear will stay the same, its perfect as is! Cap will have a big radiused coaming in the bow and will be wide enough to walk the length of the boat. In the stern it will either overhang the new rear bulkhead or the bullhead will have a toekick, not sure yet...

kmoose 01-11-2021 04:33 PM

Where is the 25? I thought that was next.

Thats my spare time no rush project, itll get cut on soon enough though! This 23 isnt mine...

captsuperfly 01-11-2021 07:26 PM

wow, you weren't kidding about the delam on those stringers. At least you save time chipping putty off them?

uncleboo 01-12-2021 10:41 AM

I'm digging your play on the boat names, sternrider, sCCeptre...

Boonie23 01-24-2021 11:40 AM

Are you building the cap yourself? I'm also converting a sceptre to cc and going to need a cap as well. Looking good!

strick 01-26-2021 11:23 AM

Have not seen stringers come apart like that before that I can remember..

Yep...

Yes pretty traumatic Strick! Theres just 1 layer of 24oz? tabbing on either side of them.

Capt Chuck 01-27-2021 12:04 PM

Years ago I saw a Sceptre that had fallen off a dry storage rack then sat for years with the cockpit full of water. The dark color & cracked stringer glass roving under the deck got me thinking? I doubt some previous owner ran the shit out of it in rough seas enuff to delaminate them.
You know any history of this hull?

I dont see any damage on the outside that would make me think thats the case. Just some stress cracking on the steps and some fwd keel rash... I dont like the box stringers anyway, i think theyre a waste of space! Theyre not delaminated really, the tabbing just gave. Looks like a single layer of 24oz roving slapped in there...

We got it from the manager of Merritt Supply and it sat behind their warehouse a long time. Bottom looks like it was painted royal blue with hullside paint, then a lighter blue antifouling on top.

KNZ911 02-01-2021 09:50 AM

It's been a while for me on here but I'm still plugging away at my 23. My stringers were delaminated exactly like that. That why I decided to redesign them into a grid. Also, more in-deck storage. Can't wait to see yours come together.

Yep these are gonna come up about 5” and every inch will be used for something! Gonna take some imagineering to cram 150gal of fuel, a big killbox and a stepdown console in but its all together in my head

Transom is in it now, had to beef up some delam between main hull layup and transom core bedding layup before core went in.

kmoose 02-11-2021 08:37 AM

I know everybody seems to be reluctant to transom R&R from the outside but I think you get a much better result. Trying to save a 40+ year old outer skin with 50 patched holes in it is not a great foundation to start with IMHO.

This was kind of an in and out i guess? Saved having to wrap the outside of the boat! Plus it kept everything basically in shape. I like to put an inch or 2 of an outward curve in too, easier to fair...

DonV 02-11-2021 11:26 AM

I remember when they cut out the transom with a sawsall, outer glass, wet wood and inner glass of my brother's original I/O it took four people to carry it to the dumpster!!! I could not believe how heavy it was!!!! After seeing how the new solid coosa transom was built for a bracket.......it will never fail.

I just pulled about 500# of wet foam and stringers outta this one. Beefed up the lams a bit on this one knowing it will get a bracket. Big knees and livewell will all be glassed in too

What do you guys do about the HIN when you do the transom from the outside? Owner before me did mine from the outside but left the top right corner of the outer skin to save the HIN. Can I cut it off and have someone restamp the transom? My first build so thanks in advance.
